Signs deal with Nortel...
(old news - 09:14AM Tuesday Jan 22 2008)
tags: business · wireless · VoIP · Clearwire Wireless
WiMax provider Clearwire has struck a deal with Nortel Networks to provide VoIP service to their wireless broadband customers. While Clearwire currently offers VoIP in 37 of the company's 46 markets, this will be the first time they'll be doing so over their own infrastructure. Clearwire will use Nortel's Application Server (AS) 5200 to deliver SIP applications, and Nortel's Communication Server 2000, an IP multimedia softswitch that handles long distance and local number portability services. Remember of course that Echostar and DirecTV will be reselling Clearwire service, which means they may also be reselling this VoIP service eventually.

Wow!

Nothing unexpected...but will the sip device be locked to their own voip service? They better not!!! Having wireless voip service anywhere means death to all cell phone carriers! Although I heard that Clearwire internet is crap.....Hopefully, Sprint does not follow their path...

3rd party VoIP on Clearwire

When I looked into Clearwire, their TOS prohibited the use of VoIP services over their network. Will they allow subscribers to use Vonage, CallVantage, ViaTalk, etc., or will they attempt to prohibit those still?

I may not like them doing it, but it is their network...

And they should rightly expect to get slapped down by the FCC for doing it. Madison River did the same thing and got a nice, big ruler across the back of their hands.

Oversubscribed

I used Clearwire for a year. Used VoIP until they oversubscribed the network.

Anyone who thinks they can run VoIP on Clearwire between 3pm-10pm is kidding themselves. Its completely over subbed and your calls will clip.

Wait until someone tries to make a 911 call on a rainy day and can't get through.

Re: Oversubscribed

To test in your area, try going down to Best Buy during rush hours, they should have at least one computer with clearwire setup on it. Noon time, AWESOME for what it is. 6PM,
