Oh Yeah? We have a gazillion HD channels coming....

Thanks to all the users who alerted us that Cablevision is joining the HD promise parade by insisting that by the end of the year they'll have the "capacity" to offer some 500 HD channels. First, though, they'll be adding 15 new HD channels from Voom HD starting July 1 (according to the press release), bringing their total HD channel lineup to 40. Only 460 thus far non-existent HD channels left to offer!

The HD verbal warfare has gotten silly of late, with Comcast promising that the company has 800 HD channels coming, and DirecTV saying they'll have 150 HD channels by year's end. Of course, both are counting individual VOD streams or NFL Sunday ticket games as a "channel," so much of the chatter at this point is more marketing than delivery.

There aren't a gazillion HD channels to be had

There is no point in talking about 150-500HD channels but there simply aren't that many HD channels out there.

Seriously.

Once you've gotten your fill of Law and Order episodes, your HD content menu declines dramatically.

True, but thus far, cable companies and satellite providers have been fairly unwilling to pick up new HD stations due to capacity issues. If this "verbal warfare" makes them more eager to add HD stations, I see it as a good thing. It's always nice when competitive pressure raises the bar.

Re: Yawn...

I agree I thought I would having the game channel in HD but good lord they are still covering the pre next gen content for the game consoles. I swear they stopped making new content for that channel oh let's see about 2 years ago. But all in all I enjoy voom for battlestar galactica in HD and food network HD and a little discovery channel. Other than that i give it a big ole MEHHHHHH :P

Marketing nonsense...

"The HD verbal warfare has gotten silly of late,"

Marketing, be it Sat. Cable, or Telco it's just that, Marketing.
The folks here on BBR are sharp and are not fooled.
The general public... well that's who marketers are looking to fool.

500 channels?.. Ya right !

GOOD!

I want:

-Discovery HD (one that mirrors the regular discovery channel, a-la fox/fox HD - the DHD currently does not have any programs i routinely watch)

-History Channel HD (null said)

-A&E

-Anything else your going to give me...

I'm not going to pay extra for it...so any extra HD channels are a plus!

Re: GOOD!

We have Discovery HD, it's channel 727 (at least in NJ). It's been there since March. I watched all of Planet Earth in HD.

Re: GOOD!

I said I wanted a discovery HD that MIRRORS the regular discovery channel (IE: theres no mythbusters on discovery HD), a-la fox and fox HD - same programs playing same timeslots.

OTA still wins

There's only a few good HD channels out there. I only watch FOX-HD (OTA), YES-HD, HBO, and Discovery-HD. Instead of cramming a million "HD" channels into one pipe, give us on-demand HD.

LOL. OTA HD wins? 3 out of the 4 HD channels you watch aren't available OTA! You like YES-HD, Discovery, and HBO. Everyone else has a differnet idea of what their ideal HD universe needs to contain. That's why we need more channels.

Personally I want to see Sci Fi in HD at some point. Watching Battlestar Galactica in standard def just pisses me off to no end, because I know the HD versions are available. The pilot premiered in HD on NBC and the previous seasons rebroadcast on Universal

claims

I think with DirecTV, they get their inflated HD numbers by counting every local HD feed from every city they carry as a separate channel, even though the average user would only be able to see the four or five locals in his area. It makes sense that they would need to think in terms of capacity to carry HD locals to more and more markets, but for the average customer the impact isn't that impressive.

Re: claims

agreed... they 'do' have capacity to carry them all at once, but since they're all separate markets, it doesn't mean anything.

could be

You guys do know that discovery channel is putting out something like 6 or 7 more hd channels in the next year right?

Then you have the voom channels, channels like food network hd and hgtv hd and thats maybe 24 hd channels right there.

Then if cablevision puts out an hd version of news 12 and any other channels it owns.

There are the hd channels comming up and cablevision has the capacity due to switching over some of the less watched channels over to switched video.

I love Food network HD

They have some good documentery stuff on there. And Alton Brown is great to watch. I have learned more from him than most of my time watching other educational stuff on TV. He is worth a watch.

Me too. Food Network is good and the food looks great in HD. I saw it at a friends. It looks like you can reach through the TV and grab it! It's not a waste of HD at all unlike TNT where you get mostly upconverted and streched content except for the games.

If they get can get all the movies channels in HD that would be worthwhile. HBO is converting all of their 20 something movie channels to HD so thats good. So if we can get all of the Starz, Showtime, Encore and The Movie Channel in HD too, it would be great. HD is for movies and sports and anyway.

I could see something like Nick at Nite being useless for HD but not Food Network.

How about some new channels (not HD clones of existent ones)

I would like CV to pick up some channels (aside from their own VOOM ones) that they do not now carry such as BBC America and the Anime Channel (they have Anime On Demand but not the channel itself).
