Average U.S. Mobile User Consumes 450MB Per Month
From 208MB Per Month This Time Last Year
by Karl Bode Monday 23-Jul-2012 tags: business · wireless · bandwidth · stats · wireless
According to research firm Nielsen, the average United States mobile subscriber used 450 MB per month in the first quarter of 2012. That's double the average of 208 MB per month for all U.S. mobile subscribers during the first quarter of 2011. The data was culled from the voluntarily provided usage statistics of roughly 65,000 consumers. The growth of course comes not coincidentally as smartphone ownership went from a minority of all mobile users in early 2011 -- to nearly half of all mobile users earlier this year. A study from last year indicated that Sprint users unsurprisingly consume the most data per month due to the company's continue offer of unlimited data plans.

Desire more statistics

I'd personally like to see the Median rather than the Mean average in this case. In addition to that, I'd also like to see the size of the sample pool to determine how many users were polled in this study. A tracking line of the sampled user's responses and the age / demographic group polled would be great as well.

The median would undoubtedly be even lower than the mean. Most users use very little mobile data, and the mean(aka average) would be higher due to the small # who use MUCH more data.

I agree. I think what you will find are the same thing we find here at our company. We have 90% of our users who use very little, and then 5% who use a lot, followed by 5% who are in the 5-10gb per month. The actual split for common consumers is probably the same.

And also, post a box-plot of the historical survey range. Then we could see the spread within the group as well as year over year or month to month data.

Hell, I'm pretty sure >90% of us BBR users know Minitab well enough to crunch these numbers in minutes if they would share the data.

Yeah, but you forgot to take into account, that I am a lazy bum. But, yup, both the basic MS stuff could crunch it quickly. Survey's, White Papers, and Astro-turfing only stick around because they are used for marketing not the dissemination of the truth.

We have to rely on Karl Bode for the real meat of the matter.

They did say they tracked both smartphone and feature phones. So smartphone users by themselves would have a much higher data use..

Exactly. Average use is a useless number without some idea of the skew. Typical data use patterns are extremely skewed so the mean is, well, pretty meaningless.

Unless, of course, you're on an anti cap agenda and want to lie with statistics. Because, of course, highly skewed data actually makes the carriers' point - that it's a very small proportion of users who are affected by a cap, but they are the ones who eat most of the data.

Avg 3G ATT is 160mbs because of pathetic 200mb plan.

Switching to Verizon with iPhone 5 to get a gig for same price.

So whats the point of having a smart phone?

If you have a device that is basically a small computer in your hands and you only use 250 mb... why do you need a "smart-phone"? I Have a Samsung droid charge, got it right before the unlimited plans vanished, and i LOVE showing people that have newer smart phones what mine can do.. they are amazed.... IM always amazed that they have no clue that there phone can do the same things plus more. People always want the "latest and greatest" thing but really have no clue why they needed it. Guess they just love paying for a new phone and contract. (insert apple fan boy rant how they NEED the latest iPhone when they just got their current phone only 1 year ago and apple wants to offer a new phone before their contract is up.)

Re: So whats the point of having a smart phone?

I hate those posts. As if you don't consume enough data you shouldn't have a smartphone. Funny how you talk about showing people how much your phone can do yet you can't see that a smartphone can do things that don't require a data connection and there's also that thing called WiFi. I've got Unlimited 4g with Verizon and I'm on the last day of my cycle. I have consumed 181mb this month. What's the point of my smartphone? Navigation, Music, games, keeping track of my work hours and construction jobs, there's so many things I'm using mine for yet you have already decided that because ive consumed less than 200 mb my smartphone is pointless. Cmon now!

There are TONS of reasons for having a Smartphone, other than hogging mobile bandwidth that could better be done on a TELEVISION!!! Or a radio! Additionally, a Smartphone can use a home Wi-Fi connection, or public Wi-Fi without burdening the 3G towers. I used around 50 MB on my iPhone last month (an average amount for me) and I did everything I wanted from it. Of course, I also watched the TELEVISION, went to a MOVIE, listened to the RADIO, and used WI-FI. Imagine that! Then there are those who want their "unlimited 3G/4G and burn 20 GB/mo. @$$H01#$

Cool. My use continues to climb to a current average of 12GB per month, and will continue to rise as long as I have unlimited data. When Comcast decides to impose a hard cap in my area I wouldn't be surprised to see my 4G cell data to hit 50GB or more when I need more than 300GB in a given month.

