Does a 'free' iPod obliterate a lifetime of poor service?
10:38AM Tuesday Jul 15 2008 by Karl Bode

On the heels of another traditionally dismal showing in yearly consumer satisfaction polls and the NebuAD PR disaster (during which they tried to convince the public that selling user browsing data was as good as offering them faster speeds), Charter has unveiled a new "Live It with Charter" promotion supposedly aimed at getting on their customers' good sides. The new program doles out points to customers who pay more per month for bundled services. Those points can then be traded in for "special perks."

Click for full size
According to the program website, once you sign up you'll get between ten and fifteen "Live It" points for every $1 you spend on your monthly Charter bill. Then once every quarter, Charter will open up their "Charter store," where you can buy everything from "branded clothing and accessories to popular electronics items such as iPods," according to the company.

Now perhaps I'm cynical, but I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that a credit-card rewards style program isn't going to help cure network congestion or fix customer service -- though it may differentiate the company in markets where customers enjoy gimmicks. I can't help but wonder how many "Live it points" were earned by the guy who recently decided to pay $71,540 for a "lifetime" * of Charter broadband service.

Yeah!

I can see this one coming a mile away. 1,500,000 points gets you our nifty Charter coffee mug, plus $25 shipping and handling, or our "I Love and Forgive Charter" t-shirt for 5,000,000 points, plus $30 shipping and handling.

Now for 99,000,000,000, points you'll receive an iPod Shuffle, plus $59.99 shipping and handling.

Any value in this for anyone but Charter?

Whenever I've seen "points" schemes like this in the past, the things the points could be used for were a very limited selection, at questionable prices (also partly obscured by the difficulty of evaluating the points in dollars), and you'd do better shopping around for bargains in regular stores - if you even wanted the same items anyway.

That's all these kinds of things are designed to do (see: Micro$oft Points). They know it, we know it, but most people are too naive.

This reminds me of the 'tickets redemption' in arcades in the 80's. where a $5 transistor radio you'd have to play $1500 worth games[assuming you won the max tickets per game on that game!] to get.

Yet again!!

Yet another company spending money on a useless dog and pony show instead of spending that money they blew on the advertising and not to mention the cost of running the "rewards program" and putting into fixing what is actually not working.

This philosophy big business has of thinking most people are ignorant, don't really think about what type of service they are getting, and at what cost is not going to hold water to much longer.

Re: Yet again!!

Hey, I like rewards programs: the ones that give you cash back or airline discounts or free flights or such. Charter's program? Meh, no. How about spending that 1% or so of your bill on network upgrades or keeping NebuAd away? With fast, reliable service gimmicks are unnecessary.

Says who? You'd get more out of the $12 than anything they'll offer in this program I bet.

Who pays for all of these prizes

Who pays for all of these prizes? YOU DO.

That's right, the next bill increase will cover the cost of these prizes./

but just think: with a higher bill you'll get more points for prizes so charter hikes your bill and with a higher bill you'll get more points for prizes so charter hikes your bill and with a higher bill you'll get more points for prizes so charter hikes your bill and with a higher bill you'll get more points for prizes so charter hikes your bill and with a higher bill you'll get more points for prizes so charter hikes your bill and with a higher bill you'll get more points for prizes so charter hikes your bill and with a higher bill you'll get more points for prizes so charter hikes your bill and with a higher bill you'll get more points for prizes so charter hikes your bill and with a higher bill you'll get more points for prizes so charter hikes your bill. . . . .

gimmicks work for Uverse, why not for Charter?

I've been receiving mailings for the AT&T's partial-birth abortion Uverse product, and the one thing that is clear is that your package comes with $100 - $200 cash back. What isn't clear is the monthly price after all the promo's have come through. BUT $100 cash back! yes!!!!!!

People love gimmicks. Especially dumb people.

This Is Frontpage News Now?

This isn't new... I've been with this program for over a year now. It's not fantastic offers inside by any stretch of the imagination. Alot of the stuff is gift merchandise they get from Showtime, HBO etc. Anything thats of substantial value requires so many points you'll never see it.

They are rolling out through out the rest of charter now, you are in the eastern division, where the program was "tested"

This is what you get

When you have an infrastructure that stretches for miles and costs millions of dollars to maintain and your stock is in the tank, this is what you get. When you only have one choice of broadband in the area and even people who are fed up with Charter continue to buy the service, this is what you get.

Charter puts their marketing foot forward for this new rewards gimmick. If there is anything I have learned in this down economy, these gimmicks work. People will stand in line for 20 minutes for .05 cents less per gallon of gas. Freebies pull customers in easy. Sure, their customer service is in the toilet. However, this marketing ploy is cheap and will bring people in thats for sure.

Think I should be giving the common consumer more credit? If yes, then I would like to know what you are drinking.

Signed up

So I signed up. Based on my spending I should qualify for the Platinum membership which gives you 15 points per dollar spent (excluding taxes). I should pull in about 2500 points per month. I go to the rewards page and look at the offerings they have. For 16000 points I could get a component video cable (similar to the one that I was given with my DVR). So in about 7 months I should have enough to get that.

I have a feeling that the real rewards (iPods, etc.) will be so many points that even if you spend a lot per month it will take you several years to get them. By that time they will probably discontinue the program. Looks like another Charter scam to me.

Laughable

Will the Charter Mall give me access to High Def and DVR's which Charter doesn't provide here in my local.

They could take the money they are using for this crap and provide me the services that most others take for granted. I am on year 4 since I bought my HDTV having been told numerous times over the years that it will be coming soon...yeah, right after they set up this worthless points scheme.

Screw up the prizes anyway!

You know that Charter will still somehow screw with the customer that actually redeems their points for whatever, such as the last gimmick they tried with the monster tv!

The bias of this website is so apparent. Gimmick? Who cares??

And for the record, the money raided for the "lifetime" of broadband was donated to charity. But I'm sure you knew that right?
