Court ruling overturned; Audible Magic did not work.
06:33PM Monday Oct 27 2008 by Karl Bode
tags: legal · Fileswapping · world
From Australia to the United States, the entertainment industry is waging a public relations and lobbying war in an effort to force ISPs to become piracy nannies, forever tasked with scanning their networks for traders of bootleg 80's Knight Rider episodes, then terminating the accounts of Hasselhoff-loving offenders everywhere. Last year we noted that a Belgian ISP named Scarlet was ordered to block illegal p2p transfers on their network by a Belgian Judge, a decision applauded by the entertainment industry at the time -- but a task the ISP found impossible to actually accomplish. The ISP has seen the original decision reversed, after they were able to show that one of the more popular filtering systems, Audible Magic (which we've been talking about for years), simply did not work.

RIAA nails George W. Bush for file sharing
George W. has been video-taped openly admitting he plays music by The Beatles on the BushPod.

The Big Four Organized Music cartel’s RIAA is now after him for stealing copyrighted downloads.

Technically, it can be, if they put up any attempt to prevent you from copying it.

Well then Steve Jobs is headed for jail too, because my iTunes has a big ole "Rip CD" feature right in the menu at the top.

yea but the DMCA is a lower existance then the speed limit. because unlike the speed limit, breaking the DMCA never puts anybody at risk.

doing so violates the red book standard for CD's so...they then are in violation of the license of the CD so the cd itself is in violation....the circle of life....

What do they expect?

There is just no such thing as a cost-effective, efficient, and reliable means to filter pirated material.

How do you deal with eliminating false positives? How do you flag data transfers by their content without needing ridiculous amounts of processing power? How do you deal with encryption?

It is a huge task which none of today's technology can accomplish. Especially with the encryption side of things, any decent encryption will always be miles ahead of those trying to crack it.

Re: What do they expect?

Blocking P2P isn't hard - what is hard is blocking illegal sharing vs legal sharing. This turns into a cat and mouse game. If the RIAA/MPAA wants to stop sharing - it's their job, not the ISP, to monitor this stuff.

Encryption is of course going to be the MAFIAA's downfall. As the cat and mouse game gets more sophisticated, and the "pirates" find better ways of bypassing or circumventing the filters, they are going to need more processing power. Eventually, the encryption will require the same amount of CPU power the NSA uses; in some ways, the encryption itself has already reached NSA grade.

256 bit RSA? Fat chance if you've got a good pseudorandom key.

Re: What do they expect?

where the hell have you been? cracking 256 bit RSA is no sweat, even i could right a program to crack it on my e8400 machine and break in a reasonalbe amount of time.

i'd suggest you should use 1024/RSA atleast or 2048/RSA, but using RSA for encrypting lots of data is just stupid. use something like blowfish or AES256.

Correction, Rijndael 256-bit encryption. Again with a pseudorandom full-length key.

perhaps a 48 bit WEP key, but no way it could break 128 bit > encryption within a reasonable time ( It would probably take years and years...)

Re: What do they expect?

Let's not forget something here...

This encryption cracking would have to be done on the fly for it to be of any use. By the time you crack it the data transfer may have already completed.

Of course, you could store the packets for later analysis, but that is not reasonable either.

In other words to filter/flag all pirated content going over an ISP's network would take amounts of processing power far beyond anything that is practical.

Yes, your video card might break some encryptions in a few seconds with it's processing power. But now throw at it all the data flowing over an ISP's pipes and watch even 1000 video cards crumble under the workload.

See what I'm getting at?

Share the wealth

Every time you share a Metallica CD another band member dies.

If it was just that simple.

I remember back around 2000 or so, when Metallica had their huge issue with Napster, I bought the "Napster GOOOOOOD!" tshirt that was a parody of the popular "Napster BAAAD" flash film.

North American Union??

Not too related, but please, can someone tell me what this whole free trade agreement and north american union that we will become...

Bush already signed it Oct 13, 2008
It will basically combine mexico, canada and the US and we will be using the "Amero", and sovereignty in the US would eventually be obsolete.

Go ahead and call me "Another conspiracy theorist"
i don't care, but talk about it, share facts and opinons, for god sakes, just talk about it at least and don't pretend that it won't happen because it has already been signed and it will take in effect 2010

Even if the president signed this thing, (and there doesn't seem to be any proof cited by the poster to support that claim) the U.S. Senate would have to approve it, as per the U.S. Constitution:

Article II, Section II:

"He shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur; "

Such an event would be in the Congressional Record, and would be covered by the media, unless it was in a closed session. Such sessions are rare, and are usually noted by the media.

That, coupled with the other posting debunking the monetary term, leads me to post a big, fat...

Debunked.

No matter how hard the New World Order tries to make Intellectual Property real or that is to say have physical properties, God is the only one that can create something out of nothing. Man cannot change the laws of nature.

Intellectual Property is a fraud on its face. Now the intellect can create property but the intellect is not property itself and could not possibly be even if man wanted it. The intellect is ideas, thoughts and words an abstract and does not exits in the physical realm. Hence property is an object that has physical attributes. Intellectual Property therefore is impossible to steal.

The fraud becomes obvious by way of laws enacted to give it substance. Creating such laws for real property is not necessary because the human mind knows that taking real property: cars, houses, land and labor is wrong because it exits.

I'm so sick and tired of these billion dollar industries/corporations crying poor mouth all the time. Crying and going on about losing money for this, losing money for that meanwhile there raking in record profits every year. The very people these bozo's go after(us the public) are the very same people who still contribute to lining these greedy corporations pockets with cash in some form or another.I'm not for piracy but I'm sure most people that actually do pirate things be it a little or a lot are still contributing in other ways to helping these corporations make billions. Maybe they should watch the national news sometime and see exactly what it's like to be poor with the hundreds of thousands of children and human beings in general are dieing and these corporations couldn't give a damn.

Makes me sick of the greed.
