Broadweave Completes iProvo Acquisition$40.6 million deal turns muni-fiber plan private... ( old news - 06:20PM Tuesday Sep 02 2008) tags: Fiber · business · bandwidth · municipal · Broadweave NetworksBroadweave Networks says they've completed the acquisition of the iProvo municipal fiber network after announcing plans to purchase the system for $40.6 million last May. "The acquisition makes Broadweave one of the largest Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) network operators in the country with a network that passes 36,000 homes, businesses, government buildings, and schools at speeds up to 1,000 times faster than cable or DSL," proclaims the company. Broadweave's first order of business for those 36,000 customers was to replace all in-home gateways, which were thought to be causing VoIP connectivity issues for those customers.

| Weird That selling access to the network and letting ISP's compete over the fiber.
Wonder why they did not try or it did not work. Seems to do well on DSL where laws do not cripple it.

"Broadweave will purchase the network for $40.6M though a city-financed loan spread over 19 years. As part of the deal, ownership of the network reverts to the city of Provo should Broadweave become unable to make its payments on the loan. The loan is currently backed by a $6M letter of credit from Sorenson Capital but requires no up-front money on Broadweave's part."
Say the break even is $4million a year, with almost 40K homes passed, they can offer dirt cheap rates, for basic service, a bit more for higher tiers.
$40 million for 40k homes passed with a preinstalled fiber network is very cheap. | |

| The whole deal stinks Broadweave got a sweetheart deal here. A former member of the city's telcom board brought in his investment firm to finalize the purchase, a member of Broadweave's board was the direct ecclesiastical leader for both the mayor and chair of the city council and the negotiations happened behind closed doors with minimal time for the city council to review the terms of the sale. There's something rotten in the state of Utah and it's the sale of iProvo to Broadweave, a company that few expect to succeed where the city failed. | |

| Broadweave speeds I was a customer of MStar until Broadweave bought iProvo. During that time we were promised speeds approaching 10 Mb. I was getting an average D/L speed of aprox 5-7 Mb, depending on customer usage. Now I get an average speed of less than 3 Mb. While still paying the same monthly rate for this service. I was getting 3 Mb from Comcast several years ago and moved over to iProvo expecting that I would get faster speeds. So far Broadweave has not delivered when it comes to better or faster service. | |
