The most I can get from my local is 10Mbps:D/1Mbps:U and most of the time, even though I'm paying for it and that is the highest tier where I am, that cannot even be achieved with all sorts of tweaking and hacks even. And this is Southern California, not very far away from the megaopolis called "Los Angeles". Ever heard of it? :P

| Not Buying It I speak firsthand as a former cable engineer about this. What a desperate and pathetic attempt to lure customers away from FiOS! 20Mbps may be a reality in Charter's head ends but not in your home. Account for download caps and existing distribution plant that's a generation old or older and coaxial loss to the home for starters. For the challenge of delivering 10Mbps already, what good would doubling the bandwidth do anyway except that it looks good in advertising.
Face it guys, the glory days of analog are over.

| Re: Not Buying It DOCSIS is digital, true. The analog reference is in regards to the era of initial distribution system construction which asserts the limitation. Other than complete system reconstruction and dependence on a fiber transportation back-bone there's not much more to play with.
Kudos to your exceptional connection. Let's hope that remains.
I'm curious are you within a major population density area?

I would like more upload but I don't mind the download. if they give you more, it will bring their network down. will be crawling like a snail... it would bring their entire network to their feet... so its not their priority to have fast upload but to have faster download only. to hide the fact that their is limited upload capacity.
Like more user they love to brag about how much they can download while completely ignoring how fast they can upload even 100/2 will put a smile on most user... including you
why symmetric not possible? its shared you and many other user are on 30/30 pipeline at least 10 people are sharing 30/30, so it isn't obvious until most of you use it at same time then you see a drastic fluctuation... aint that the beauty of shared network? enjoy sharing bandwidth with many others in your neighborhood.

| coax can compete with fiber
if you push coax to its limits it can support quite a bit a 3 gigherts plant combined with switch digital video and mpeg4 and docsis 3 could easely support
100 megabit internet upload and download both and support around 1000 hd channels plus have a lot more bandwidth left to use

| Re: Not Buying It Correction: Coax neighborhood distribution can compete with fiber, for now. Without fiber feeds to the neighborhoods, however, cable would still be stuck in the 80's. At some point the limitations of analog RF distribution (which is what "digital cable" rides on) will become unmanageable and the entire plant will have to be converted to true wideband operation without having it carved into 6 MHz channels. 3 GHz over coax is not trivial and unlikely. 100 megabit upload at the customer is a pipe dream without fiber. | |

Last I heard nobody has been able to make upstream channel bonding work in a real environment.
I suspect that MPEG-4 (really X.264) may be more about increasing the HD quality(reducing the noticeable compression effects) without using any more bandwidth, rather than decreasing the (total) video bandwidth(same amount of bandwidth used, just at much higher quality picture).

It's silly for you to profoundly dictate that none of us are receiving this throughput on our connection when A) we are and B) you would have no way to know that anyway I've never understood the "my brand is better" stuff that goes on. Actually I'm right near a college with 40,000 students and my 20MB is fine.
When you were "speaking firsthand as a former cable engineer" about this, I think you forgot to mention you may have been removed from the scene for at least 10 years and obviously are uninformed on the new technologies. When you said "Face it guys, the glory days of analog are over" ...analog? ...analog? ... the cable companies ditched analog 2-3 years ago. I have a cousin in St Louis who gets their 60MB service ...yes, 60MB in the suburbs of St Louis.
And you theory that cable uses only coax is off a bit too, in fact, cable companies to to have more fiber in the ground than the bells when it comes to rural deployment. In fact most cable ISP have local backbone that can carry anywhere for 40 - 100GB. The only coax is typically last mile. Why do you think Verizon is shelling out billions to play catch up?
You really should do some catch up in DOC 3.0, you may just piss yourself if you grasp what they can do with it. Your a self proclaimed "webjock" so I'm sure you'll be able to find the literature. You can start at cisco.com.

At any point if you have multiple internet connected devices in your home it's not so much about being able to download at 20 Mbps. It's about not having to do it at 1 Mbps because you have 5-6 devices all going at the same time.

If the CSR guys can't help, how can the forum guys help? Any time that I have asked for help, which has only been a couple of times, has been done via IMs, most recently with umattertocharter.

Sorry to say, but your well known as a Charter basher, have been for years, so we all expect this type of behavior from you. Yes, I'm a Charter basher, I admit it, but Charter (specifically the Fort Worth office) deserve every bit of it. I've had some good service, but it's usually short-lived - 3-4 months tops, then something happens and it takes FOREVER to get it fixed and it typically takes a letter to the CEO to get anything done because the CSRs are worthless when it comes to speed and capacity problems. If you want "proof" of bad service -- I can send you 2-3 years worth of speed test data, which only provides a part of the picture, but unfortunately that's really all I have since I don't keep traceroute/ping data.
The last thing Charter needs is their employees coming on the forum and bad-mouthing customers, if, in fact you are a Charter employee.

Actually I've had my issues with CSRs too, trust me, and no, I'm not an employee, but thanks for trying to put the attention on me. And who's bashing again? I'm just pointing out the obvious which even you admit is true. lol. So how is your service? And if you are basing "service" as a speed test, I got some bad news for you. Speed test servers are just a gauge, they don't mean much in terms of proof, so you'll need more than 2-3 years of speed tests run to speakeasy servers. I use to be same as you. Had a few bad customer service experiences then started nit picking my connection. Then I just educated myself and my blood pressure is much lower now.

| Re: So What.... said by gunits :
So how is your service? Right now, it's in the $hitter. Just found out that Charter has known about an "outage" for 5 days and have done nothing about it. So, not only are the speeds slow, but things are latent besides.
Why do I "bash"? Well, some of us like to get the service we're paying for. How, other than a speed test, do you "gauge" speed to determine if the service provider comes close to their "up to 16M" claims? Is that the only measure of the service? Absolutely not. No, there's the periodic long, lingering outages which Charter does nothing to communicate to their customers that the may experience some problems.
Going back a few years, a tech came out on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving to disconnect my neighbor's service -- instead he disconnected mine. The problem comes in when I call Charter to let them know their mistake and they refuse to reconnect me until AFTER the weekend. Yes, it was an honest mistake and could've happened to anybody, but they did absolutely nothing to fix it -- however, I was well compensated for it afterward, but that only lessens the sting. I would much prefer to get the service I'm paying for than have to go through the hassle of fighting for credits when they screw up.
Then there's CATV. High def is good unless it's garbled and pixelated for a week or more at a time or blocks of stations are out completely. Maybe it's not entirely Charter's fault, but guess what, I'm paying Charter. They need to make sure THEIR providers are providing the service that THEY are paying for.

My personal experience with the 20/2 Mbit service has been adequate....I have noticed even when testing to various Charter speedtests...the results seem to be a little inconsistent....but in retrospect my actual results came in close to the original 16M service, which i actually pay for so, as they say you don't get something for nothing
