Pretty close to Blue-ray, with a few nits to pick...

Over the summer, in competitive response to Verizon's NYC FiOSTV launch, DirecTV announced they'd be offering content in 1080p high definition. Not to be outdone, Dish Network announced that they'd be the first to get 1080p content to market, and began delivering 1080p to customer MPEG-4 HD DVR receivers back in July. Sound and Vision Magazine puts the new, higher definition through its paces and finds that Dish's claim of "Blu-ray Disc quality" 1080p comes pretty close, though Dish's offering is slightly more grainy, and doesn't have quite the same audio punch as its disc counterpart (5.1 versus 7.1-channel DTS-HD Master Audio or Dolby TrueHD).

The real problem

The real problem with Dish's 1080p content is the price. $6.99 rentals are way too pricey. I'll stick to my unlimited DVDs, even though the quality is reduced, through Netflix.

There's also plenty of 720p and 1080i content out there for free in OTA broadcasts or already-paid-for satellite/cable channels.

Yep.... and that mono audio sounds great when you play it on two speakers.

Yeah, mine upscales. Overall it's not too bad. I can't seem to get the resolution right, though.

Good first effort

But it has a way to go. The problem with Blu-Ray is the media is a total rip, rentals being the only viable way of getting Blu-Ray content. But when you're looking at the rip-off prices of DBS 1080P rentals you're better off with Blockbuster or Netflix, despite Netflix's recent addition of a $1.00 "how dare you want Blu-Ray discs" penalty. Blu-Ray still handily wins (unless you don't have a player of course, which are still pricy themselves).

be interesting to see VZ FIOS's comeback to this...

1080p, near blue ray quality..

It would be interesting to see what Verizon's comments on this would be, are they going to match or exceed the quality and offering?

considering that 99.9999% of the population wouldnt be able to tell the difference in a double blind test....i wouldnt do anything except continue to build out the HD VOD and HD channel offerings...

No. They don't even have enough power to show a guide wide screen.

players

Wow, I'm flabbergasted by the still high price of blu ray players. I hadn't checked for a while. I'm lucky because I picked up a PS3 last BF for a good price. The pricing structure for Blu ray dvs's needs to be revisited-why do I pay more to buy or rent a movie that's been mastered on blu ray when there's no extra content? for the difference I'll just let the PS3 upscale a regular dvd for me.

The prices are sub $200 now. i just picked up from Amazon.com the BD-P1500 for $228 with the Blu-Ray Matrix box set free. I was gonna buy the box set anyway, so the player comes out to $150. Not too bad.

Re: Blu-Ray

It doesn't help that the incorrect spelling is in the subtitle.
