Broadcom Settles for Less than Judge AwardedQualcomm's expected patent infringement fees cut in half

back in May, two legal issues remained. One was whether or not an import ban would be instituted and the other was whether the judge would award up to triple the amount of compensation ordered by a jury since the case was deemed willful. Both played out in favor of Broadcom with the
ban approved and the judge ordering a double award. As it turned out, however, an unrelated case had made the double award legally void. The judge said that Broadcom could either accept the original jury award of almost $20 million or agree to a new trial in which the company would have to re-prove the patent infringement. Broadcom
has decided to accept the amount. They plan to seek a permanent injunction against all Qualcomm chips found to violate the patent.
