Walt Mossberg: pricey as hell but works pretty well...

tags: business · wireless · alternatives
For a few years, Autonet Mobile has been promoting their in-car Wi-Fi hotspot, which uses a Sprint wireless broadband connection (kind of a 3G EVDO Wi-Fi MVNO 4x4, you dig?) to provide connectivity on the go. Their Wi-Fi router has shown up via a few scattered rental agencies at the rock bottom price of $10.95 per day, but the device seemed to be in a perpetual state of "coming soon" when it comes to direct purchase via the product website. That has changed, and the website now at least directs you to a sales associate.

Autonet's biggest jump into the mainstream came with Chrysler announcing that their 2009 lineup would feature Autonet broadband as a feature. For those who need to update your Facebook profile while being chased by Johnny law, Autonet isn't cheap. The service includes a $499 router, and $29 or $59 monthly monthly service plans featuring 1 or 5GB respective caps. Chrysler will also charge you $35 to $50 for installation, and there's a $35 "activation fee" involved as well. Brandishing a bumpy ride pun, good 'ole Walt Mossberg seemed impressed:
I've been testing Autonet Mobile in a rented Saturn Vue SUV in Washington, D.C., and its suburbs, and found it worked well for most basic Internet tasks like email and Web surfing. The router turns on when the car does, and the Wi-Fi signal shows up about 30 seconds later. However, Autonet is relatively pokey. It's too slow to be reliable for streaming video longer than brief YouTube clips, or for smooth video chatting.
While it's true that you can use existing mobile routers or software solutions (including Windows Mobile 6) for in-car service, Walt seems to vaguely suggest that Autonet has somehow improved mobile connectivity. Still, it's not exactly clear why you'd need more than a smart phone (either alone or tethered) for connectivity while you're cruising down the interstate. Broadband lovers probably already have 3G service, and you can't roll your plans together (even if you have Sprint) -- so Autonet remains a product for those with plenty of disposable income (or maybe a death wish).

really???

Is internet connectivity really something we need in our vehicle to increase the instances of accidents and pedestrian deaths? I think we are doing fine on our own thank you.....

Why?

I can see this lasting until the first dumb ass wrecks while typing an email. At that point the whole mess will become a liability and insurance companies will be charging higher premiums if you have this in a new car. You can't trust idiots as it is and you certainly won't be able to once people start having internet access in the car. One good idea would be to have it shut off if the car is in drive and there is no one in any of the passenger seats, much like they do airbags.

Autonet going after wrong market-should target school buses

Kids are sitting on school buses for up to an hour or more per day going back and forth to school. Autonet should be pitching their product to school boards and how having a router on a school bus would allow all the rugrats to access the internet on their long rides.

Great idea TK, and even better: GreyHound! I'd have given a testicle higher fare to have wifi on the big dog between Salt Lake and Lewiston.

if it plugs into the car power, then it might be worth it. Do you have a recommendation?

I have never heard of such a thing. I know there are a number of portable routers that allow USB or PC Card 3G modems to be attached however. Here is an example of one »www.kyocera-wireless.com/kr1-router/

Re: DIY

just get a cigarette lighter adapter.

120 watt adpater should be enough for the modem/router and laptop on AC.

Multiple user issues......

Not sure if this applies in this or any other case, but I found multiple users pretty much killed usability on a Sprint provisioned account. Not sure if it is Sprint's service, the EVDO modem (Sierra Wireless Compass 597 USB modem), or the router (a firmware updated Cradlepoint EVDO/Wi-Fi router) that's causing the problem.

Parked...

... or at a rest stop, or restraunt, or ??? it would be great to have that connectivity.

Again with the wireless 5GB cap. What's the point?
A few emails, casual surfing... forget watching anything worthwhile more than a couple times.
Make it 20GB and ya might have something.

$59 per month? Pass!

I like it.

As Carpooling gains popularity I can see the other three/four members of a ride hoping on to take care of some work issues or just browsing.

I use the nets' regularly on the train. sometimes I take the bus, which is a huge unproductive waste of two hours to get in/out of town.

I guess alot of the common folk don't have enough i-business to worry about toting their portables (minus phone) all over the place.

I have this with my HTC Touch

I have the Sprint SERO plan with HTC touch. I know the plan is gone but many have it.

I recently played World of Warcraft in the car on my laptop using my phone on a 2 hour long trip. Only dropped connection once and pings were actually in the low 100ms.

This seems like the same thing to me.

Stupid.

I already pay $15/mo for 3G unlimited on my cell phone from ATT. So, I can tether my laptop when I need it. What's so hard about it? Why do I have to pay another carrier more money?

Unless I was the passenger or had the thing picking up emails for reading later, this is a big waste, imho. Though I liked the school bus or commercial transit idea as a 'convenience' where they don't charge for it.

Last time I stayed at a hotel that charged for wireless, I used my phone instead. Have to stop staying at Hilton owned chains...unless I get a gratis on the connection.

WiFi is free in Hilton Lobbies. You only pay for use from your room.

Re: Stupid.

True, but I don't necessarily feel social and may wish to surf in my underroos.... and my phone gets 1.5mB.....and I don't have to concern myself with someone *new* collecting my surfing info.

Um, voice automated internet?

Why wouldn't this be a good idea?

Voice automated internet?

Imagine communicating with other drivers by contacting them thru mic, checking news channels by telling the os to acces news, checking email and having it read by voice, etc.

Anything can be good if someone isn't too dumb to not think outside the box.

Honestly, paying a fee per month to be able to tell a driver who can't see you in his/her blindspot exactly where you are would pay for itself in less accidents.

With all this said, I doubt my ideas will be implemented. I only said these to give people an idea that this type of idea would be excellent in the right hands.

Actually its already been implemented to quite an extent. With software like AIVMS (an artificial intelligence for carpc's and home theater PC's), you can even do a web search just by asking the AI for the info. It reads email, and has real time traffic and weather reporting by voice. Its similar to Fords' SYNC system in that you can play songs using simple voice command. It also provides voice command control of a PC interfaced HD Radio tuner.

Not a bad idea

I don't think this is all that bad of an idea. If you think it's going to increase accidents, hasn't cell phone usage already taken care of that stat? People have data plans on their phones, so pretty much the same thing. They can turn over and look at their laptop as much as they can whip out their blackberry and check their email or shoot a text.

As an internet radio broadcaster, I'm seeing possibilities. Perhaps this is an easy way for people to literally tune in "on the road", just like traditional radio.

Traffic

How about live traffic across the web to your car, to be combined with GPS to route you quicker. Your car can send your location and find traffic for your spot and route you around bottlenecks?
