While Clearwire's mobile WiMax network in Atlanta was unofficially live back in May, Clearwire today made the market launch official. According to a Clearwire press release, the launch makes Atlanta the nation's largest Mobile WiMax market -- serving nearly three million people across approximately 1,200 square miles. Clearwire hopes to reach 120 million Americans with the technology by the end of 2010. In addition to the live markets of Atlanta, Baltimore and Portland, Clearwire's expected to launch eigght additional markets in 2009, including Las Vegas (also already unofficially live), Dallas and Fort Worth, Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle, Honolulu and Charlotte.

Need to get some large markets going to be successful

Nice - lets get some competition for overpriced cable/dsl.

The only problem is that these are still 'smallish' markets.
Chicago, Dallas/Ft.Worth are pretty big.

Still nothing much for California or NYC... just the flyovers.
Houston, Miami, L.A., NYC, haven't been touched.

WiMAX is a failed technology. Clear is promising P2P throttling in their TOS. LTE will debut in 2010, and with VZ's cash flow, LTE will be in all major metro areas in 12 months, i expect a EVDO style rollout, EVDO debuted in NYC around the financial district and the airports. 2 years in, I get service at my house in 2006. In 4 years I can drive anywhere and not loose coverage. Even my boondocks no cable no DSL grandparents have EVDO in a mountain range from VZ which they got in 2007.

AT&T on the other hand, is a joke. Their coverage viewer on pupose doesn't allow you to see 3G unless you zoom in really close, so you can't see how much of AT&T doesn't have it. AT&T seems to have stopped their 3G roll out at the edge of suburbia. No rural/farm area.

Plus remember VZ bought a national license for LTE, AT&T has small chunks of 700 »cellularmap.net/700_auction.shtml. VZ could go 100% LTE, no 2G bands or fallback. AT&T will be stuck with GSM/3G fallback with their LTE (if they ever deploy). Also VZ bought the "open access" band, so VZ is not feeling as profit driven as AT&T.

Why specifically is Wimax a failed technology in your humble opinion?

As for the promise of p2p throttling according to what I could find on Clear's acceptable use policy: "While the determination of what constitutes excessive use depends on the specific state of the network at any given time, excessive use will be determined by resource consumption and not by the use of any particular application."

Your faith in VZW is rather amusing, but time will tell. As far as your contention that VZW "is not feeling as profit driven as..." LMAO!!! That's priceless...pure naiveté at best. I doubt that there is ever a time when VZW isn't primarily and unswervingly profit driven, but hey, keep hope alive!

quote:
Excessive Utilization of Network Resources. Wireless networks have capacity limits and all customers can suffer from degraded or denied service when one or a small group of users consumes disproportionate amounts of a wireless network's resources. Clearwire, therefore, will monitor both overall network performance and individual resource consumption to determine if any user is consuming a disproportionate amount of available resources and creating the potential to unreasonably disrupt or degrade the Clearwire network or network usage by others. Clearwire reserves the right to engage in reasonable network management to protect the overall network, including detecting malicious traffic patterns and preventing the distribution of viruses or other malicious code, and through techniques such as limiting the aggregate bandwidth available to bandwidth intensive users during periods of congestion. While the determination of what constitutes excessive use depends on the specific state of the network at any given time, excessive use will be determined by resource consumption and not by the use of any particular application. When feasible, upon observation of an excessive use pattern, Clearwire will attempt to contact you by e-mail at the e-mail address on file or otherwise to alert you to your excessive use of bandwidth and to help determine the cause. Clearwire representatives also are available to explain the parameters of this AUP and to help you avoid another excessive use incident or to upgrade you to a different class of Service that comports with your usage. If you are unavailable or do not respond to Clearwire's attempt to contact you regarding excessive use, or if excessive use is ongoing or recurring, Clearwire reserves the right, set forth in the "AUP Enforcement and Notice" provisions below, to act immediately and without further notice to restrict, suspend or terminate your Service.

Sounds like VZW's "the letter" codified and shutting off your phone until you contact "network security dept".

3. Data Plans/Overages - Applicable only to CLEAR Accounts

You will be entitled to use the CLEAR Service for the bandwidth amounts and download speeds (collectively referred to as the "Plan Amount") listed on your Order Confirmation. If you exceed your allotted Plan Amount, Clearwire will automatically charge you and you agree to pay an additional internet service usage fee per gigabyte of additional bandwidth pursuant to the provisions of your Order Confirmation (the "Overage Charge"). Your Plan Amount does not roll-over, but expires at the end of each month with all unused amounts forfeited.

Sounds like Verizon right?

12. Network Management. You acknowledge that speed and bandwidth available to each computer or device connected to the network may vary for reasons including, but not limited to the number of users, computers or devices connected to the network, the amount of data being transferred over the network, and available bandwidth. You also agree that Clearwire reserves the right to engage in reasonable network management to protect the overall network, including detecting malicious traffic patterns and preventing the distribution of viruses or other malicious code, and through techniques such as limiting the aggregate bandwidth available to bandwidth intensive users during periods of congestion. While the determination of what constitutes excessive use depends on the specific state of the network at any given time, excessive use will be determined by resource consumption and not by the use of any particular application. For further information, please refer to Clearwire's Acceptable Use Policy, which may be amended from time to time.

quote:
Unlawful or Improper Use of the Service. You may not use the Service in a manner that is unlawful, harmful to or interferes with use of Clearwire's network or systems, or the network of any other provider, damages, disables, or impairs any Clearwire property, interferes with the use or enjoyment of services received by others, infringes intellectual property rights, results in the publication of threatening or offensive material, or constitutes spam or e-mail abuse, a security risk or a violation of privacy. The Service is intended for reasonable periodic, ordinary active use. You may not use the Service on a standby or inactive basis in order to maintain a connection.

Sounds like the "idle" you connection like VZW, so much for having a server.

There is no reason for VZW to have brought EVDO to the boondocks, why didn't it keep its 3G network urban/suburban like ATT? If ATT can justify it, there is no reason why VZW couldn't have done it.

yeah

Keep deploying to already services areas... That'll bring in the millions

Seriously... People that have either one or no options first perhaps? I know its not 10,000 people, but it could be many untapped resources as opposed to constant advertising and negotiating the people with cable/dsl providers already in place....

I'm saying this within a wimax towers range.... People want internet here in Dickson, TN.. And many have it that are offered the services.. But there are many (( myself included )) that do not have any options except for EVDO. But caps and high prices keeps most out.. Then equipment cost for antenna and amps.... You get where I am going.. Grandma doesn't climb poles as good as she used to to install a yagi for data use...

Re: yeah

I don't know why you're talking about climbing poles and installing a yagi. Last I checked, Clear only offered Mobile WiMax which does not require a fixed antenna.

I have my Xohm (now Clear) desktop and usb modems working pretty good here in the Chicago area and I don't have a need for a fixed/mounted antenna.

In Dallas, an area stifled by the death grip of AT&T and TWC, Clearwire is welcomed.

What happened to Washington DC?

I guess I am going to have to wait for VZW's LTE.
