Increase in scam programs on the rise...
(old news - 12:56PM Monday Aug 09 2004)
tags: software · spyware
Newsday is running a piece on bogus spyware applications that mimic successful free applications (like Spybot and AdAware), but either don't work, or worse: install spyware themselves. The article quotes Eric Howes, a BBR security forum regular, who maintains a list of 75 such suspect products, with more being added daily. Howes also points out the lengths to which over-eager entrepreneurs will go to get their products noticed (like phony review sites, Google rank manipulation, etc.).

Re: This should be illegal

I'm right along with you.

It use to be that most of the repair work I did was due to hardware and a few viruses here and there for those that didn't have any kind of virus protection on their computers. Not now, 98% of the computers I get in for repair are due to slow downs caused by Spyware/Adware that has been installed by the customer being dupped into installing spyware removal when the stuff is actually spyware itself.

Its the People too, but I hate the scams for this!

Is this anything new? I work at tech support and people get these rediculous programs "SpySpotter, SpyZapper", etc. It's all crap. There are three good spyware protection apps:

SpyBot Search & Destroy
AdAware
AOL Spyware Protection (Not the best, but better than nothing!)

People ought to know better. Damn these scam artists to hell.

I myself found I was running 1 of the programs on the list. Guess I will stick with spybot and adaware only.

That's the (2) I use and recommend every day. Then you have to explain that someone also needs a popup-blocker (I point 'em to Google), trojan finder/cleaner software, anti-virus, kept up-to-date, which NEVER are, and the list goes on.

I hate needing two programs, Adaware and Spybot, to do the same job though...

Spybot's done the job for me all by itself. This past weekend I worked on a machine with a dozen distinct pieces of spyware (300 traces in all, AFTER I cleaned up the obvious stuff manually) and Spybot cleaned it right out after 2 or 3 passes. Even a (thank goodness) low-order CWS infection.

Ad-Aware's not necessary, although it doesn't hurt as a secondary check.

People I know (of).....

I know more than a few people who have fallen for these.... One transpired from a popup warning "your computer is infected !!!" and she fell hook, line, and sinker for the "free" scan. Of course it found things and she had to pay to clean them up. What did she do ?? Pulled out her credit card, of course !!

A Better OS

@verizon.net

Re: People I know (of).....

Everytime I see a spyware article I have to laugh. Everytime I read about people *PAYING* for a popup blocker or paying for antivirus...or spyware removal tools...LOLOL

Why bother worrying about spyware at all? It's called Linux or Unix. Google if you're unfamilar with the terms.

Why do you people put up with an inferior operating system designed for the lowest common denominator...an idiot? ROTFL.

Raise your standards. Demand better. If M$ can't provide it then find somebody who can. There is absolutely no reason why you should have to put up with spyware, popups, virii, or spam. There's no reason why you should have to spend your hard-earned money FIXING an operating system by purchasing anti-virus or spyware solutions.

Re: People I know (of).....

Uh-huh. Replacing an operating system with another that is incompatible with just about every program to advoid spyware...that's rich.

Since M$ has the monopoly on the only easy (ok, RELATIVELY easy) to use OS that runs just about every program out there under the sun. Linux still is in a "good for servers & expert PC tinkerers" faze...kinda been in that rut for a while. It has yet to actually touch the home PC market, where your average Joe consumer will actually contimplate running Linux on their home PC.

Yes, Linux is an awesome OS, but it requires a huge investment in researching your stuff, scouring tons of message forums for your incompatibility problems, and selectively searching out for software that did your old Windows tasks. Personally, paying M$ a bit of money for an OS that doesn't take a master's degree to use, and simply requires good PC use habits, well...it's a good investment IMHO.

All of my software does not run on anything besides Windows. And guess what, I like Windows. It works for me. Does what I want it to do. Gives me little or no troubles. If I did nothing but maybe browse the internet, enjoy networking, troubleshoot my hardware to work, then perhaps I would be using something else.

