tags: business · cable · Cablevision
Cablevision drops us a line to note the operator is adding four channels to their high definition TV lineup; a press release should be dropping later today announcing the addition of USA, SCI FI, CNBC and Bravo. "This takes us to 68 HD channels available to our iO TV digital cable customers, without any additional equipment or "extreme" programming fees," spokesman Jim Maiella tells us. Some filings indicate that Golf HD is also on the way.

everything HD

By 2009, all cable channels should broadcast an HD signal.. whether or not the source ever was HD.. it's the new digital standard.. Eventually all the old sourced media will upconvert to HD signal and that will be that.. saying that 4 new channels went HD is like saying DSL now qualifies in 5% more of telco land... let us know when real progress like FTTP takes place!

I think you mean Digital signal not HD. Analog OTA will be gone by Feb 19th. FIOS no longer has Analog and the Cable Comp. will be getting rid of Analog to make room for digital..shortly there after

We can thank local city councils that require cable co's to maintain a limited basic without a box....if that bandwidth could be added to current cable lineups, they would dominate the HD scene

The analog broadcast is moot. I'm talking about the entire cable industry converting to 480i minimum HD standard *with a majority being 720p - 1080p*! No analog to digital broadcast. This means HD boxes and subscriptions that don't cost a penny extra in service fees or set-top rentals. Of course you can down-convert to analog if you happen to have one of those legacy tv/monitors.

Hi,
Understand. I still think that Fios and possibly OOL may not have a capacity problem, TW and the reat seem to. They now have the channels "Parked" before they hit consumers STB. It seems to clear up some bandwith for them. I believe FTTH/P is the cure.

After the $ Billions $ they've been raking in, they need to make an investment in the future.. and the opportunity to do so will never get better... in a poor economy, this is the time to double down, as investments made under favorable interest rates and superior ability to use non-unionized labor through 3rd party contract work has never been better.. Its time to go 100% HD-- Now, before broadband really makes CATV obsolete, or worse, irrelevant to people's lives. Telco now realizes that they pissed around with DSL wasting millions and AT&T will be at a competitive disadvantage in some markets in the future because of easy access to docsis 3. Verizon has the technology part of internet FIOS mostly right, but have poor implementation on just about everything else..

Not implementing Docsis 3 leaves a capacity problem.. not that the current coax is inadequate.. it's upto spec for the most part... it's the head-end tech and last mile cmts that need the upgrades. Some nodes will need to be split as they take share away from AT&T's vdsl service.

"Extreme" reference

funny to see the "extreme" reference to Verizon FiOS TV. While it is a higher priced tier that includes more than 100 HD channels it's actually cheaper than cablevision's iO TV. referring the the sites below we see that Cablevision's Family cable + iO service is $63.90/ month to get those 68 HD channels whereas Verizon's Extreme HD package is $57.99 /month for more than 100 HD. Which is the better value? I realize this is not bundle pricing and doesn't include set top box's.

Re: "Extreme" reference

From the chart it looks like Verizon has the best line up. I’ve only used Comcast, DIRECTV & Dish. Out of the 3 that I’ve had DIRECTV has the better line up. Unfortunately I live in Qwest territory so Fios will probably never be available.

My inlaws have Fios...Verizon also charges more for an HD STB vs SD STB($10 vs $5 I believe) and $20 for each DVR STB. So just one HD box makes the price even, and the more HD boxes...the greater Fios costs compared to Cablevision. I will grant you Fios has a better HD lineup, but cost wise it is not a "better value". It's more channels for more money.

It all depends on what you want. I have the movie pack with FiOS, which gives me Starz, Encore, Showtime, TMC, IFC and Sundance, including all VOD for those packages - grand total $14/month (I think that's the going price - but it's right around there). How much would it cost me to get the same thing with CV? Per their price list:

Showtime - $10.95/month
TMC - $10.95/month
Starz/Encore - $10.95/month

And that doesn't include the VOD offerings for those! Which run an extra $4.95/month EACH. Also, for some reason, they treat Disney VOD as a premium VOD service? I'd have to pay $4.95/month for Disney VOD??!?

