Bundle Mania'Double play' still most popular ( old news - 12:17PM Sunday Nov 05 2006) tags: prices · competition · business · bundlesTipped by Optimized 22% of homes with pay TV service also buy at least one other telecommunications service (either phone or broadband) from the same provider, observes a new study by Knowledge Networks. The group states that cable providers lead the way in bundling, since TV & broadband is the most popular bundle. The report also notes that there are economic and racial variations when it comes to the popularity of triple play bundles: "The initial roll-out of so-called "triple play" services (TV, Internet and telephone) to affluent, high-potential areas is reflected in the difference in adoption penetration between homes with an income greater than $50,000 (33% report bundled service) and those with income less than $50,000 (15%). Further, triple play penetration is significantly different between Caucasian homes (24%) and African-American or Hispanic homes (16%)." A previous study we reported on found that only five percent of subscribers sign up for the triple-play, and very few customers are interested in nabbing four services from one provider. Another study observed that telcos are selling 1 to 1.5 revenue generating units (RGUs, aka one service) per customer, while cable companies perform slightly better, selling around 1.5 to 1.9 RGUs per customer. | Temporary Offer or High Price? You decide? Loads of the triple play offers by cable companies are only for ONE YEAR then they start jacking the rates back up.. telcos still don't get it about the OVERALL BOTTOM LINE PRICE which is still above cableco's temporary offer triple play.. so we continue to wait for a good deal on a triple play. No wonder people get the third service from another provider! Neither telcos or cablecos want to play fair with the 3rd service..

| Re: Temporary Offer or High Price? Cablevision (OV, iO and OOL) has a interesting twist on this, yes, the triple play is $99. But at the end of the offer, will give you a $25 credit towards your bill for the three services. In addition, the post-offer discount plan offers discounted movie and play tickets each week, and access to a discounted electronics store. CV owns movie theaters in the subscriber area and used to own a large electronics discounter, now gone bankrupt, but someone must still love to be in that business over there.
In my case, I was never allowed the triple play as I was an existing customer. I already had Internet and Cable service. I got a $5 discount for internet service. When I added the $35/mo phone service, I got an additional $20 discount and the movie ticket stuff. So, my phone service is only a $15 cash flow out, now instead of a $70 cash flow out.
It's not a bad thing....though I admit that with the level of cable service I have the monthly bill is $130.... -- »www.Warpstock.org

| Re: Single bill not a big draw; lower cost is said by TK Junk Mail :Just having a single bill is not the big draw that many firms bundling services hope it is. Saving money is the bigger incentive. So, while bundling is occurring, I think consumers are getting smarter and are buying bundles only if it is saving them some money. Probably. My promotional period for my cable service ends in 2 months. If they were to offer me a "triple play" for less than the cost of what I pay now, I would take it. -- Only SHATNER is Kirk. | |

| TV & Broadband I'm in that boat. Simpler for me, and the fact my cable company is actually good and has LOCAL support (Cox) unless that changed...
I'd put my verizon bill with my cable bill if I could but since they all partnered with Sprint, I'll have that separate bill that I don't mind.

| The reason is... With comcast, if I include the local programming on cable it ends up being slightly cheaper than just broaband itself. I dont use it though.
So technically my service would be considered a double-play, but not for the reasons they may think.
If HSI was cheaper by itself (stand alone) I would not have cable.

| More types of service than providers If consumers have a choice of only two providers (cable and telco) and get at least two instances of the four main services (TV, HSI, POTS, GSM/CDMA), it is highly likely that they will bundle them. I guess the surprise and the good thing here is that not much more bundling has occured. Apparently people prefer competition and not putting all their eggs in one basket. | |

Oh well, there are lot of things to do out here, hunt, fish, hike, ski or board (both types), I also keep active in the radio stuff doing public service work. Hmm... Bicycling is fun too. Then I have books, the computer and muds, the garden and yard. And that is only a quick list of things that fill my time when I am not at work for 9 hours a day. I won't go into the family stuff. Mostly the TV is for the wife so she can watch the judge shows and soaps while I am work. -- I am not lost, I find myself every time.
