For the six of you who care about what your ISP portal looks like, Comcast has sent out an alert to customers informing them the company is doing a major revamp of their web portal. The new features include a streamlined interface, new mail notification widgets and a variety of new tools.

Users can head here to get a preview of the new layout, and for now, they have the option to use either the new or old format. The upgrade is quite welcome, considering Comcast is placing a renewed effort on being a king of content, yet the last incarnation of their website was "optimized for IE 5.5."

Comcast, whose primary portal sees 15 million unique visitors per month, also recently launched the Game Invasion portal and has been working on a YouTube knockoff named Ziddio. They also recently purchased Fandango and launched the beta of their Fancast project.

The only thing I use it for is to read webmail and delete the spam before downloading it with my POP3 e-mail program. I preferred the lite version that didn't use flash. Unfortunately they eliminated it.

So you log into webmail, delete the spam, log out and then read your mail in an email program? seems like alot of steps.

I agree with LeftOfSanity. That is a lot of steps. You can shorten that with a program that I use. It's called POP Peeper. It will actually shorten the process. »www.poppeeper.com/

Re: Welcome Improvement....

These pages could be used as a case study into just what ISPs think that the public wants. Comcast, Yahoo, etc., all look like a web version of the E! channel with input from TLC. I mean really; when are they going to give us useful stories like "what does Frank Stallone think about Brittany's Drinking problems" or "Rosie's having Donald Trumps illegitimate baby"!

To borrow from the Slowski's; they put the crap in Comcrap!

Thats because you get good enough to service to load the page in all it's GLORY ! /sarcasm off

Me and my neighbor were talking about this yesterday during the Colts game. Why are they Trying to be a content "king" give me my fat dumb and happy pipe. Make Comcast.net a web mail page with access to my account to make cable tv or Internet changes. Little news bits on the side and these crappy ads to try and advertise movies is ridiculous. Instead the site looks like a mix between an aborted prom night baby and AOL.

Yeah hows that page working out for AOL now ? Ah that's right it ain't doing so well for them either.

They only get so many hits because 3/4 of their hits come from non tech savvy users who can't change the start page and think that the start page is the gateway to the Internet , sort of like AOL had ? Ah again that didn't work out for them to well either.

For god's sake some one put a stop to these damn ISP portals ! Their only purpose is to get you to buy more crap so they can make even more money and not bother throwing us a shred of that back in lower rates.

Arm-chair QB'ing a football game is about the same as a Arm-chair CEO... You think you have all the answers, but are missing the years of experience and details on the field. I doubt the Comcast board or the savy stock holders would agree with following your direction for the long term future of a communications business.

Which is why a business should listen to their power users, but also focus the products around other business benefits of the 3/4 of the paying customers or future customer base.

All businesses need to know how to do well for their customer base and grow into other areas. MSO's growing into voice and commercial is as smart as telco's growing into video. Do or die.

Some may disagree, but this may be due to the fact you are looking at it from your personal need vs. the business needs.

What Portal should really have

Besides the option of logging in to get and pay your bill...

- bandwidth usage (cap avoidance)
- pay-per-view selection & scheduling
- add/drop plan packages
- channel blocking
- a la carte selection guide
- Customer satisfaction surveys

Of course they would have to actually publish a cap before you could avoid it.

I figure they could save dollars on keeping CS reps on the add/drop package selector alone.

You ever see the Simpsons episode where they are in Canada and bart and milhouse at the end are playing basketball with the Canadian Olympic team ? That has to be the board room of comcast.

"You almost made a customer happy , you should be CEO !"

I agree with you , all I want is a page where I don't have to call a CSR if I want to make changes to my service. Although for now all I have is cable modem service, but please allow me to view information pertaining to my services. Not some half assed attempt at AOL like status.

Re: What Portal should really have

These guys never seem to understand that they should be making their product the best in a COMMODITY MARKET because they are in a COMMODITY MARKET. Instead, they keep trying to pretend they are something other than a COMMODITY ISP that people use to reach destinations of their choice.

The sooner ISPs realize that there is as much product differentiation in their main offering as there is in windshield washer fluid, the sooner they will find that their job is to improve price, access, availability, and usefulness, and to stop worrying about the d@m^ label.

I'd like to see a neighborhood or node-specific status report including load, latency, etc.

One item worth having...

... CDV user here, so when I go to check my Comcast Webmail, I also get to see the Digital Voice center.

See all kinds of phone info and get my voicemail via the web.

Now most of the rest - I live fine without it...

silly little company

I think its so silly that Comcast will not allow Firefox rather you can use it but you get that dumb message saying its only optimized for IE 6, most folks who do anything on the web know IE is like dating your sister. (jk) its worse.

I opened Comcast.net in FF and it worked just fine for me. No error messages or nothing. It was even the new beta that opened.
