From 768kbps/384kbps to 1Mbps/384kbps

tags: prices · competition · business · cable · Comcast
Two different insiders at Comcast have informed us that the company is upgrading the speed of their "Economy" tier nationwide, from 768Kbps/384Kbps to 1Mbps/384kbps. The tier is obviously aimed at light Internet users and sometimes used as a retention tool for canceling customers. According to our contacts, the upgrade will be impacting residential customers only -- business class customers will see the faster Economy upgrade sometime in the future. The tier was first unveiled back in February of 2007, offering symmetrical 384kbps at $24.95 per month to combat discount DSL tiers. The move (probably not coincidentally) comes right on the heels of Verizon increasing their base DSL tier from 768 Kbps/128 to 1Mbps/384kbps.

I don't think a free speed increase would make anyone cry.

That is the only thing keeping me from jumping ship to AT&T DSL for the moment. When U-Verse (Re-Verse) comes to my town, then I may consider it over Comcast. Until then, Comcast it is.

in the old days

Back in 2000 I signed up for comcast cable internet and it was great... great until att bought comcast and switched er... screwed up all the customers overnight. After that the service never worked right again. I got rid of it and tried again two years later after comcast had freed themselves from att. Service was horrible it only worked one day out of every month. FOUR ENGINEERS came out here and stared at blueprints for hours at a time and couldn't figure it out. I got rid of the service again and stuck to dialup after that.

Now I'm using komrade phone company dsl... the possible small caps and also the slimy way I was sold the current service are forcing me to consider comcast again because after december I will have to pay 32.95 just for dsl not counting my phone plan which I had to slim down to just basic service to keep the phone and dsl bill together lower than $60 a month.

My neigbors have been using comcast internet for about two years now and it works for them. We all live in the same apt complex so it should work for me now too. I think a while back some storm took out the cable and comcast finally had to replace something important but very old and thats maybe why my neighbor gets good signal lol.

How much is comcast internet at the "economy" price bundled with phone service anyway?

Well, they bought Media One, and Comcast gave them much of their subscriber base as the result of that transaction.

For most of the victims of the exchange, "AT&T bought Comcast" is an apt description.

Re: in the old days

Nearly as I can tell, MediaOne was spun off by Baby Bell US West (which was then bought by Qwest), and bought by AT&T. Then AT&T created "AT&T Broadband Internet" (ATTBI) to form a partnership with Comcast. In the end, ATTBI (not AT&T Corporation) was bought by Comcast.

It is a hell of a lot easier to sort out the inbreeding in the Ptolemaic family line (Cleopatra VII had only six great-grandparents; most people have sixteen) than it is to sort out the inbreeding in the telecom industry!

margins

Let me ask the important question.. after they did all the provisioning of the extra bandwidth.. did they actually go out and upgrade any external plant nodes that were already maxxed out(aka oversold) with customers?

Why would they do out and do anything to equipment that only converts light to RF and vice versa? The node isn't the bottleneck, it's much further up the pipeline. All that work is done in the head end.

AT&T has to make new commercials now...

Around Chicago AT&T has been advertising "internet that's 26 times faster than Comcast!"

Of course, they're comparing Uverse's fastest 18Mbps (sometimes, maybe) with the slowest possible Comcast (was 768k).

But nobody in the city limits in actually chicago can get U-verse to my knowledge right now..
including myself..

Dumb Comcast pricing structure.

Before Comcast bought out Adelphia in South Florida, Adelphia offered broadband service at reduced cost if the customer subscribed to the I believe they called their digital cable platinum package. The price was $24.95 per month for 6Mb Down. That is one of the reasons that I stuck with Adelphia and did not transfer to BellSouth DSL. Comcast should consider offering customers a real deal if they subscribe to their CATV top tier. What a great way to retain customers.

oh BOY!

a whole 256 kbps increase. What am I going to do with all this speed?

Uhm, fellas....AT&T DSL at 19.95 a month and Verizon DSL offering 3.0/768 for 5 dollars more are MUCH better deals!

Re: oh BOY!

most people have the economy package for a reason. if all you do is check email daily and watch stocks, i'm sure you wont mind.

if you get this package for downloading movies and music, then you're in the wrong one...

Doesn't match up with what I just received from Comcast.

we were insight subscribers, and very happy. We were getting the 10M speeds.
Since the changeover, rates are increasing and getting less for it. Since the changeover to Comcast, our speeds have dropped ~ a lot! today's speed test:4m/1m According to the brochure we were just sent, with the rate increases, we should be getting 6M/1M
It has been crawling all weekend, sometimes even timing out on getting email.

The "economy internet" (768kps/384kps) is $39.95! This brochure was in yesterday's mail.
