Phillies win world series, fan thinks Comcast helped...
08:45AM Thursday Oct 30 2008 by Karl Bode
tags: business · cable · Oddities · Comcast
An anonymous reader writes in this morning: "Prior to 1987 there was a gentlemen's agreement never to build a building taller than the statue of the city's founding father William Penn. When Liberty Place was built in 1987, some believe this upset the sports gods and the city of Philadelphia was cursed with never winning a championship since. In 2007, the Comcast Tower was built making it the tallest building in Philladephia. The tower was also topped off with a likeness of William Penn as an attempt to break the cities 2 decade old curse.

Last night the Philladelphia Phillies won the world series! Conicidence, or did Comcast help end the curse?"

Billy Goat

If Comcast can get a Billy Goat into Wrigley... AND get the Cubs to win a Championship.... Well THAT would be something.

Well you have to admit. The only thing you can do is prove the point, it happened in accordance with the terms of the curse. So there's no disproving it at this juncture.

Absolutely

The notion that the likeness of William Penn being on top of the tallest building in Philadelphia broke the long-running curse is absolutely, 100% correct. I think in terms of sports curses this was the worst because one of our teams would always come SO CLOSE...

This curse was so bad that it even cost Smarty Jones the Triple Crown back in 2004.

Well let's see

They have 4 sports teams X 25 sports seasons each -( 1994 MLB strike season) and -( 2004-2005 NHL lockout ) and that's 98 seasons since their last championsip in 1983 when the 76ers won the NBA title. So statistically you would think in 98 seasons you'd eventually win ONE championship.

The Iggles can start by dumping McNabb and getting a real QB. McNabb is a nice guy and all but he always chokes near the end of a game.

Re: Humm

I was in Vegas for the infamous vomit moment..

The Eagles could have won that game. What a kick in the teeth that was for Philadelphia fans.

I agree the Eagles could do a lot of good by ditching McNabb, but the problem is he sells swag, and it's all about the Benjamin's.

WS games ending at 2 AM proved that.....

Uh, over 20 years since any team in the city won, not just a single sport. Chicago and Boston/New England both had at least on team win.

Curses and stuff.

If anyone believes in the curses and stuff than I have a bridge to sell you. The reason the Phillies won is because I didn't watch the games and other years I had tendency to watch bits of the games. Hmmm lets see if it works for the Eagles too. SO there the secret is out.

What an awesome story...

You know..seriously..with all the doom and gloom in this country and economy today as I looked at those photos it instilled in me the thought of how much Comcast is really bucking the trend. A company that could have gone anywhere building instead their new skyscraper in the place they and even we as Americans call home. Capping it off with such a respect for tradition. I see real pride there in the photos and faces of the workers..and success for this country and what makes it great.

And look at the results. Not just in winning the game..but by their corporate results posted here on this website yesterday. A company really competing..offering great services..and showing what winning is really all about.

How about it..America? How about everyone stepping up to the same kinds of challenges. Companies and employees alike getting back to tradition..innovation..and a sense of hard work. A sense of giving of yourselves as much as is asked for in return.

We can bring this country back. Comcast is proving that.

Rick, Seriously. I enjoy my job too but.. I like the company I work for. But come on. are you running for CEO of Comcast or something like that? I was glad when I saw the Willie Penn statue placed at the top. I was heartbroken when it was stolen. and I was relieved that Comcast replaced it. But to set them as the example all corporations should use as a model thats a bit extreme isn't it. Were taking Fan Boy to whole new levels here.

Yup

They absolutely helped. Its crazy coincidences like this that make fans believe in curses. Being a diehard Philly fan (all Philly teams), I love what I am seeing from our teams since this happened. Keep in mind, even if you dont believe in curses, people do, and at the very least something like could ever so slightly relieve some pressure felt by these teams.

Ya never know.

And for the first time in my lifetime, I am able to say the following: PHILADELPHIA! WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!!!

Re: Cleveland

Cleveland doesn't have four major sports teams, however. People were making a big deal about this because Philadelphia used to be the only city with four teams with such a streak. It would make sense that Cleveland would win fewer championships because they have fewer teams.

At least Sarah Palin didn't throw out the first pitch

When Sarah Palin dropped the ceremonial puck at the Flyers' home opener, they went 0-6. She dropped it at the Blues game, they lost. No other stadium has since offered her the honor. That's one big reason to keep politics out of sports.

Back on topic...
Comcast Sportsnet covered the 76ers game going on at the same time as the Phillies game. It's across the street from Citizens Bank park. The Sixers lost (to the Raptors). Maybe Comcast absorbed all the bad karma in the area which put down the Rays for good. If the energy is channeled through Billy Penn's hat on the Comcast building, all the better.

I was at the Phillies game.
