Despite Charter's efforts to derail project
(old news - 10:27AM Wednesday Nov 08 2006)
tags: Fiber · competition · cable · municipal
Yesterday, Clarksville, Tennessee, voters overwhelmingly approved (72%) the Clarksville Department of Electricity's bid to provide the triple play over a new fiber-optic network, reports the Clarksville Leaf Chronicle. As we'd previously reported, incumbent cable provider Charter had been waging a misleading public relations campaign against the effort.

Once complete, the network will offer users 10Mbps fiber connections and give the utility the ability to read meters and manage the network remotely. Charter is one of the most debt-ridden cable providers in the country and, as a result, has had a hard time with network upgrades. Charter does offer a 10Mbps tier but only in competitive regions. Many Charter users complain they have yet to see the last upgrade (from 3Mbps to 5mbps).

Another Muni story

Not only is the bad Muni doing their own system against Charter, but the Muni also has their own power company that is going to be the provider. Double bad according to some folks here, the people are cutting out TWO different 'private' companies.

Good luck Clarksville, may your net be full of bytes flowing to and fro and the corporate lawyers get lost in New York City.

Re: Another Muni story

Charter, you got what you had coming. Only service as bad as yours could prompt voters to vote overwhelmingly for more government. I've suffered for years with poor quality, unrealiable cable tv and similar internet access with your company. Apparently the rest of Clarksville has too. Prepare for a mass exodus of subscribers.

Re: Another Muni story

Our cable and Internet service work great from Charter. It is the high prices that suck. Hopefully having CDE providing Internet will force Charter to lower their prices for the area. Whenever the CDE Internet becomes available it will not have a direct effect on me since I live in the county (CEMC - enjoy those lower prices), but an indirect effect.

Just have to wait and see what happens.

Re: Another Muni story

I agree with you sir, I never had issues with latency and speeds in the short time I had Charter, but it was the high prices and inability to maintain a flat rate price as advertised.

Anyways, congrats.. I'm jealous.

watch charter do like bellsouth and bog this down in courts. because a corperate wallet has been proven to matter more to the law then the citizens voting.

Another WIN for the citizens

This is what the CITIZENS of the town want. Who cares if charter loses money. The citizens most certainly don't, as is their RIGHT. They made the right choice, when they decided to keep their money local. They made the right choice when they told the megacorp to go screw themselves. They made the right choice in ensuring ALL their citizens have a choice. These are the days, when the fat cat republican scum have to crawl back into their methamphetamine induced gay sex right wing christian fundy scewed up worldview. These are the days when the facist bush regime is going to get what's coming. Celebrate, for we've taken back both the house and senate, and there's a changes in the air!

Looks like MODS are taking the day off celebrating the election and can't spot blatant trolling. Karlmax it seems that everytime I read one of your post I feel like I just lost 10 IQ points. Your constant rant are boderline insane. Newflash this has absolutely nothing to do with Bush or who one the house and senate. Incase you don't know where Tennesse is, it is a red state and DEMs didn't do to hot in that state. You need to get out of MA for a bit or just look at a map.

Re: Another WIN for the citizens

Stupidity usually does. His rant is just wrong based on location of Clarksville,TN. It might make sense if it was some other area. Clarksville is in Montgomery county which is pretty much a 50/50 county in a pretty red state.

Tennessee is not a red state. It was always blue before the Bush 2 era. Three election cycles does not change a color if history is overwhelmingly the opposite.

Re: Another WIN for the citizens

You are correct but the blue of old is not the same blue of today. Tennesse has never been or will ever be a MA type blue. Now my problem is that Mr. Brainiac OP wants to link Bush/House/Senate to Clarksville muni decision and that has nothing to do with that but of course it serves his worldview. Just look at the tags used on this thread. The one tag missing is "POLITICS" they way it should be.

10 Points per post! Wow, so, umm, your IQ has dropped to about 25, right? This has EVERYTHING to do with Bush. Bush and the republican REGIME are so pro megacorp, they were passing laws left and right to prevent the towns from doing what they wanted. The bush REGIME supports the megacorps, not the citizens. That's the fundamental problem. When the govt is no longer for the people, but instead the govt is for the megacorporation, we've all lost. The citizens of Clarksville clearly stated they WANT their town to provide them with options. The citizens of Clarkville clearly stated they WANT to keep the money in the LOCAL economy. And that, of course, is what the fat cat republican scum just can't tolerate. Why, it could lead to *gasp*, a FREE electorate!

Good Job Clarksville!

This is a happy day in Clarksville (just right up the street from me)
My town did the same thing about 4 years ago. We voted for the Power company to offer cable and cable internet.

Matter of fact. I am the Sr IT/Headend Tech. for the Broadband Division.
It has put Charter's feet to the fire.
WE beat them on price, quality and service. We respond to our service calls the same day, not 3 days or 2 weeks, same day.
We have brand new plant that is maintained constantly (noise, sweeps, optimization, etc)

Re: Good Job Clarksville!

What does it cost to get naked cablemodem service and for what level of performance? Feel free to PM me the info if you feel it be more appropriate, but I am curious to know. I certainly do not live in TN (I'm in GA), but I am curious because I'd love for my electrical coop to offer something.

Good to see

Let's all throw some more snow on this snowball and get it rolling faster!
I sure as hell would like to see my city get a kickass Muni fiber service going!

Don't get me wrong, my Comcast connection has been fine, but it's time to shift gears and at least TRY to keep up - if not catch up, ya know?

10/10 fiber is LONG overdue... for everyone!

The Plant is already there

What most people dont know is, Clarksville Power has already had the fiber in place and has been using it to read meters.
They now want to use the same fiber to do internet and TV.

Re: The Plant is already there

The town next to me did the same thing. The town's power company which owns the utility poles, created there own cable tv and internet network. They already had verizon DSL and comcast cable. While the speeds are not any faster, the support is better and they are putting money into the town, and not into big business.

Do tell why they used fiber to read the meters? Most utilities use just a wireless transmitter on pole for that cause its %99 cheaper. lol

Did they anticipate this in the long run or something?

Re: The Plant is already there

Yes they did anticipated it.

Also, I can not find the article that stated they already had some of the fiber in place and it was being used.

I have been told that they were already doing meter reading via the fiber in so areas and needed the bond money to finish the plant and to build the headend, ect.

Even relaying back to a wireless point on the pole they have to have some kind of connectivity to the pole which means running fiber to the pole. Might as well go the extra few feet and run it right to the house, no spectrum licensing issues, no interference from other wireless and more opportunity with video, internet and telephony. Much better than wireless if you ask me.

im not sure I understandnot, I see nothing about them already having fiber in place. I see a statment similiar to yours about reading meters using the fiber, but it says it will be done over fiber when it is built. Do You have a link to a source?

said by »www.theleafchronicle.com/apps/pb···11080349 :
The fiber-optic network will allow CDE to remotely read meters every 15 minutes, allowing them to notice power-outages before customers call in.