And I bet if a good majority of people switched to a "better" OS, all the virus, spyware, worm, etc. writers will jump on there. Nothing is security proof. These people only exploit Windows because this impacts the most.

Hahahaha... That's funny. A frenzy? More like "It's about time Microsoft started paying more attention to security and the impact their traditionally buggy software has had on the computing world!!!" The only thing Gates has done is to figure out to put out crap software with just enough features to keep customers coming back. Oh yeah, and he also learned to mimic IBM's tatics of the 60's-80's of squelching the competition.

Yay! Another Linux pimp that can't stick to the topic.

Why should we all change to linux? It's obvious that it causes adult A.D.D. and a shortened attention span.

I mean, it has to, because all you unregistered Linux whores seem to jump off topic at around 7 to 8 posts...

Sorry, but it's not so much the OS as it is the person using the OS. I run Windows and remain virus and spyware free because I know how to practice safe computing.

On a trip to my brother-in-law's this weekend, I took it upon myself to clean his computer system. He had 474
spyware "hits" as found by Ad-Aware and 300+ as found by Spybot after Ad-Aware was done. This amounted to at least 8 different spyware programs (4 running at the same time). I lost count after a bit. He also had a trojan horse virus.

He hadn't updated the anti-virus program that I set him up with, or installed any Windows Updates for awhile. He also went to Golden Palace casino and downloaded some software from them to gamble online a bit. (He thought they were a reputable company.)

Now if he were to wipe his drive clean and install Linux, would he be 100% secure? The answer is no, because he would likely leave unneeded services running, run unknown programs (e.g. trojans), and generally follow unsafe computing practices. Not being on the "target of choice" OS would afford some protection, but his unsafe computing practices were the root cause, not the OS he was running.

A co-worker of mine had 1200 spyware hits computer was moving at snails pace. I agree with user error being the biggest problem. That is why my wife can not use my computer and I get the joy of fixing hers.

Could you clarify that please? There is a domain spywareblaster.com which is NOT Javacool's website and is advertising a rogue anti-spyware program.

Javacool's website is »www.javacoolsoftware.com/index.html

SpywareBlaster is here:

This type of misleading marketing and confusion is *exactly* what these sleazy companies count on to sell their products.

I also recall the link being there, directing one to SpywareBlaster, the last time I used Spybot S&D. If I remember correctly, it said that there was something that SWB searches for that Spybot doesn't — but don't quote me on that. Not on my home machine now or I'd check.

Re: spybot

I followed the link to SpywareBlaster from SpyBot S&D a couple of months back and installed it on my system. I have had no problems, and when I run SpyBot S&D, I find that Spywareblaster has done its job quite well, with little or no spyware installed behind my back.
Also, Spywareblaster has a couple of extras, like the ability to turn off Macromedia Flash when you don't want it, which helps keep down the annoying ads when you open a web page (such as weather.com).

Linux ?

I don't think the Linux is the answer because it needs to be user friendly. Maybe this is not a problem for current Linux users but for the rest of us it is.

You guys keep bitching about Bill Gates stealing ideas from others, well that maybe so but he improved those ideas and made them real. I wish Linux developers would copy stuff from MS world, one click install comes to mind, and when I say one click install I mean one standard extension.

If Linux becomes a home desktop market leader (it will never happen) these problems will be affecting Linux world too, maybe not to this extent but these problems will be present. Yes MS should and could write better software with far less holes and exploits but it's the users that make things worse. I still hear from my friends about problems caused by 1 year old viruses, things that would not have happened in the first place, if they patched their OS long time ago or updated they AV software if they have one running (which is usually a 90 day version AV pre-installed on a comp purchased 3 years ago).

Now we should go back to discussing fake anti-spyware software.

Never will be a leader, huh? Well, check out »www.linspire.com - they will give M$ a run for their money. It is about 1/4 of the price of XP and M$ is running scared - why do you think they sued them in many countries and also made them change their name from Lindows to what is now Linspire.
