Comcast Expands Home Security Service
Denver Latest to Get Comcast's New Play
In late 2010 we noted that Comcast had jumped into the home security game, launching Xfinity Home Security service in Houston. The platform provides the usual range of home security options, including door and window intrusion detection and video monitoring via a Comcast website, with the company's Xfinity Home Preferred Package starting at $39.95 per month. Comcast's slowly been expanding the service into additional markets, and today announced they're offering it in Denver. Peace of mind from Comcast doesn't come cheap, the service features a very steep early termination fee: $770 for the basic service, and $1100 for the Premier service. You'll also have to pay an activation fee (which Comcast waives for new markets, and an installation charge of between $200 & $300).

Not Funny

When they do network maintenance between 12am-6am
Your CDV phone will not work to call the police or fire.

Your alarm will be worthless as well.
The system won't be able to let anyone know your home is being broken into while they have things down.

No thanks.

Re: Not Funny

The system has cellular backup.

The monitoring is data, not on the CDV service.

Completely incorrect.

The system comes with a cellular backup for use during times of power outages or system outages.

I think it is a cool product and I like that they're trying to expand their networking capabilities, but I don't think I would subscribe to this.

I thing they use the same type of contractors that ADT and others use so it's about the same.

Hah...

If there's a break-in, the cops will show up sometime between 8am and 5pm on a Wednesday. But if there's a break-in on a Sunday, you'll have to wait for the next business day for them to show up.

If a Comcast tech wants to break in to a house, now he'll have access to a list of houses with the service and the ability to turn it off for himself. We've all seen the antics of the Comcast techs in the past.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is true for other alarm providers as well.

From what I have heard, the installer codes can not be used to disarm the system if it was not armed using the installer code.

Well there's 2 things to consider... first, even if a rogue installer doesn't know the code, he knows enough about the details of the security system to not have to need it. The code might not be needed if you live in a place like San Jose, or if you are savvy enough to be able to prevent the system from contacting the monitoring service.

Secondly, all a security system can do is deter someone from breaking in, it can't physically stop someone who wants to break into your house. If someone really wants to break in, they'll find a way to do it.

If there is a break-in in San Jose, CA, the cops will NEVER show up. Due to budget cutbacks, they will no longer respond to automated alarms. If a neighbor calls to report a burglary they see in progress, they will respond to that, but that's it.
