Large chunks of Long Island go live...

tags: business · wireless · hardware · Cablevision
Cablevision has reached out to us to note that their effort to provide free Wi-Fi to all of their broadband subscribers is moving along. According to the company, they've activated wireless service across a massive swath of Long Island. The project was announced last May, will take roughly two years to complete, and will cost Cablevision about $100 per customer (Cablevision has 3.1 million cable customers, 2.4 million of whom have broadband). The service offers symmetrical 1.5Mbps speeds, according to Cablevision.

Click for full size
The move helps Cablevision differentiate themselves from FiOS across their footprint. You might recall that Verizon once offered free Wi-Fi in Manhattan, but scrapped the project back in 2005 because they feared it cannibalized the sale of their (then) $80 EVDO service. Cablevision COO Tom Rutledge has stated that Wi-Fi and Cablevision's planned DOCSIS 3.0 deployment combined will cost roughly about $315 million.

"This is the first update on our deployment and we're announcing that we've activated service in the commercial and high-traffic areas of Nassau County, parts of Suffolk and on the LIRR commuter rail platforms and station parking lots across Long Island," Cablevision spokesman Jim Maiella tells me. "This is already the largest consumer WiFi deployment in the country, with many more progress reports and updates to come over the next two years."

According to users in Cablevision markets, the company is deploying BelAir 100S Strand Mounted Wireless Multi-service Nodes and Cisco Aironet 1500 Series mesh access points on utility poles. While Cablevision is focusing first on high-traffic areas of Long Island first, Maiella tells me users in Cablevision counties north of the city should also be seeing service before long. The company says they've also launched a new website to map Wi-Fi progress.

When Free means Fee!

If Cablevision's Wi-Fi was truly free you would not have to be a Cablevision Broadband Subscriber to use their Wi-Fi Network. In this case you have to be paying for a Broadband Connection in order to use their Wi-Fi Network. Therefore there Wi-Fi Service is not free!

OOL is overpriced to begin with. This service is not free, it's expensive.

How is it overpriced. It is cheaper than Fios and cheaper than most other services across the country.

My DSL is $32 per month. FiOS is $43 per month. OOL is $45 per month.

Re: When Free means Fee!

Your DSL is slow. FiOS is 10/2 with a contract. OOL is $45 with no contract. They cost the same as any other cable company, $45 for regular internet, $60 for faster speed. Regular speed is 15/2, faser is 30+/5. I'm paying $63 + modem rental for a Comcast connection that isn't even as fast as the lower-end Cablevision tier. Seriously, they're overpriced? THey provide more for your money!

I for one think doing a muni WiFi network for customers of your service is a fine idea, and 1.5 Mbit symmetric service wherever is enough to get most things done. Most AT&T/T-Mobile hotspots don't get up to that speed. Basically the premise is this: with FiOS you get internet to one location. Sure it's wicked fast but it's also a little on the expensive side and once you get out of your own WiFi coverage you're gone. ith CableVision you can move into an "extended service area" where you still have internet, without having to buy any extra equipment. Sounds like a win to me.

Whether CV is faster or has free included WiFi is irrelevant to me, as I can't afford $540 per year for their service.

I don't want faster, I want cheaper.

Then your DSL should suit you well. It's cheap but it's not fast. Problem is, DSL around here is neither cheap nor fast...starts at $40/month for a 1.5 connection!

It does. $32/month for 3 Mbps / 768 kbps. That's fast enough. I can download a movie in a little over a half hour. I have no need for anything faster.

Re: When Free means Fee!

In which case I applaud your thrift. I like watching movies streamed from my own router-attached hard disk, or maybe backing stuff up online, or downloading large MP3 albums (for the college radio station I work at). So basically I take all the speed I can get, as long as the rice is below, oh, $70 a month. I also use VoIP over the connection, and the savings of VoIP alone pays for some of that conection cost.

DSL Optimum online

Optimum online is 15/2 which beats 10/2. The difference is 2 dollars in price. When you are talking about bundling discounts it is cheaper for most people since they usually want cable TV service and voip. I don't recall people getting a bundling discount with Verizon if they chose voip over POTS. FIOS definately wins out in the higher speed tiers though.

They can make it an additional fee in addition to your OOL fee if you want.

It's not "free". It's "included". There's a difference.

Re: When Free means Fee!

It is a free addition to the existing schedule/properties of the service.

Or, bandying the semantics a different way - it's a free addition to the service, or is "now included at no extra charge". Spin it any way you want. From a marketing perspective it's free.

I fail to see your point? They are adding Wi-Fi for THEIR customers at no extra cost. That = free to me.

I made the comment because of the title of the article: Cablevision Lights Up Free Wi-Fi
A more accurate title would be "Cablevision lights up Wi-Fi access to subscribers at no charge."

Very nice

This is a very nice perk. You don't see AT&T or Verizon offering free EVDO/HSPDA, nor WiFi. (And Starbucks doesn't count AT&T fanpeeps)

Cablevision's 'service' isn't decent service anyway, so why would OOL WiFi be a nice 'perk'?

They have one of the highest rating here on BBr.

Almost as high as FiOS, higher than Verizon DSL, AT&T, Comcast, and Road Runner.

To some here, anything that isn't free and at least 100 mbps internet and all TV channels in HD is a ripoff. And no amount of additional perks will change their opinion. They want to live in a socialist nirvana that exists only in the writings of Sci-Fi writers and StarTrek fans.

I resent that comment. Socialism = Good! But either way, I agree - there are some who will be never satisfied.

Looks like a decent addon, like the WiFi that Bell offers here at my local Starbucks. The sad part is, while OOL > WiFi, Bell Starbucks Wifi > 1Mbps DSL.

OOL is fine, I've been very happy with it for 10 years. better than my corporate connection.

How is 15/2 service with no caps. or $60 service 30/5(that allows web and email servers) not decent. Even fios does not allow you to unblock web and email ports.

Cablevision is prob in the top 5 behind fios and the small ftth companies.

Its prob one of if not the best cable company.

Yep. Its speeds are a shockingly fast compared to Comcast and TW. Don't compare CV speeds to Comcast PowerBoost speeds.

Its better then comcast and time warner . Id rather have the sometimes speed problems with cablevision then constantly getting overbilled with fios and them not fixing it for months.

Been Waiting

My area got the WiFi nodes back around July 4th. Near my office in Babylon the nodes have been working and I was able to log in and utilize the service long before it was "officially" launched. It is nice to see the maps now showing where the service is available. There are a few spots around my area I was not aware of.

great perk

This is a great perk for cablevision customers. Cablevision nows as of right now they cant compete speed wise with fios (until docsis 3) so they are doing other things to compete.

Now in their area its fios with better speed and tv clarity or cablevision with slightly lower speeds and tv clarity but free wifi for their customers in their area.

As of right now id rather have the free wifi. It rocks being able to access the net with my ipod touch anywhere i go for free.

familiar isp;

In just about any area across the country.. you can sample service from just about any isp.. through the universal provider... LINKSYS! Not that I necessarily advocate using someone's unlocked, un-passworded, un-encrypted wifi router.. but it is out there for the taking. So, you can sample both FIOS & OOL by wifi remote control so to speak.

"Free" Wi-Fi to it's subscribers?

That is as contradictory as 'military intelligence'.

If you have to subscribe to Cablevision in order to get Wi-Fi, it is NOT free. The author of that article is a moron.
