Company e-mails customers about new 'Max' tier...

Charter has been testing a 16Mbps/2Mbps tier in Texas since last year, and while the company has been vague with us about precise release dates, Charter phone techs have spent much of the last year telling our users that the faster speed would be arriving any day now. Charter is now circulating an e-mail to customers that at least acknowledges the 16Mbps "Max" tier exists, and that it's coming "later this year":
This year we have added more high definition programming including Discovery Channel HD™, the Weather Channel HD™ and Versus/Golf HD™. This is only the beginning. We will launch additional high definition channels this year. Our customers told us they want more Internet speed and we have listened. We will debut Charter High-Speed® Internet Max with download speeds up to16Mbps later this year. Charter is the only place for the most Video On Demand content, including HD On Demand!
While this may change, we've learned that the tier should cost users $69.99 per month if bundled with basic TV, and $79.99 without TV. While last November was supposed to be the original launch date, we're now hearing that the broadest launch should occur in April. Given Charter's limited finances, this tier will only be deployed in select location where competition warrants.

What you expect Charter to *do* something?

**DING DING DING - WE HAVE A WINNER!**
"Given Charter's limited finances, this tier will only be deployed in select location where competition warrants."

I have Charter and the plant around here was upgraded a while back. I have no doubts the infrastructure here can handle 16mbit, however I'm *not* holding out hope for the upgrade any time soon because there is simply no competition in this area besides Verizon DSL (Fios is still a loooong ways away) and Charter's current 10mbit is in reality pretty good.

I guess this is my biggest gripe: Announced upgrades never get to us outside the "top 15" markets or whatever, we're always in last place, bottom of the barrel...

Im not stating that. Im saying that im sure Charter made their decision on offering theses speeds to keep up with competition.

Of course it's because of competition. But if the customers aren't asking for bigger throughputs, then competition would be irrelevant assuming other variable are equal.

Re: What you expect Charter to *do* something?

Not necessarily always true. These companies are out to make money as you know. What better way is there to make more money? that's right, OFFER MORE. That little email that Charter sent out is only a way to fluff up the customers to lead them to believe that charter cares about what the customer says.

Much of these announcements are little more than a dick waving contest for the benefit of Wall Street. Customer wants are usually at the bottom of the priority list.

Wall Street cares about profit margins and the bottom line, they don't care about 16 Mbps vs 10 Mbps...unless it translates to new and/or retained subscribers.

There are several examples of companies with no profits and negative bottom lines which Wall Street absolutely wet themselves over. Hype drives the market, not necessarily results.

Weather Channel HD

Does this seem like a complete waste of HD bandwidth to anyone else?

Hurray, now my local RADAR and its green blobs are in HD!

Your local radar AIN'T gonna be in HD anyway - it's ONLY the national feed that's in HD.

I don't even have the weather channel HD. Where the hell did they deploy that? And the Discovery channel. I would love to have that one. Where is it? I don't have them.

I've got it.

Not even their actual weather reports are in HD! All you get in HD is the national background feed for "your local forecast" and some of their series like Storm Stories and such crap.

Remember when The Weather Channel used to show weather?

competition

There is no real competition here and i have the 16/2 package. All we have is att dsl and even uverse is still a long time off, so the statement about it only being in places with competition (aka fios) isnt true. The sales guy said i would get 16/2 and phone for $85 a month, but im not sure on the cost of each one. I suppose we will see the details when i get my first bill.

Hmm, HD not accurate either

I don't get the Weather Channel or Versus/Golf in HD in my area. What channels are those?

And yes, Charter sucks. I wish Time Warner would buy them out.

why not announce an exact date?

I'm trying to figure out why Charter isn't willing to be more specific on exact launch dates for this new max service? Telling us it'll be here for over one complete quarter, then telling us it'll be here later this year? Almost makes me wonder if this 16/2 service really exists. I know this area is probably ready to roll now, based on the fact I'm able to max my line out no matter what time of day or night it is, which I couldn't do just a few months ago.
That said, what's the hold up? Just how hard is it to add a new tier to the system?I don't even think the 10/1 launch was this vague.

@charter.com

What a JOKE!!!

Charter is blowing smoke again trying to keep customers from jumping ship. I still only have 3 meg internet, no phone and we just got 10 HD channels in November (Plus the local channels that you can get free with an antenna anyway). They've been telling me since October that they are out of bandwidth in my area so that's why we are still at 3meg. I went to the local office last week and asked about the 5meg service and was told that we should get it in 2 weeks, they were waiting on finalizing more bandwidth for the area. I also asked about telephone since the customer service center kept telling me we would have it by February 2008. The local office said maybe a year or two!! I asked about 10meg service when we get 5 and she laughed at me, saying that they are just getting more bandwidth now so they can go to 5meg, so she didn't see 10 or higher any time soon. JOKE JOKE JOKE, as soon as one of the competitors in my town come down my street I'm dumping these lame slowpoke liars.

Charter is irrelevant...

Doesn't matter -- Charter can't deliver 5M/512 service why would anyone think they can deliver 16/2? Yes I have it and NO they cannot deliver anywhere close to 16M down.

Charter

Shouldn't charter be working on getting people acceptable service before worrying about competing with fios?

Charter a joke

Is this new? Charter is known to be the bottom of the bin. I mean who the hell thinks up a 512kb increase back in 03? Charter is run by dead wood idiots. The best is when CBN reps have no idea what fiber is????? They are a joke in the industry.

Charter will silently die and no one will give a crap. Lackluster in everything they have done since coming into the fray. I have to admit though, the rare few who staunchly support them, gives me shivers to think what they would do if they had a real company to support.

'Later this year'....that exactly describes Charter, from top to bottom. Lol what a sad joke.
