Comcast Really Doesn't Want 'Worst Company' Award This Year
Letters Urge Employees to Vote Multiple Times Across Devices
by Karl Bode Thursday 24-Mar-2011 tags: competition · business · consumers · Comcast
Tipped by Alcohol See Profile
The folks over at the Consumerist annually now run their "Worst Company in America Tournament" (you can find the complete competition bracket here), a light-hearted way to allow annoyed consumers to vent some of their accumulated angst. You'll perhaps recall that Comcast won the award last year, going so far as to beat out companies like Ticketmaster and Bank Of America for the "honor."

Eager to avoid a repeat, the Consumerist notes that Comcast has sent out numerous memos urging employees to stuff the ballot box over at the website. While the letters make it clear that such voting is voluntary, they do urge employees to vote via multiple devices, while reminding them to vote for the other company, in case the concept confused them:

Our great company has been nominated by The Consumerist as one of the "Worst Companies in America in 2011" in their annual survey. We have all been working very hard to create a customer experience that we are proud of and need to come together to send a strong message that we simply don't deserve this title. . . Feel free to vote from the office and at home on your personal computers and laptops. You can also vote via the web browser on your cell phones, iPads, tablets and other web-enabled wireless devices. When you cast your ballot, vote for the other company. Remember, you're voting for the "Worst Company in America."

Of course if Comcast's customer improvement efforts are actually working, there should be no need to stuff the ballot box, right? Apparently the effort is not working anyway. Comcast is beating Charter in the first round of voting by a significant margin. Time Warner Cable has also beaten Facebook in the first round.

The caps, the lies (sandvine), the threats, the rudeness, the outages, the price hikes, the digital migration of channels to encrypted to force you to rent digital boxes for perfectly capable digital TV's count besides the contractors.

IQ level and how is is associated with management levels.

90 - 109 - Normal or average intelligence ( typical employee )

80 - 89 - Dullness ( local mangement )

70 - 79 - Borderline deficiency ( regional mangement )

Under 70 - Definite feeble-mindedness ( corporate office )

You never get anywhere in a company unless you show the lack of ability to do any meaningful work. The CEO has his job because it's the job with the least amount of work because that's all he's qualified to do. Which is to look busy and important.

Thus Comcast demonstrates why it deserves the award...

UPDATE BELOW!

Hey, Comcast: you're STILL doing it wrong!

Another example of Comcast stuffing the ballot box...

»Did Comcast Hire Public Stand-ins For Neutrality Hearing?
UPDATE 11:27AM EDT: I take it back.
The Consumerist sent a letter to all nominees encouraging it to "rally the troops," which is exactly what Comcast is doing. It's impossible to now fault them for doing it.

Sad

You'd think with all the IPs that Comcast owns they could easily write a script that would do all the voting for them.

Don't all businesses do something like this?

Our company put out a Super Bowl commercial and everyone got an email telling us where to go vote (multiple sites) for it as the best commercial. Just a company trying to push it's brand.

Nothing to see here, move along...

Message to employees: "We have no ethics, and we now expect you to have none."

How about voting for the one that is actually the best commercial?

It's called Marketing 101 - Any company wants its employees to push its brand. More exposure, more business, more income... pretty simple math. Would you prefer your employees bad mouthed you everywhere? THAT would be sad...

There's nothing unethical or unconscionable about 'asking' employees to support the company that pays them. No one is forced to vote yea or nay.

Re: Don't all businesses do something like this?

In this Consumerist case, I take it back. But I maintain that stuffing a consumer opinion poll is unethical.

I now work in IT & networking in the hospitality field (restaurants and hotels) -- a field FULL of consumer surveys and reviews. I think you should never, ever stuff these polls. First, it's wrong. Second, it's so obvious. Third, it promotes all the wrong internal behavior (fixing perceptions rather than fixing problems). Finally, the repercussions are worse than the bad review.

