I got an email last week saying "Congrats.. we just doubled your speed at no extra charge."
I now get 10 Mbps Down / 2 Mbps Up for $40 + something a month.
BTW: Not everyone up here is poor like a few have insinuated. My profession has taken me out here and there are plenty of huge beautiful homes to choose from. Just like Los Angeles, we too have our bad areas. All cities do.
A lot of celebs have homes out here in foothills of Apple Valley and the surrounding areas.

| And this is the problem with our current system -- those that already have competitive choices (ie FIOS) get yet another high speed alternative and those that are stuck with dialup as the next best alternative will never see upgrades. The large population centers will soon have multiple infrastructures allowing high speed internet access and those in rural areas will be using arcnet over barbwire. | |

| expect it soon! just dont expect it to work at 60 megs... nothing stops a config file from saying 60 megs, i guess it can work for a few minutes on and off.. dont give me the "other side has to support it" crap.
charter hasn't been able to uphold 10 megs on their 20 meg packages since it went from 16 to 20. apparently their FIBER OPTIC is some crazy fiber optic that doesn't work like fiber optics but works like copper! oh yea.

You shouldn't have to pay for poor service! i've called into charter a hundred times by now, when i told them the speeds aren't normal when downloading from a few hops and 10 miles away (which my every other connection maxes) they said that, "sir we offer the fastest service."

| Here's how it works with Charter:
Your service goes down for a week.
You call and call and call and after a half hour on hold you get a robot saying "you must let us try to fix it via robot before you can talk to a human." So you take the 20 minutes to go through that. When that doesn't fix it (as you knew it wouldn't);
They make an appointment to come out and fix the problem they see up on the phone pole - but someone must be home "so we can check it when we're done." Even though they can see (via TDR) exactly where the break is.
Then they don't show up for the appointment. 12 times. I'm not exaggerating here, they broke 12 appointments over the course of a week. They don't show for their 8am-5pm appointment. At 5:05pm I call: "We'll be there in an hour." They never show. I call again. "We'll be there in an hour." They never show. I call again. "We'll be there in an hour." They never show. I call again.
See the pattern?
Then after I call the presidents office (Charter, not Obama) they have the head service guy call. He makes an appointment. Although late, they call. Then they show. Then they fix it. Then they tell you to call for a credit.
So I'm going to sit on hold for 1.5 more hours to get someone who has taken a job from an American and lives in a beautiful, exotic place that I dream of scuba diving in, yet barely speaks English (and I'm a VERY liberal guy) who is going to credit me for a week of downtime. That's $10.
Do you think my time (and the accompanying aggravation) is worth 1.5 hours on hold for $10?
This is probably their best profit center! People who don't want to be tortured for $10. And that's if your serice is down for a week. If it's down for 2 days, you're looking at about a $1.50 credit.
NOW I get anxious as soon as I hear their music on hold. And I've got big gonads. I start getting wound up as soon as I dial their number! It's like a Pavlov thing.
ALTOGETHER NOW: Recite your ABC's - ANYBODY BUT CHARTER!!!!
Problem is, they are THE ONLY provider in my neighborhood. Which means from time to time, they twist my low-hangers and there's nothing I can do about it but cry - by myself.

| Re: expect it soon! said by iansltx :Also sometimes the other end *doesn't* support the speeds you're pulling on a connection more than about 25 Mbps. Heck, some places with poor connectivity can't get above 5 Mbps. It all depends on where you're coming from and where you're going to, plus how you're getting there (multiple connections on Usenet will max out a connection where a single-threaded download from Akamai won't). thank you for your networking lesson.
this is how it works, half of the year, charter's max speeds are fine, the other half of the year.. they have issues.
and the more common, it works at 5 pm then at 6 pm, it's dropped from downloading 2000kb/s to 500kb/s.. i mean come on -- Operation Northwoods "Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious" -Oscar Wilde »www.whatreallyhappened.com/ »tinyurl.com/pxq278 »www.snopes.com/quotes/goering.asp

I'd be rather ticked if I couldn't get advertised speeds with my service. you know truthfully what's more annoying than it not working? they dont admit to it. all they do is claim that they have the fastest network. they'd rather consistently send out techs and waste money that way.
back in the days, seemed like the major congestion or something was coming from qwest, seemed like qwest was throttling charter... -- Operation Northwoods "Patriotism is the virtue of the vicious" -Oscar Wilde »www.whatreallyhappened.com/ »tinyurl.com/pxq278 »www.snopes.com/quotes/goering.asp

| Re: expect it soon! said by iansltx :I'll bet the probem wasn't Qwest throttling Charter so much as Charter not buying enough bandwidth from Qwest. If you're running a cable system off of a T3 and have more than one DOCSIS channel running the T3 is the bottleneck...but I'm betting that isn't the case any more since Charter has now built out their own network a bit. so charter probably had a hundred megs at qwest, full duplex customers trying to use their internet at home, combined usage of 500 megs, that's what happens! | i appreciate your responses, i'm SURE you're getting the speeds right now, you have obviously not been a charter customer as long as me, in a congested area. i've held stock in the company for a long time, it's worth nothing now... the point isn't for me to get people to cancel their service, i'm a dual-wan advanced user, i route networks to and from my uverse/charter, depending on routes..
most of the time, downloads were fine, then it turned into most of the times, downloads weren't fine.. why do you figure i'm lying about this ?

| What ifs... If I wanted to cherry pick data, this is what I would surmise:
A little birdie told me DOCSiS 3 is coming for my area, and 60mb service is right behind it. Charter is rolling out 60mb service where they would have to compete with FiOS. WE HAVE NO FiOS HERE! (see where I'm headed?) Frontier is trying to buy Verizon and that includes my area. Is the deal going to fall through? Does Charter know something? Is Verizon going to upgrade us to FiOS soon? Does Charter know something?
Yeah, it's a crazy plan, but crazier things have happened...

| I will probably try it out. I'm a power-user, everything in our home goes through the internet. Multiple computers, VOIP, game systems, our WDTV media player, Satellite boxes, etcetera. We use the hell out of our service.
In fact when charter first started talking about usage caps, they called me and complained about my high usage (haven't heard back since, however, and that was 9+ months ago)...I told them, "give me a higher option and I'll get on it"....
Might be time for me to pony up and test this service out for a month or two, to see how I like it. If it works as advertised, keep it around for awhile...if not, downgrade.
Then bail to FIOS as soon as they complete the Hesperia rollout here in a few months. There's no way they can compete with FIOS on cost.