Low caps, dropping the numbers.

Looking at my 4 month avg, I used 1364826.5 KB or 1.3 GB. I am what I would consider a normal user, no tethering or video streaming. The numbers do appear to be a bit low.

As other users have deduced, low caps are neutering the numbers and keeping them low.

Re: Low caps, dropping the numbers.

Seriously? You're using well over 1GB/mo of cell data with no streaming? That is tough to do. I have family members who are on their iPhone all day and only hit 400MB or so.

You sure you're not streaming something? Audio maybe?

Re: Low caps, dropping the numbers.

its really easy to hit 2-3 GB without streaming anything, i do it monthly(according to my phone). App updates, phone updates, and web browsing and games and all that for me is using about 2, and then when I do toss in streaming, it goes to 5-10GB range. I have straight talk unlimted BTW.

146 MB of streaming music while I was testing out a streaming app, still over a gig with other things.

On my Galaxy S2 I use "My Data Manager". It keeps track of all data used daily/monthy, what app uses how much data, and how much data each app used on either wifi or mobile or roaming.

False numbers...

Part of the plan so they can reduce caps in accordance with "fair" policies.

I find it MATHEMATICALLY IMPOSSIBLE that the numbers would go down when content, especially advertisements (video and audio) are done more frequently in High-Definition which equals higher file-size no matter how you slice it.

Just another capitalist push to create a "false" impression to further their own goals.

I'm 1GB-2GB for mobile data

I'm on Red Pocket Mobile (AT&T MVNO), and they just recently cut back their top plan from 2GB of data to 1GB. I sometimes miss my unlimited data on T-mobile, but don't miss the EDGE only speeds.

Maybe once T-Mobile finally refarms their Nashville spectrum, I'll jump back to them.

usage

My wife still has the VZ unlimited plan and uses between 250-500MB/mo. Myself I have the 10GB plan and use every single bit I can without going over. I now use her phone to tether to our new Nexus 7's.

Re: usage

I wondering if they are also taking into account the amount of data that has been offloaded to the near wifi connection. I have a Galaxy S2 and my cell usage is about the avg but my wifi usage on my cell is 11.1 GB. This is youtube, netflix, emails, streaming music, etc. Luckily i have sprint so it wouldn't be a problem but what about other people who actually use their phone?

Average mobile user consumes 450MG monthly

How much of this 'consumption' is pushed onto our mobile devices by the ISP through advertisments that none of us ask for but are forced to pay for and this advertising artificially inflates our 'consumption'. If I choose not to consume this advertising my consumption would be drastically less monthly.

I guess my all night session of 50 Mbps data from UseNet doesn't get counted?

where is the wifi

this article is out of touch with reality since most smartphone users will grab as much free/near free wifi as possible before using any of their precious contract capped minutes. this is why over 90% of all pad computers sold are wifi only. so mobile users may consume 450mb/mo of 3g, while taking probably ten times as much over wifi which essentially means smartphone providers are NOT providing the service people want - wifi is.

Already at 1.5 gig, definitely not the "average" user

Click for full size
1.5 gig data usage
Just picked up the Samsung Galaxy S3 (subsidized, got to keep unlimited ) on Friday 07-20-2012, and as of today here is my usage. If you can't already tell, that's 1.5GB in 4 days, so I couldn't even use the 10GB per month plan. Now a lot of people say "Well you should be on WiFi for Netflix, and blah blah blah" but unfortunately not all my friends I hang out with make enough money to have internet, or even a computer at home... So that's not really viable.

Anyway, being a new phone and all is why this looks this way, in about a month or two it shouldn't be that crazy of usage as I usually only get to about 10GB per month, maybe 20GB on crazy months (try not to go above the radar of what VZW currently offers so hopefully they don't bother me) as mobile as I am, I just don't understand how the average person uses 400MB only, especially when you're out and about almost all day and never near WiFi.

Re: Already at 1.5 gig, definitely not the "average" u

I thing the data is rigged... there taking those low use customers as and average base and concidering anyone who uses over a certain amount to be an extreme user and there not counted in the evaluation of there results.

450mb HA HA... My average monthly for the last year on TMO was 4500 mb per mth.. ( for those reading this and that don't know that 4.5 GB) I think writer or editor left out that last 0 that was to be there.