Have you ever stood in line at a Comcast office on a Saturday morning? Clearly, from that experience alone, this is a business that wouldn't win "best company." Secondly, I called in due to bad reception on a digital channel (blocking/pixelation with audio drop outs) and they charged me $30 and still didn't fix the problem. Yet, I've never failed to be hit with their twice-yearly price increases for channels that are increasingly "paid advertising" instead of desirable content. There are bright spots, but consumers are overall getting the shaft from this company, but there is little to no competition and so they prosper. It's no surprise to find them leading a "worst company" poll, and it does seem entirely avoidable.

But they still are...

If they spent half the time working on improving their customer service as they did implementing the project to send out "vote for us" memos, they might improve, even the slightest.

Personally, I've had such poor experiences with them that I can't even write a coherent post. If I keep writing, this will turn into an uneducated rant...

Comcast could try the government's approach

quote:
The California company Ntrepid was awarded a $2.76 million contract by U.S. Central Command to provide “online persona management” software to spread pro-American propaganda overseas through foreign social networks.

The fake online identities, known as “sock puppets,” would allow one member of the military to control up to 10 separate personalities around the globe, with up to 50 U.S.-based controllers in total, which would be able to organize a coordinated intervention as a group if need be, writes Ian Cobain of The Guardian.
From the Guardian:
quote:
The discovery that the US military is developing false online personalities – known to users of social media as "sock puppets" – could also encourage other governments, private companies and non-government organisations to do the same.

The Centcom contract stipulates that each fake online persona must have a convincing background, history and supporting details, and that up to 50 US-based controllers should be able to operate false identities from their workstations "without fear of being discovered by sophisticated adversaries".

Comcast vs Charter

I'm one of the rare folks that's worked for both Charter and Comcast - IMHO Comcast is by far a better company from a service, product and employee perspective.

Not going to happen

I would love for Comcast to not get the "Golden Poo" trophy this year but its not looking good at least as far as my personal experience is going so far.

I had a cable card in my Media Center PC fail a firmware upgrade and it had to be replaced. Mind you when I called them last year to pair this card they got it paired up first try.

I am now on attempt number 5 for Comcast to pair my new card and they can't complete the job while I am on the phone and I now have 4 promises (from each subsequent call after the first) promising to get the issue resolved if I would just let them off the phone so they could talk to level 3 and I still do not have a paired cable card.

Not only is Comcast failing to get the job done... they have lied to me 4 times now. It's time to contact the Comcast Twitter engineers and if that doesn't do it I plan to involve the Consumerist for a little public shame.

Stuffing the Ballot Box

Perhaps Comcast doesn't realize that it also provides an opportunity for disgruntled employees to stuff the ballot box with more votes for Comcast as the worst company. A gun can point both ways...

Consumerist

Click for full size
The consumerist is saying that "RALLY YOUR TROOPS TO VOTE FOR THE COMPETITION" really meant to rally the customer base.. . I dont think anyone reading what is above would infer that.

So if Comcast sent this out to its customer base ( which would probably cause MORE of an uproar...spam and all..) they would never hear the end of it.
After all.. isnt it just a ploy to get more people to THEIR site, the consumerist?

"Rally your customer base to come to our site and vote for another company theyve never used as the worst in America!!!"

Doesnt that sound more fishy then the reality? What the hell is this poll worth if they are encouraging other companies to have their customers vote for a company they have never used or heard of?

Damned if you do... etc

Hot off the heels of a price increase, I'm now learning that the company that wants to impress me with their service (I'm not impress with their rates!) is telling employees to use their valuable time to stuff online ballot boxes. I voted for charter.

You don't see them touting 100+ Mbps speeds and upstream bonding with 30+Mbps. You don't see reports of them doing a digital transition. At least comcasts digital transition puts them in a good position for 100's of HD channels. Charter always seems so far behind. Do they have an iPad app that can control the DVR yet? Comcast was ahead of the game with apps and universal authentication so you can watch content online via Fancast. Their VoD library is quite extensive with 1000's of hours of HD content as well. You have to look at it from a technical standpoint, not a few bad experiences here and there.
