'I must be in the front row....'

Bell Canada has seen some significant competition from smaller Canadian operators like TekSavvy who've succeeded by making customer service a selling point. Today, Bell announced two new initiatives the company claims are geared toward improving customer satisfaction. The first, dubbed "Same Day Next Day service," is a new promise by Bell that if they can't fix your problem remotely, they'll have a tech on site either that same day or the next day, at no charge. The company also now says that for an additional $60, they'll speed up your installation:
Customers who order Express Install will receive next-day installation of Bell TV, Bell Internet and Bell Home Phone services. A single one-time fee of $59.95 applies to all next-day Express Installs whether a customer orders it for one, two or all three Bell home services. Customers can always opt instead for regular free installation on any these services based on Bell's normal installation scheduling.
What do you think, Bell Canada customers? Is being bumped to the front of the installation line worth your sixty dollars?

If you just moved and really need new services installed right away the extra fee may be worth it. But if you are just switching providers, why pay extra.

No thanks.

You shouldn't have to pay an additional fee for service you should already be receiving.

Re: No thanks.

Again, I repeat my statement. You should not have to pay extra for something you should already be receiving. If a company does not want to get you service as fast as they can (therefore also getting your payment much sooner), then that's their choice. Instead, this company is starting to offer these "expedited" services for an extra fee, which is something one shouldn't have to pay for to get service, since, of course, they could go to another provider and the the same or better service without the fee. Sounds a bit ridiculous to me.

Well this sounds like it bumps you to the front of the line, so it's an expidited install. I think I would like this, as I pay bills online and need a connection. I don't think it's a bad thing as long as the regular install is free. That should be free. An expidited, next day install or even same day install could be chargeable in my world. A 2 day charge is pushing your luck though. Let's not go down that slippery slope....

Have you heard of Fedex/UPS paying more for Same Day, Over Night, 3-day compared to the standard 5-7day delivery time? Pretty much the same thing

Hmmmm, what to choose?

Order DSL online/via the phone and pay $60 to have it installed by the next day...

Call Charter and pick up a self-install kit/obtain my own modem and have my Internets activated same day...for free...

You're aware you're talking about companies in two different countries, right? I think it would be more relevant to ask what Bell's competition is doing.

That depends, though. If you currently subscribe to TV service from your cable provider, then no, you don't need a site visit since you already are connected to their network.

But if you are a new customer, then you need a tech visit to either 1) connect the drop or 2) remove filters.

But yea, being able to do a self install with cable is a major plus. The fact that you can literally be up and running within minutes of purchasing/receiving your cable modem makes it so much easier to leave DSL immediately.

For A Heart/Lung Machine Maybe

What's a few days or week when we are talking TV,Internet, Phone? Billions of people have lived their entire lives without any of them.

Re: For A Heart/Lung Machine Maybe

Or months or bell just forgets you altogether when you order dry dsl with a 3rd party provider. I live here so i know 100 percent as a fact whereas you just surmise things. Believe you me 60 bucks is the bargain of the century for dry dsl with a 3rd party provider.

So...

Qwest, once the lines are laid, just ships the modem to you to get service running. That takes a bit, but nobody has to come and install everything. Comcast OTOH does have to come for an install, and it costs $50, but Bell sell DSL right?

Yes it is a DSL service, with free throttling too & usage caps.

here you pay $20 to have your internet installed by cable. No self install option available. But when they come out they run a new line from the cable drop to your modem, install the line at the tap, run a new line if you want from the tap to your house. Buckeye treats the customers right. Hell can even have you a tech for install faster than AT$T can ship your modem.

Well which is it - the same day or the next day?
Residential customers can receive faster repair on any of their Bell home services for free – Bell Home phone, Bell Internet or Bell TV.1 If a service issue cannot be corrected from Bell’s offices, we will dispatch one of our professional technician teams to your home on the same or next day to undertake any necessary repairs.
1 Available to residential customers in select areas/buildings in Ontario and Québec, where access and technology permit. Subject to availability. Subject to change without notice. Other conditions apply. (1) Repair charges for each service (where applicable) extra.
Oh, so when did Bell get the authority to dictate POTS repair times instead of the CRTC?
Sounds like the same crapy service as before, but for an additional fee, or even crapier service for free.

no its just that if you pay more you get that added service of coming before the law. If you don't pay for that Bell only has to fix your phone line in the time the law states.

Don't confuse a repair issue with provisioning. The $60 is for provisioning. Repair issues are FREE.

Repair issues are free (611 call) but the time to resolve can be several days, even for landline.

Back in the day it would only take minutes or hours.

True, but back in the day it was only one system and only once company, whereas today there is interconnection all over the place and many companies placing demands on one workforce where the demands have to be prioritized according to where they come from rather than the order they come in.

I'm sure if you were willing to go back to the situation of 'back in the day' where it was only one company, things would return to the way they were. Interested?

This is a GOOD THING ... FCC/CRTC -- pay attention!

... and we have wholesaler companies like TekSavvy to thank.

Next time someone argues that wholesalers don't help all consumers by adding competitiveness to a market, show them this article!

Bell Express Install Option

It just means that Bell will recoup their losses for incompetent service by having the poor customer pay for their gaffs. Sounds like Bell Canada, to me.

First, they cap the competition....

... so they won't have to compete on services offered, as they force the competition to offer the same services they do.

Now they want to try and work on the customer service side.

Sounds great, but paying an extra $60 just so they will do what they should be doing in the first place sounds just like Bell.

looks good on paper...

but does that mean that new hidden fees will show up in people's bills? As a customer for their Mobility services I've been through a lot of crap with bell (mind you- with enough whinging they would usually cave and fix my problem right away or give me some kind of compensation) ... but I'm still not convinced.

They need to rethink their strategy on customer loyalty, because it's not just about customer service. For one thing, I'm sick of seeing their advertisements EVERYWHERE on the TTC, covering buses, streetcars, on every possible place there can be a poster. This is called visual pollution, folks. Sure this is also effective advertising because it's well, a friggin' DELUGE, but, that's highly unoriginal (I much prefer Telus/Clearnet's witty ads - and because they're witty, they don't need as many of them). As a customer, I resent it and it insults my intelligence. Forget brand recognition, it gives me brand angst. (Do I sound bitter at all?) There's one tip for them. Stopping 'traffic' shaping would be another step in the right direction, improving their telephone customer service experience would be another step, and creating more affordable plans (and try to cut out the hidden/surprise fees?!) would be yet another towards creating a better, more competitive image for themselves as a company.

normal user install

I was only scanning over this, but k6richar was the only person I saw that hit the important point in my opinion. How much longer will it take for a normal install to be completed now? Seems like everyone might end up paying the extra unless they want to wait 3 weeks for an install.

Another money grab..

Being an ex-Bell customer (*puke*), a lot of people who were also customers (or perhaps still are, in which case you have my sympathies) are aware their normal non-"expedited" service is piss poor, there are numerous cases where something is scheduled, and no tech shows, no explanation, nothing. Some people even reschedule and have this happen again. Many customers have had to take days off and deal with this crap.

So now, they introduce express install to give frustrated customers an outlet for Bell's poor service. How about fix your g-damn service before gouging people for more money?