Edit - and their DVR isn't $20/month. It's $16/month. The home media version of the DVR (aka the multi-room DVR) is $20/month.

I've gotten into these discussions before. At the end of the day, the pricing isn't all that different between providers. They're all just structured differently. Pricing from one provider may be better for you than another because that provider's pricing structure may be better for your particular needs. Let me illustrate using the example that you posted - dish companies give you the first receiver free!

Really? DirecTV HD Extra TV Service = $67.98/month. Verizon FiOS Extreme HD package = $57.99/month.

Wow you only get to pay an extra $10/month to get that 'free' receiver. It's not free. You still pay for it. The only difference is that they don't break it out as a separate charge.

As for the only $5/month thing... again, you have to compare things correctly. If I'm a DirecTV subscriber and I want to add an HD DVR, how much does it cost up front? Answer (per the latest figures I've seen): $200... right up front. If I'm a FiOS customer and I want to add an HD DVR how much does it cost me right up front? Answer: Nothing. So, you get to pay $200 up front to reduce your monthly fee.

Also, every time you add a receiver with DirecTV you get to extend your contract. It doesn't actually reduce your service fee to do that - you're basically locking yourself in so you can get a reduced monthly charge on your new set top box, that's all. With Verizon (and other cable services) contracts aren't tied to the equipment, but to the service. So I get a discount on my service if I sign a contract.

Again, apples to apples, at the end of the day pricing is pretty equivalent between providers, for a normal/standard configuration. Get into add-ons and different providers become better or worse for you depending on your particular configuration.

Re: "Extreme" reference

That is why the equipment really makes the difference. I gladly paid the $200 for the HD DVR from D*Tv. I have used both Cablevision's and FIOS' DVR and it not as good as D*Tv's. The GUI on both were either too plain or way to busy. The streaming capability that D*Tv has is a really good step in the right direction.

I would save about $16 on my monthly bill if I switch to FIOS. I have seriously considered switching but I currently happy with D*Tv.

I will never use Cablevision again. Their quality of HD is not that great.

Look, there was much to like with DirecTV's equipment (they have some nice functionality that I wish Verizon would add), but overall the reliability of my two R15s was horrible. Every new s/w release introduced more bugs than the previous one. There were limits on those boxes that drove me insane - no more than 50 series, no more than 100 items on your to do list, and you couldn't set up the same series on more than one channel at a time. And I would have killed for a series manager on that thing - how you build a DVR that DOESN'T have that is just beyond me.

The older s/w on the FiOS equipment was pretty plain. It worked well, but it was very bare bones. Their newer s/w - their IMG - is slick as hell. Very fast (on most things), very easy to use, and they're constantly updating it. Yeah they introduce bugs from time to time, but overall I have to say, as a long-time s/w developer myself, considering the size and complexity of what they're delivering, these s/w releases are amazingly bug-free.

To each his own. I was a very happy DirecTV customer for 5 years, but when I wanted to upgrade to HD, and they wanted $300 up front for their HD DVR - just to have the honor of extending my contract by another 2 years - I went looking elsewhere. It still sticks in my craw that I had to spend $100 up front to lease that first R15.

fios is 5.99 per hd box here in nnj plus cv allways charged me 9.95 for dvr service plus 5.99 for the box so its the same cost as fios hddvr 15.99 i just did a cv vs fios price/cost check and the cv rep quoted me a $30 increase over my fios bill for the EXACT same triple play package plus the same channels , boxes , on demand , movie channels etc.

I had FiOS installed on the 21st of November. Picture quality flat-out decimates anything offered by Time Warner, my previous provider (in both SD and HD). That alone, to me anyways, justifies Verizon's pricing.

comcast...

is starting to look like a joke now with their lack of HD feeds for national networks... the whole "we have more HD" is just a stupid marketing ploy to make VOD look like they have more HD in the linear sense to people who don't understand the concept of VOD != linear channels

Dedicated channels or SDV?

as a cablevision tv subscriber with a tivo HD and two s-cards (m-cards not available here) I wonder if these new HD channels will be Switched Digital Video or regular channels. I already lose many HD channels due to this but these channels I am more interested in than the Voom crap I lost several months ago.
