As telcos gear up to offer IPTV
(old news - 02:16PM Sunday Jun 18 2006)
tags: legal · TVIP
The San Jose Mercury News has more on the millions being spent to lobby California State lawmakers, who are considering giving telcos a statewide video franchise. "I haven't seen this level of lobbying in the Capitol since fallout from the electricity crisis,'' says Jamie Court, president of the Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights, which opposes AB 2987. Several states, including Texas and New Jersey, have already passed similar laws.

Redefinition

Just when will "lobbying" of this nature be told for what it is? Bribery.

Re: Redefinition

It seems to be harmless here in TX so far. Heck, maybe it'll allow real FTTP for us SBC have-nots.

Re: Redefinition

They've put out a whole lot of those fiber cabinets (~1 per track) in Santa Clarita. I expect to see something in the not too distant future.

Well...

A lot of people fail to realized that these statewide franchises aren't for the telcos only. The cable companies can also do this once their existing deals expires, making things easier for them as well.

The reason that the cable companies don't want this to happen is because they have already entrenched themselves into exclusive deals with many communities, and don't want to make it any easier for the telcos (or anyone else, for that matter) to get into the business and provide serious competition.

That would be nice. Todays telecom rules are mess. cable and telcos will soon all be offering triple play services, so I agree they should play by the same rules.

One of the best things the telcos have done is to convince folks that the cable companies can have 'exclusive' deals for service, which is simply NOT TRUE.

From federal law:
"A franchising authority may award, in accordance with the provisions of this subchapter, 1 or more franchises within its jurisdiction; except that a franchising authority may not grant an exclusive franchise and may not unreasonably refuse to award an additional competitive franchise."
