Since the @Home switc-IE 6.0 Not Recognized-SC

I have basically exhaused my options. Any and all advice welcome. Location: Greenville SC, Facts:

Running xp home ver. 2002 -
Sygate -
Started with the @Home side late last year-
Run NAV 2002 w/ updated def-

Everything was going well......at about the time I went to Charter at the forced switch, I was given the CD to load the new software. I did so with unfavorable results. Since then IE is not recognized as 6.0, but as mozilla 2.0 -
This occurs with sygate disabled - even with a reinstall of xp. Install was not clean, due to time constraints. If forced, I will have no choice to do a clean install, and if so, forget loading the software again. When I try to go to the win update page I get the following:

"The latest version of Windows Update is only available on computers that are running Microsoft Windows 2000 or Windows XP."

I cannot help but to suspect the software that was loaded then. This was when I noticed the branded browser in the IE logo section (top right). Something has effected the user agent key - my assumption. I know that there were a lot of reported issues then with the software from Charter.

Has anyone had this or similar problems?

Thank you very much.
