With the selective deployment of both U-Verse and FiOS, AT&T and Verizon have been forced to switch from mass marketing to more viral approaches. Verizon's marketing for FiOS has been nothing short of unique, with the company advertising the service via Fios hummers, at FiOS festivals and even via Fios pizza boxes.

In their latest launch market of Rhode Island, they're using regular people to advertise their fiber to the home service.

Their new "Be Famous With FiOS" marketing campaign videotapes state residents gushing over Verizon FiOS for fifteen seconds, then posts all the videos to a website where a lucky few will be sized up by a former American Idol finalist.

Five Rhode Island residents will then be selected to take part in a broader advertising campaign, where we assume they'll gush over FiOS in slightly higher definition.
