Scientific Atlanta brand goes away....
(old news - 11:52AM Monday Jan 07 2008)
tags: business · hardware · bandwidth · cable · networking
Cisco, who purchased Scientific Atlanta back in 2005 for $6.9 billion, will be ditching the SA logo for their new set tops, and pushing the Cisco brand harder on the consumer front. The company unveiled their new set-top cable boxes (the 8500HDC DVR series), their new channel bonding 100Mbps capable cable modem (the the DPC3000) and their new home gateway (the DRG2800). Says Cisco of the new modem:
Click for full size
The Cisco DOCSIS 3.0 Channel Bonded Cable Modem is designed to meet the CableLabs Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications (DOCSIS) 3.0 specifications, which feature support of four bonded downstream channels and four bonded upstream channels. It is designed to be backward-compatible for use as a single-channel cable modem with DOCSIS and Euro-DOCSIS 1.1/1.0 and 2.0 networks.
While the DPC3000 should be firmware upgradeable to DOCSIS 3.0 compliance, it has not yet been certified by CableLabs, who has yet to certify any DOCSIS 3.0 modems. Cable operators in some countries (just not here) have started deploying channel bonding gear in order to offer customers broadband speeds in excess of 100Mbps. Upstream speeds remain slow for these deployments, given upstream channel bonding is still in the oven.

No thanks!

So now when, as my SA8300HD likes to -take a s*it - my internet will go out?

No thanks....

Don't want all my eggs in one basket...not to mention that my cable box is nowhere near my modem...

Ehhh, no. Read the whole thing, take note of punctuation. They are releasing two(2) products. One is a set top. The other is a modem.

Re: No thanks!

You can't get quite the specs you are hoping for, but if there is a Fry's Electronics near you check out the refurbished units in the white boxes. I have purchased several version 1 WRT54GS's there for $40 each. Much better than the new stuff, unless you crave 802.11 N.

Re: No thanks!

Lots of computers have at least 32GB of RAM.

.. Heck, back in 2003 I had machines with 32GB ..

Motorola already does this.

they just don't take advantage of the built in modem.

BFD Cisco. The only thing you did right was kill Scientific Atlanta and its shitty name recognition.

Cisco=Quality

When most people think of Cisco they associate that with dependability & quality. I really hope that by branding this SA box with the Cisco logo they dont hurt there name brand. I know some folks out there will start yelling "Cisco Sux" but I have had a Pix, and numerous routers that have all lasted me many years without any issues. Not to mention my Linksys router that has been chugging right along for about 5 years now.

Re: Cisco=Quality

I have used a linksys wireless router and regular router for several years as well, however their wireless routers are still some of the worse routers out there.

Re: Cisco=Quality

I haven't had any problems with any of the Linksys WRT54g routers that I have installed. And looking at the forums out there it seems that that line is probably the best consumer grade wireless router out there.

Re: Cisco=Quality

I would greatly disagree being that I used one for years and installed one in numerous people's homes because of my past reliability. Since installing all of those I have swapped out probably 75% of them for all out failure or poor coverage (usually the case).

Linksys does (did?) allow custom firmware which appears to be great and what many people are so happy about. However, I am not into that and don't expect my customers to be so I never dealt with that. Plus why deal with that when I can get a DLink that in my experience clearly has better coverage and requires a lot less power cycles "to fix" it.

Re: Cisco=Quality

I disagree. I've swapped out so many DLink routers and put in Linksys WRT54g routers with and without customer firmwares and all have provided great coverage and none of them have needed a reboot. My own personal WRT54g had an uptime of 2 years until I lost power for a day.

Re: Cisco=Quality

if you ran a UPS unit for your modem and router, your uptime would still be going :P

Re: Cisco=Quality

A 350VA UPS doesn't last over a day with a router and a modem on it. Trust me, I tried. A bigger one probably would, but that size of one really isn't needed for this application. We have more micro-brownouts and blips in the power than anything else. Loosing power for more than 20 seconds is extremely rare.

Don't know what kinda problems you've had, but I've had a Webstar DPX2203 for at least two years. It has worked flawlessly for me...never needs rebooting or anything.

I doubt that it changes much. Since you didn't make it to the second paragraph:

As long as the cable companies dont screw up the modem by pushing THERE crappy firmware on it just like they do with the SA boxes.

Why not linksys?

Linksys is owned by Cisco and they are have a reputable name in the consumer market... or will Cisco end the Linksys branding on their new home networking equipment?

Because cisco is used more in the cable operator arena than linksys is. Plus, the cisco logo makes it more expensive than the linksys logo

will these boxes work on motorola headends?

I would like to see if comcast buys cisco boxes to deploy on motorola headends since they can accomplish more than motorola boxes can. Also will they work on motorola headends or no?

It's the software

The problem with today's DVRs is not the hardware, but the software. The Passport software on my Time Warner Cable 8300HD DVR is the biggest piece of junk I have ever seen. My 1999 ReplayTV is a 1000 times better. On my DVR, you cannot even save the location of a partially watched program - you have to start at the beginning!!!
