According to a Comcast press release, the nation's largest cable operator will be deploying faster DOCSIS 3.0 speeds in their Washington State and Oregon markets in December. In upgraded markets, Comcast is not only upgrading existing speed tiers ($42.95 "Performance" 6Mbps/1Mbps and $52.95 "Performance Plus" 8Mbps/2Mbps tiers became 12Mbps/2Mbps and 16Mbps/2Mbps), but is adding two new tiers to the mix ($62.95 "Ultra" 22Mbps/5Mbps and $139.95 "Extreme 50" 50Mbps/10Mbps). The announcement notes that the all residents in Washington and Oregon will see the upgrades, not just more profitable and competitive markets:
"Wideband utilizes our fiber optic network that is already in the ground in neighborhoods across our footprint. With this next generation of service, our customers’ online experience is dramatically enhanced. Best of all, these faster Internet speeds are available to all of our customers throughout the state, no matter where they live," said Len Rozek, Senior Vice President of Comcast’s Washington market.
After debuting a faster 50Mbps DOCSIS 3.0 tier in the twin cities last April, Comcast unveiled the faster speeds in their Metro Boston, Twin Cities, Northern New England and Southern Massachusetts markets last month. The cable operator has promised to deploy DOCSIS 3.0 upgrades to 20% of their footprint by the end of this year, and all customers by the end of 2010.

I fail to understand whats the big deal. If there going to cap it what difference does it make? I guess at the top end you can get the option of paying them for overages faster.

Many users don't download more because they have faster speeds. It just means they get what they want faster. Just because you can drive faster in a Ferrari vs a Yugo doesn't mean you drive further to work everyday.

I had a service call last Friday. The tech who came out said they have been testing DOCSIS 3.0 in Monterey County, CA.

I hope to see it soon!!!

Re: Comcast

No he knows exactly what's going on. What's the point of paying more for a 50/10 connection if your going to use it up around 10 x times faster lol. Since when did you become a statistics holder for the "average person". There is no such thing as an "average user", and if there is it's definately not you.

Docsis 3.0

Why can't their Extreme tier be 50/20?? I mean DOCSIS 3.0 should easily be able to handle that right???

Getting the cable modem's to certify with the doc 3 standard has not been clear sailing. The first wave of modems are not capable of the full bonded channels on the upload side. Eventually it will be capable of 50/20 or more.

Montana Love?

damn im paying $56 dollars a month for 5/384 speeds while they are getting a 16/2 tier for 3 dollars less. I wish bresnan would get bought out and comcast would take over. even their highest speed is 15/1.

The pricing is wrong!

Got an official Comcast letter with this months bill telling me they are raising the price of the Blast! tier another $10. No explanation as to why!

Not only that, they insulted my intelligence by wording the letter that I should be happy because I have to do nothing while this takes place.

That is likely because Ultra will be replacing Blast at that price (how much have you been cracking your head against the cap ceiling at your current speeds?). Most (in fact, all) the ones that have been complaining about getting a letter talking about a price increase are also the ones complaining about caps; while I did crack the caps twice, I have not gotten any such price-increase letter (Blast customr in the Washington, DC area).

Not so far...I have yet to see anything that looks like an upgrade to blast in ATL. Uverse has 18mbps in ATL, but comcast has 8 with a very short boost.

I would love to see them do the upgrades, but it seems that the southeast always takes a long long time to get done.

Can hit my caps twice as fast now...

Awesome, now I can hit that cap twice as fast!

Seriously, I don't see why the caps don't double with the bandwidth, as they've obviously got the extra space given the speed increases (and, of course, the inevitable price hike).

Re: Can hit my caps twice as fast now...

The caps are not set in stone, nowhere does it state that the caps WON'T be changed in future. And are you saying that anyone who gets an increase in speed will automatically have a change in behavior? My speeds doubled recently due to upgrade, this doesn't mean I now play ffxi for 10-12hours a day and that my kids now play WOW 4-8 hours a day. MOST people will have the same amount of usage as before, they just do some things a bit faster then before.
