Who will join the WiMax bandwagon next?
(old news - 03:00PM Saturday Oct 27 2007)
tags: business · wireless
It was just a few months ago that Cisco began to falter in its position on WiMax technology. Although the company continued to insist that it wouldn’t support WiMax, Cisco began looking into the potential of WiMax gear. Now it looks like Cisco is about to make a $330 million purchase in support of WiMax.

Cisco’s acquisition of Navini Networks comes along with the announcement that Cisco believes WiMax technology will expand telecom coverage and bring connectivity to areas where it is currently not available. Cisco isn’t the only one showing support of the technology. Sprint continues to explore mobile WiMax options, the ITU recently approved WiMax as a global standard for wireless and of course Intel has insisted for years that WiMax is the way to go.

I think when Intel signed on was when Wimax became a sure thing. Cisco joining in is just jumping on the bandwagon. They were worried they were going to be left behind.

I know intel wants to put wimax chips on the motherboard.

Does anyone know if everyone will be able to buy wimax routers or is it just going to be restricted for max profit and controllability?
Like they could just restrict it to oem partners and ISP's with huge payments for license/lease and just sell us recievers.

Re: WiMax

I think it all depends on what frequencies Wimax will operate in.(?)
I doubt ordinary consumers will be able to get the more powerful transmitters though.

Interesting fact about Cisco, They own Scientific Atlanta, the major manufacturer of Cable TV plant equipment.

Imagine a WiMAX node hanging every 100 feet from your local cable TV plant wiring.

A partnership with any cable operator might see WiMax coverage literally pop up overnight, with minimal investment, or waiting for years to get towers approved.

Someone questioned a Sprint /Comcast merger or acquisition before, and that would put WiMax on the map everywhere.

Comcast has the cable plant, and Sprint has gobs of excess spectrum for WiMax deployment.

This could really get interesting.

D-Link WiMAX

D-Link also announced this week that WiMAX retail products are coming to be sold in retail channels like Best Buy.

WiMAX is now truly hitting the mainstream before we can even use it.

WiMAX - is this another ISDN

Re: WiMAX - is this another ISDN

ISDN was quite nice in its time, when the phone company figured out how to install it residentially.

You don't need a base station for WiMAX, just a reciever.

Why not? I can think of a gazillion uses for it right now.
Have all my home wireless appliances accessable from 30 miles.
Video conferences with customers without going through an exchange.
Close to instant communications with friends and relatives.
The whole town where I live is only 15 miles across, so wimax just about covers it double over.

Yes, and my dreams of wimax across the world are dashed ...
Wimax should be just like wireless with more range, the usefullness of this tech is being crushed by greed and security paranoia.

ISDN is still significnetly better technology than whatever else is out there in the United States. The unfortunate problem is that the phone companies saw it as that and got greedy. When they made it too expensive, nobody adpoted it.

If you go to other parts of the world, such as Europe, everybody as ISDN. Hell, even my grandmother had ISDN, with two bonded channels for data 6 years ago. She had no idea what it was, but DT told her that she could be on the phone and internet at once. i think she paid under 50 euros a month for it.

In Europe, you often see DSL over ISDN, with much larger download and upload rates.

Re: WiMAX - is this another ISDN

I had ISDN, you could get 64k, when you bonded the 2 channels for the full 128k.
It took a few weeks to get installed (pacbell engineers had to be talked into(reference cavemen and living in the dark ages) doing the install, they said it was too far(dirty lines)) but once it was working it was great, till they started double billing me and charging outrageous amounts for going over, charged by the minute.
I also remember they wanted to charge me full for the 3 weeks I didnt have any service, including a phone.

Then they killed ISDN by coming out with DSL for 100$ cheaper.

Re: WiMAX - is this another ISDN

Most useless post of the week...

At the time ISDN was out, it was the fastest speed you could get on a residential access... We're talking 10 to 15 years ago here... DSL did not even exist, much less the current FTTH or FTTN projects.

And YES, at the time, it took me weeks to download the 50 floppies it took to install Slackware Linux 0.99pl13.
