Broadband's Third Wheel
Skepticism remains over power line connectivity
(old news - 05:03PM Monday Apr 07 2003)
tags: alternatives
Broadband over power lines has gotten renewed interest during the heated regulatory debate surrounding the telcos, though analysts don't believe PLC will be the third wheel on the broadband tricycle any time soon. According to past reports, power line companies will likely unveil their product at a significant price reduction from DSL and Cable, forcing an immediate price war. Industry leaders have set $30 as a target price point.

However, according to this latest story from Computer User, skepticism is still king when it comes to broadband over power-lines. While there are a growing number of trials occurring across the United States, the technology's market viability is still surrounded by questions. According to analysts, once PLC makes its debut on the high-speed scene, it will need to quickly acquire a 30% market share in order to become financially viable.

That's what I'd like to see

I wouldn't count on it. Qwest has been overpriced compared to Comcast (for years as AT&T) and Qwest doesn't appear to be in any big hurry to lower prices.

Or raise speeds. 640/272 or 256/256 may have been fine 5 years ago but things need to change or Qwest is going to be left in the dust.

Not in California

Well, of you're a Californian, then maybe broadband over powerlines isn't such a great idea. Besides the rolling blackouts we also had our rates raised by 200% at one time.

That already sounds like your average broadband provider to me. What's the point of powerline broadband if it isn't stable and cheap. Any Californian that signs up for this is clearly not thinking properly.

Re: Not in California

It wasn't the power distributors (e.g. PG&E) that caused havoc during the power crisis in CA. It was the producers and traders (e.g. Enron). Power Line Communications is a viable alternative. Total throughput should be about 2Mb/s in the next year or two...

Anybody notice...

Anybody notice that most of the people who were skeptics in that article were from CABLE COMPANIES!!! Not saying their skepticism isn't valid just that that I'm skeptical of their skepticism.

Re: Anybody notice...

Well the Power Companies would likely become the biggest monopoly's as you will never have a choice which Power Company you would like to use and there always raising rates here and there. tho this would apply to the areas where they could only get PLC

Re: Anybody notice...

I don't care since no one else is gonna give me broadband anytime soon anyway...as long as the pings are good and the downloads are decent I'm all for it even if it requires me to bathe in the blood of a hundred puppies, or deal with a monopoly.

This could get very interesting

We all know how cable monopolies act when it comes to broadband; we're used to their silly and annoying antics. We all know how the Baby Bells behave; their lobbying for deregulation is nothing new. But how will power monopolies deal in the broadband field? What will be their style?

Style

lets wait for them too get it up and going then worry about that
then you see cable and dsl get some real attitudes

hope they do make a go of it---who knows it might even work

be a shot in the arm for the millions who are stuck with only the so called--- space broadband---then we leave that too all the ufo's so they can download some cd's
see if the record company's can sue them

not that wont try it

Re: Style

Don't flame me for my comment people don't think this will work because it's the same plug you plug power in. But it uses a different modulation the technology is simpler than DSL and Dsl is working fine. There are some minor problems but those have been fixed. It's already running in some contries heck you can get home network threw powerlines now (100mbit)

Speeds

I wonder what the speeds would be like though. It's one line so wouldn't it be susceptible to slowdowns in peak hours like cable.

Everything has slowdowns in peak hours, not just cable. everything is shared at a certain point. cable the node, DSL the CO etc...your providers uplink is shared by all customers using that provider, when it becomes saturated, slowdowns occur.

Re: Speeds

Funny that, my Verizon line is always the same speed. It isn't fast really 730, but it is consistant.

That's if...

The power company wants the headache of being an ISP. I did some research into this, and the local power company where I live only wants to lease it's fiber to businesses. It has no plans to use it's power lines for Internet service. Other power companies may decide the same thing.

Keep in mind it isn't just a matter of plugging in the servers and the service is up and running. Additional (expensive) equipment is usually needed for the power companies to get this started. For the customers, the speeds are only 5 - 10 times faster than dial up. At least that was the result of the trial phase in Missouri.

Power companies are a live and well

My little town owns all its utilities except gas, phone and cable. We own the power lines, the power plant, the fiber loop and everything else connected to power or water within our area and have for 150 years. The town offers dial-up and Wireless Broadband (1500/1500)thru the city utility. It isn't a bad deal. The rates are reasonable; the worst I can say is ATT has horrible routing and even worse latency. Why we are routed thru St. Louis (known ATT bottleneck) and Chicago when the closest POP is Dallas is not only stupid it adds ten hops to trace route.

The best reason to do this is to punish the states that did not agree to give SBC and ATT a free reign of terror, or a free ride.

Cheers!
