While TiVO & DirecTV relationship 'thaws'

TiVO service via Comcast has been a long time coming, considering the deal was originally announced back in 2005. Comcast certified the platform for deployment to customers last June, though no deployment date was specified by either company.

In August, Comcast announced that they would fund deployment of TiVO software on both Motorola and Scientific Atlanta boxes (the latter making up around 25% of Comcast's userbase). At the same time, the company said a New England launch would happen "shortly."

We're now approaching the halfway mark in October, and TiVO says Comcast deployment is imminent. Really. "We're waiting for word any time now that the first non-Comcast employee will begin to get the service," said TiVo Chief Executive Tom Rogers this week.

At the same time, TiVO says their relationship with DirecTV has "thawed," and new updates to user "DirecTiVOs" should be coming soon. Of course, many DirecTV users (this author included) are essentially being forced to upgrade to DirecTV's HR20 DVR if they want to get the company's new MPEG-4 based HD and broadband VOD content.

Finally

I'm a new Comcast subscribers and they wanted me to put a ~$150 deposit on a DVR box. From all the horror stories I've been told about their current boxes, I decided to wait.

But if they have a Tivo unit coming out, I will gladly drop that kind of dough.

Re: Finally

From what I can tell Comcast will just be leasing them, much like most of their other equipment.

Rent.

It's a download to the existing line of Motorola DVR's (and in the future SA & Panasonic DVRs).

You'll have your standard DVR service (around 11.95 a month) and then you can opt in for deluxe DVR service (possible $3-7 more than the standard DVR service). They will add the code to the billing system and you will get the new Tivo firmware downloaded to your DVR.

I hope they don't get too greedy with the pricing. For $3/month I'm probably in but an extra $7 is too much. $19/month total for an aging 120GB DVR, regardless of the software, is not a good value.

comcastuser2734

comcast does not let you buy current digital boxes in any form, will not be likely that you would be able to by the comcast tivo box that will be offered.

$150.00 was most likey due to your credit history not because it was a dvr box.

Re: Finally

Actually it was because I was a new customer. They said had I a history of 6 months or greater with Comcast service I would get it without a deposit.

They will not be providing TIVO's, thats the thing. They will be providing their standard Motorola and SA boxes with TIVO software. This software should clearly be better than what they currently have installed, but the DVR's may not be as good as a pure TIVO device. There are other factors to keep in mind here, capacity, processor speed, etc. Just an FYI.....

Re: Finally

And I'm in different in that respect. The software platforms are what get the yays and nays. I loved using my DirecTivo because it was intuitive and easy to use. That, and I was able to hack the piss out of the OS for tons of functionality.

But when I try to use DVR's like Comcasts Motorola with their own software, it's frustrating to no end.

$150 deposit? No shit.

That sucks. They hit me for no such fee when I got my DVR box.

My Motorola Comcast box is a wonderland of jittery HD feeds that remind me of a YouTube streaming video with buffering issues.

I was watching the Phils beat Washington 2 Sunday's ago in HD, and every time there was some "action" in the game, it lost a few frames, and then picked up.

It was INFINITELY OBNOXIOUS. I was so pissed I wanted to head to the local Comcast office with a hammer and smash something .

Instead, I had a nice spot of scotch and put my feet up. I'll be able to drop Comcast soon enough for Fios TV, so sooner than later I'll be voting with my all mighty dollar.

Wanna screw a cable, TV, or ISP provider? Take your cash elsewhere, it's all they really care about...

Come on TiVo....

Really Comcast...enough already.

I am quite interested to see this working. My HD Moto DVR is ready and waiting for the code.

Honestly I am looking to see this so I can figure out if an actual TiVo HD is in my future or if the Comcast box will suffice, at least on one TV. Honestly I would also consider an HD TiVo for my study with CableCards too.

memo

Memo to DirecTV:

I'm not giving up my DirecTivo. You won't be getting me to subscribe to HD unless you put out an Mpeg4 Tivo. The day that comes out I'll upgrade. Until then you're missing out on revenue.

It will be an extra cost OPTION. If you don't want the Tivo software you won't have to get it.

Are you afraid of the horseless carriages as well? There's no reason (other than cost) not to upgrade to the TiVo software over the abomination offered by Motorola or SA.

SA DVR is crap

I've had two Comacast SA DVRs, and they both experience random audio dropouts. Funny thing is that sometimes the dropouts aren't on the original recording, but then I'll pause and resume, then dropouts start appearing. Rewind, then replay and the dropouts exist in the same spot. Its like the DVR screws up its own recording. Maybe the Tivo software would be better?

Same problem with Cox SA boxes. Thought it was the hard drive it still happens after replacing the drive.

replace the old software, dont make it a $$$$ option!

this is lame. switch over to tivo if that is what you want to provide, comcast, but please dont charge me extra to have DVR software that actually works, unlike the extra-crappy software currently on my motorola box

Re: replace the old software, dont make it a $$$$ option!

Maybe you should ask Tivo to give it to Comcast for free instead. If Comcast only charges a few dollars more for this, I'd be surprised if they're making much more. Of course they're already making it on the 1st DVR charge, now they just won't have to keep improving it, since it will now be the "cheap" option.

Re: replace the old software, dont make it a $$$$ option!

i dont feel i need to ask tivo to give it to comcast free. companies change suppliers all the time, but i dont think we should pay more for the "new and improved version" since the reason they have to change suppliers is that the old software is a complete piece of carp

Re: replace the old software, dont make it a $$$$ option!

Well, that's your opinion. I think, for the price, it's just fine.

Would I like the Tivo software more? Hell yes. Do I want to plunk down a couple hunge every few years for equipment on top of a $12-$15 monthly charge, on top of the cable box rental fee I already have to pay? Hell no. Now I'll just have to pay a few dollars more, and Comcast will cover all equipment replacement costs. Frankly, it's a better deal than just getting Tivo.

what equipment replacement? same box, different software

Re: replace the old software, dont make it a $$$$ option!

I know it's hard to follow.

The equipment replacement cost is inclusive if Comcast were to NOT allow Tivo on your set top box, instead of which you'd have to PURCHASE a tivo box to get Tivo service. You'd also have to purchase a new one everytime it broke/technology changed.

Which I responded to, each and every time.

Maybe you're confusion is that they are replacing the DVR software on your box automatically? They are offering the TIVO software for a fee, but you can still keep the old Mot/SA software, at your same low low price.
