But don't delete that IM from Oprah
(old news - 01:03PM Saturday Mar 08 2008)
tags: business · spam · VoIP
Skype may have seen a recent surge in activity but that doesn’t mean that all of those people who are using the VoIP system are pleased with their experiences. The main problem seems to be with VoIP spam (alternatively called SPIT or SPIM) which consists of instant messages sent to Skype users from fake accounts (such as those sexy girls that so obviously want to talk to you).
Skype Journal asked the business what it’s doing to stop the problem and was told that “each copy of Skype software attempts to identify patterns of activity that appear to mimic the sending of unsolicited message content to a broad audience. Once this pattern of behavior has been identified, the software limits the number of messages that can be sent. In addition, each Skype user has a range of privacy settings at their disposal that can prevent the receipt of any kind of unsolicited contact, whether by video, voice or chat.”"
In other words, Skype users still basically have to block each spam IM themselves. Don’t block someone claiming to be Oprah on Skype though because she’s turned out to be a strong supporter of the technology.

Re: its nice......

I guess you haven't run into any of the telemarketers or other great people who ignore the Do Not Call list.

Unfortunately, Skype users can't block all spam

Unfortunately, what the Skype Journal isn't telling you is that you can't "block" those unwanted contact requests. You can block chats, and audio, and video, but there is nothing you can to do block the first contact request, or even to stop it from popping up on your screen, complete with whatever picture the sender chooses to include. Since the spammers are continuously creating new Skype accounts to send from, you are subject to a never-ending stream of contact requests - and Skype refuses to even make the minimal changes to let you prevent them from automatically opening in front of whoever happens to be on the computer at the time.

Re: Unfortunately, Skype users can't block all spam

It is not a question of blocking a contact, it is a request to exchange contact information. You can not block it. There is nothing in privacy or security in Skype which will allow you to block it. Being invisible will not protect you forever, the Skype sex-spammers are continuously trolling for Skype user names. If they haven't found you yet, they will, and most likely sooner rather than later. Just hope that it is you who is sitting in front of the computer when whatever sex-picture pops up, and not your spouse, or your children.
