Protecting Steve Jobs from drive-by re-subscription
(old news - 04:50PM Monday Feb 27 2006)
tags: security · privacy · BBR-News · Oddities · Mac
Users in our All things Macintosh forum recently discovered a vulnerability at the MacWorld website that allowed you to plug in any e-mail address and obtain subscriber account information (even of say, Steve Jobs or the President of MacWorld). Some interesting posters stop by this thread to comment, including Leo Laporte (of TechTV fame), and MacWorld editor Jason Snell. The flaw, now fixed, was thanks to a company named CDS, who provide circulation and list-management services for numerous magazines.

Funny

Its odd how long it took to fix such a serious problem but at least someone more "known" came along and got it looked into sooner finally

Been a while I think

If I remember correctly it's been this way for years. Funny thing is when I would go there and look up my information I just never thought about it being abused. But I do remember having issues with my address changing a lot. I hope you at least got a free subscription for your discovery.

I didn't get anything for it, but wasn't asking either. I'm just glad its taken care of. Macworld didn't seem to happy that I made it public.

Re: Been a while I think

Jealous, I dont think so. He could have quietly made his findings to the magazine. Instead, he decided to put all of the subscribers info out in the open. Very very uncool even though I do not like Macs.

I hope he got the cookie
