Atlanta's most recent monthly sales tax revenues are down 14 percent from the same period last year, city officials reported Wednesday.
The city collected about $8.3 million in May from its sales tax. In May 2007, Atlanta collected nearly $9.7 million.
The money is used to help pay for the city's daily operations.
City officials said Wednesday they will be more conservative in spending.
Mayor Shirley Franklin earlier this month laid off 78 city workers, abolished 112 vacant positions and closed a fire station in the city's West End neighborhood to fill a budget gap
