CNN Realizes Wireless Carriers Selling Location Data
With Only Verizon Even Really Admitting It
by Karl Bode Thursday 03-Nov-2011 tags: business · wireless · bandwidth · consumers · wireless
Every so often a mainstream press outlet will pop its head up and realize that wireless carriers have started pretty much selling any and all user location data that isn't nailed down. There's no limit of people eager to buy this data, ranging from civic planning agencies to marketers. There's also virtually no consumer protections in place, as Congress continues to remain mired in partisan bickering. CNN takes a new look at which wireless carriers are selling what, noting that Verizon is the first company to even bother publicy confirming that this is going on (something we reported on last month). One quote of note:

"At the end of the day, we're getting to a situation where customers are the products that these wireless companies are selling," said Nasir Memon, a professor of computer science at New York University's Polytechnic Institute. "They're creating a playground to attract people and sell them to advertisers. People are their new business."

Of course you'll be seeing a rate reduction on your wireless phone and data bills as carriers begin to make billions selling everything you say or do, right?

Crab at Apple but....

There are a lot of App's available in iTunes that want to know your location but a least it now always asks if you want to give out this information. Most of them require it because it is needed for the service the app does, locations of business, restaurants, weather, highway traffic information, etc. Apple does not release this information. This in part was the huge fall out Apple had with Facebook. Facebook wanted access to your personal information and Apple said not only no but hell no. This is also true with magazines and newspapers. Periodicals need this sort of information so they can set a price for their advertising Apple will not share that information either.

Doesn't matter. The carriers know where you are even if you have your iDevice locked down tight. They use kit that is a bit less accurate, but relies on which cell towers can hear your phone ,etc. (e911 »secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/e···ed_9-1-1)

This is scary

It's scary to see how a person's internet trail allows people in the know to see a lot about you.

What's scary is ....

This has been going on pretty much since log scavengers (Urchin) and Cookies have existed. What once was just basic data (site/traffic) has become VERY personalized - to the point that sites such as your online stores/Facebook/streaming audio/YouTube/Google effectively have 'you' (even if you are listed as a number) profiled and tracked wherever you go, whatever you do.

The only piece that's _really_ missing is tagging your name onto some of these metrics. Put them altogether, and it would be _really_ scary.

Do think this is anything new. Why do you think many supermarkets have discount cards. They can track every purchase you make, and your name goes with it. Credit/debit cards do the same thing. This kind of information is the life's blood of a consumer economy like ours. If you want to avoid this sort of thing you are going to have to move to the middle of the Amazon Rain Forest get naked change your name to Tarzan and live off the land.

You mean some people actually give their real name and phone number for these loyalty cards?

And don't forget Google who tracks everything you do on the internet. And with their Google+ product demanding real names and ID's they are now tying all that info to real people.

very simple solution

consider personal information to be the intellectual property of that person and automatically copyright the information as it is created.

considering the way copyright is these days, that should cause enough problems to stop this kind of stuff in it's tracks.

Data

As CNN says- its great for small business owners to figure out target markets- and it is. I get information like this ALL the time from carriers and the Post Office based upon junk mail and other stats that you can buy.

Wasn't that someone's motto?

"People are our business."

(though, here, not in a good way)

(and, no, I don't mean 'Soylent Green' [really not in a good way])

Easy...

Simple solution to a simple problem.

You want to have a secret conversation? Have it in person.

You want to conduct a private transaction? Do it off-line.

You want to commit a crime? Leave your phone home.

Maybe someone will make a phone app like tab permissions. I don't see the damn ads since I turn off images. I can turn off javascript per site and if the idiots bug me enough their site and crap gets blocked.

If they send stuff and you don't buy, while it's annoying to you, it defeats the marketers' purpose and costs them some money for no return.

We do have supermarket cards, but have had them for over twenty years. You mostly wrote checks then and name and addy were on the checks anyway.

BTW - phone is rooted, and anything to do with location is frozen.
They would have to find latitude and longitude the old fashioned way.

If you get charged data for those ads, then it's time to start a general boycott of your cell co.

what you miss is...

You cell phone carrier knows where you are, by virtue of connecting to their network. Even the dumbest legacy phones will give away your its position if turned on.

Re: what you miss is...

and many of those legacy phones have GPS chips due to E-911 so its not just straight up triangulation they would depend on.

there is a reason why when you want to do crime but need a cell you use something like a Tracphone bought at a 7-11 with cash that you got at an ATM across town and never went near the turnpike with your EZ-Pass on the window.

most secure way to move data is ChevyNet aka driving a removable disk drive to the person who is getting it.

Short of someone stopping you and using the Smith&Wesson hack to man in the middle your trip there is no way to know the contents of your payload.

Slightly odd...

The wireless carriers will sell your data to whatever other business would want to pony up the cash.
But on the other hand, the carriers only need a signed Court Order to get it to the Feds for free.
What would you prefer? Well it doesn't really matter does it because both things are happening and will continue.
