Nearly half a year after Clearwire launched their Mobile WiMax service in Portland, the company has just four markets officially launched: Portland, Atlanta, Baltimore, and Las Vegas. The company had been telling the press they'd be launching 80 markets in 18 months, and to pad those numbers a bit they just announced plans to launch Mobile WiMax in a slew of smaller Texas towns on September 1. In a conference call discussing the company's earnings this morning, the company said it was "on track" to cover 25 markets and over 30 million users by the end of this year. Clearwire CEO Bill Morrow promises a late-year growth spurt, saying the company anticipates that "fourth-quarter net subscribers additions will be higher than all other quarters in 2009 combined."

Exactly! Xohm's WiMax signal has been hit and miss in Chicago for the last 2 months. I believe it's due to the fact that the backhaul network is being reconfigured off of "Sprint Mobile Broadband" and many of the Chicago area WiMax tower sites were just taken offline completely until the switchover occurs. As of two weeks ago, my Xohm USB modem was working again in Schaumburg. My home modem has not worked in Aurora for months now I hope they get the ball rolling here because Chicago going live will be huge for Clear.

September 1? Really guys?

I have to leave for school on the 24th. One measly week before they get San Antonio and Austin launched. Which might mean coverage for my area here. Or it might now.

Guess I'll have to trust the rest of the family to set the gear up (shouldn't be too hard, just find a good signal spot and plug in the rout...oh wait, they need to DMZ the router, that's right...then again we're NATed right now so not a huge difference) if Clear gets here when I'm gone.

Re: Bring it!

I thought WiMax was all about serving areas that didn't currently get service or only had one option... every single market they are deploying in has at least 2 options serving nearly every household.

Yeah, thats the theory.. But we all know how that goes.. Quickest in theory money first... Always.. Never mind the fact that underserved areas will only have THEM as the option when they deploy, thous they will have the market..

But , I"m not specialist... Just the same as the GM specialist back in 2003 said that noone wants higher MPG cars, they are happy with gas guzzlers... Lol... God some buisness's really do miss the mark

Clearwire

Chicago should go live in November, possibly sooner. Expect great signals almost everywhere. I should know.

Re: Clearwire

How close to being finished is the infrastructure in Grand Rapids, MI?

I think they are waiting for the SprintPCS trial to proceed before actually announcing availability.

Yes Very much so as long as there are no snags with keeping up with the pace by some particular groups

There was some hope and expectation that Clearwire would at least unofficially launch Chicago by 4G World (which includes WiMAX World), which is just over a month away.

There will probably be some egg on Clearwire's face if they can't do that. =/

Clear in PDX

how about actually covering all of portland?
North of I-84 = iffy
East of I-205 = no coverage
At least that is what their online coverage checker says

I'm getting tired of seeing the Clear commercials saying they cover the entire city when they actually only cover 1/3 of it.

Re: Clear in PDX

I get tired of seeing all these DSL and cable ads saying call today to get service the next day. It sucks being on the edge.
