Comcast Protests Merger Conditions At FCC
Doesn't want neutrality, Internet video requirements
by Karl Bode Friday 26-Nov-2010 tags: legal · competition · fcc · business · alternatives · cable
With Comcast and NBC's immense lobbying firepower, there's virtually no chance their merger will be denied by regulators -- and while there will be some conditions, recent history suggests the conditions may only give a quick nod to substantive consumer protections. Rumors have suggested the FCC has at least considered neutrality and/or conditions requiring Comcast share content with Internet video alternatives. Comcast and NBC executives met with FCC officials last week to argue against Internet video content sharing or neutrality conditions:

Comcast and NBC Universal executives met with senior officials at the Federal Communications Commission this week, urging the agency against conditions to their proposed merger that would require the new company to provide shows and movies to Internet video distributors. The Monday meeting comes after sources indicated to Post Tech that federal regulators would impose such conditions on their merger. The merger, proposed one year ago, is close to gaining approval if Comcast agrees to voluntary conditions on video program access to Internet companies like Apple TV and Google TV, sources said.

As we've been covering, major networks, Viacom, and Hulu have all been blocking Google TV users from accessing their content using the embedded Google TV browser -- and these actions appear to be at the forefront of the FCC's consideration of the merger.

lots of luck..

NBC and Comcast own enough people in Congress to make sure the merger goes through easily and without real restrictions from the FCC. The FCC knows full well they won't be able to impose the restrictions, but is just posturing trying to show they care about consumers.

Re: lots of luck..

so, with the poliferation of video content online, Comcast knows that there will be no real money in the rights to NBC shows or content. The real money will be with the metered billing thats soon to hit the fan. But remember, in 2008, Comcast wasn't in favor of it (yeah right!) »Comcast: Metered Billing Is Not The Answer

Re: lots of luck..

Comcast will never see these conditions and the FCC has NO legal power to make Comcast give up that content NBC or Comcast created to GoogleTV or Hulu. And actually Hulu would then be OWNED by Comcast so that is a moot provider. As far as GoogleTV? they wanna provide- they pay to provide. The FCC can't force them to give up the content. They paid for it from start to finish- NOT Goog. It's time for Google to step up and PAY for what they want to do instead of leach off the actual content owners.

I'm not sure you get what Google is trying to do with Google TV. They will be generating revenue (through ads) which will go to the content creators (in this case, Comcast/NBC). On top of that, they are more than likely throwing a truckload of cash upfront to try and ease the content creators into the deal. Google isn't asking the content creators to just give up their content without any reimbursement, they are pitching a ground floor revenue model to the content creators. Comcast/NBC/Fox/Whoever you want to name here are just afraid of a changing business model, just like the recording industry was; the difference here is that Google is offering a chance to make money off of the new distribution models from the get go. The content creators can decide now: embrace the digital revolution, or go kicking and screaming against new revenue streams trying to give you their money. Ask the record industry how that worked out...

At least comcast only owns 20% of CSN Chicago or that channel may be pulled for directv , rcn , wow , ATT, dish. The teams can pull out and that's what killed FSN CHICAGO. Can WGN make there OWN RSN's?

As for the cable only channels if may end if comcast not being able to keep it that way and the fcc makeing so NFL ST ends up Comcast in 2011 if there is football that year.

The swastika, along with his avatar, are just symbols. Symbols have no meaning unless given them. The fact that you are disgusted by them shows that you give irrational meaning to symbols. It is, in fact, you who have an issue, not him.

Think about it.

The symbols themselves did nothing.

This is such a bad deal, I wish they would kill it...

The FCC killed the Dish / Direct TV deal and it has WAY less impact on consumers then this deal. I am glad to see there are people out there saying this is a bad deal all around. You can bet the removal of NBC content from Hulu / Amazon on demand / iTunes will be the first order of business and making all that content available on there own website for their customers will happen.

This is a BIG MISTAKE and will take us all back 10 years as cable companies scramble to try to make IP TV less attractive to consumers.

The next order of business will be of course to buy up Time Warner Cable and possibly Cox/Charter to make a single cable supergiant...

Yep.. It's the decade of Mergers.. Looks like SBC started it all.

By decades' end, there will only be 2 companies for each service (working together of course).

Two? Wouldn't go that far, but I'm guessing there will be Comcast plus small regionals for cable, and AT&T plus small regionals for telephone. AT&T will take significantly longer...CenturyLink or Windstream have to buy up Frontier first, then merge, and Verizon and AT&T have to merge, then buy up the big rural carrier...

As for cellular companies, T-Mobile, Sprint, MetroPCS and CricKet will eventually consolidate into one company, to be bought by a marged Verizon+AT&T.

But the above will probably take 15 years...

Trust me Verizon and AT&T would never merge, it's not in anyone's interests, a lot of people would lose their jobs in that merger with both companies having over 300k jobs each. Not to mention the economic circles that exist around each company as part of equipment and such would result in much more layoffs when the death star (god forbid) happened to be rebuilt. Were talking billions of dollars wiped out of the economy within 1 year, and billions more over the next decade.

Big business wants to do whatever it wants without rules

Is this what the teabaggers voted for? Sorry teabaggers, but when a republican tells you he fis or "less governemnt" he's for less government in BUSINESS not less governent in YOUR personal affairs. They are all for that. People are suppsoed to follow rules but corporation don't? "Don't put rules on us or we won't hire people" Screw them. If they don't hire people they won't be in business now will they?

Way to go off topic.

This merger was in the works long before the mid term elections. Considering those that won the last round aren't even in power yet, how can you pin the tail on the "teabaggers"?

Oh, and you might find occasion to hit the spell check button before you post.

I won't even TOUCH the grammar....

NBC is the most liberal media outlet out there and you're blaming this on "teabaggers???"

Amen to that. The FCC can't even collect a $21000 fine from some renegade ham radio operator. They definitely don't have the balls to stand up to GE/NBC.

Here's what will happen...

First off, Comcrap will lower their monthly cap from 250 gB to 100 gB, claiming that most consumers don't use even 100 gb. They might also lower the price a buck or two to make people believe they are a 'good' corporate citizen. These assholes might even have the balls to claim this will 'help' consumers in the current economic climate (while companies like THEM are responsible for it's continuation). They will also institute a steep ($1.00/gB) overage charge. The first month the average Netflix streaming customer gets their bill they'll fall off their chair-because they'll have 50-100 dollars of overage charges (but of course, it's THEIR fault-they should have watched their consumption meter that Comacast makes almost impossible to find).

BUT remember-Comcast is a GOOD corporate citizen (NOT!) so they'll take care of it for you. All you have to do is sign up for THEIR new Netflix like service (run by NBC/Universal)-because using it WON'T COUNT against your 100 gB cap! People will dump Netflix in droves and sign up for Comcrap's service.

So either way, Comcrap wins-and the consumer LOSES!!!
