Comcast Launches Free 'Xfinity' Wi-Fi In parts of Delaware, Philadelphia and New Jersey In January of 2009 we learned that Comcast was engaged in a trial to offer free Wi-Fi service in and around the NYC commuter region, piggybacking in on Cablevision's Wi-Fi hardware mounts. In March of last year Comcast began pushing Wi-Fi throughout New Jersey, though the service was still technically a trial. Today they've dropped us a line to note they're officially launching the service (named "Xfinity WiFi") across Northern New Jersey, "key beach towns along the Jersey shore" and the Philadelphia Metro area at no additional cost to Comcast residential broadband customers. 2,000 hotspots have gone live at this time (a location map is here), and all can be accessed with your existing Comcast username and password. Comcast is of course following in the heels of Cablevision, which has deployed service around the NYC commute area in order to help offer an additional perk in their competitive fight against Verizon FiOS. However, Comcast tells us that unlike around NYC, this is not a shared deployment with Cablevision. This deployment appears to be Northeast only -- for now. "We plan to increase the number of spots in this area before the end of the year, but do not have plans to launch WiFi in other markets or nationally at this time," says Comcast.

I tried this xfinity wifi out Sunday while visiting sister in Yardley,PA. 2 locations near her had it up and running. A Starbucks Coffee Shop(which also had ATTWifi SSID up & active too) and the local commuter train station. Got on very briefly at both locations just to try it out. It worked OK and speeds were 15 mbps down at train station(no other users in sight) and half of that at Starbucks(lots of customers there; some looked to be on internet).

1 edit | Pop up in surprising areas I continue to be surprised as to where these pop up. I use my iPhone and have "xfinitywifi" remembered and I'll get prompted to log in seemingly random locations. There's actually one about 1/2 a mile from where I work, but alas it doesn't reach to where I work.
The strangest location I saw was in a hospital room in Temple University Hospital in Philly. I couldn't get it anywhere in the hospital except in one recovery room where someone I was visiting happened to be staying.
I have had problems connecting to some of them though. Occasionally I'll log in and then get a message telling me I need to log in after I've already done so. Other times I'll never get an IP address after selecting one. Still other times, I'll successfully log in, but not get any data (slower than 3G).
Most of the time though they work fine.

| Noticed recent the deployment, but not a Comcast customer... Comcast has been hanging these hotspots all over town where I live, but I never knew the range each one provides, or the coverage of the entire system.
Looks pretty substantial so far, it's a nice start as I can see.
Sorry, I am not a Comcast customer, but I can only confirm that they are aggressively hanging their hotspots all over the place.
At first, I wondered what they were, but now I can visually spot these xfinity hotspot nodes everywhere.. -- ROCK 'TIL SUNSET
| | | | Re: Noticed recent the deployment, but not a Comcast customer... Not being a Comcast customer and having Comcast deploy a giant access point (i.e. many users crowding the 2.4 GHz band) where I use my own private AP not for profit would make me very upset. | |
