SightSpeed working out the bugs to provide an application
10:30AM Sunday Mar 09 2008 by KathrynV
tags: business · wireless · bandwidth · VoIP
Apple announced recently that it would not block third party developers from creating VoIP over Wi-Fi solutions on the iPhone and iPod Touch. However, they noted that the solutions have to work over Wi-Fi and not through the cellular network. This may make sense to VoIP developers anyway because the bandwidth limitations of the cell network make it difficult to develop VoIP on that platform. One company that has made some progress in VoIP development for the iPhone is SightSpeed. They don't have something to offer just yet, though. They are currently facing difficulties because they are a video chat service, not just a voice service, and they have found that the placement of the camera on the iPhone hinders their engineers from full development of their application. They’re working on that issue and hoping to be one of the third party developers that sees success in moving their VoIP offerings to the iPhone.

Re: proprietory apple

Although apple is party responsible for the shortcomings of the IPhone, but I'd blame ATT this time around.

You can't do VOIP over an anemic EDGE network. Now if Apple would have gone with Sprint, we would have already been using VoIP.

Even my 2 year old PPC6700 phone can do 800-1.1mbit. The most I've seen on edge is 130k... now that's sad.

Re: proprietory apple

Exactly, Windows Mobile is a proper OS (lets not go there) that doesn't get locked down at the whim of each carrier. I'm going to guess (don't know these too well) that Symbian and Palm also are proper OSes with open APIs which aren't arbitrarily limited by phone manufacturers or cell carriers.

Re: proprietory apple

hahahah

Dude... check this out...
I've been a sprint customer for 11 years. I have 3 sprint phones under my account. I have an ATT crackberry from work which I pulled its SIM card from and popped it in an 8gig iPhone I picked up from my coworker for 200 bucks.

More so... I have a verizon data card in my work backpack. The only network I don't get to play with is T-Mo's.

I asked a buddy of mine to lend me try his tmo sim on my iphone... i had to get near the window to get signal... so T-mo's crap to me.

You don't need a lot of bandwidth for voice. 5-10K tops.

Of course, because the iPhone is not a real phone, doesn't have a real OS or real API's. Guess all that stuff is fake.

Why exactly do they want you to pay hundreds of dollars for something and then not let you do whatever you want with it.. What does it hurt them to let you do what you want with it??

But but but.... my ughPhone is cute, even though it can't do anything.

I think it is funny since people with real phones have had the ability to use VoIP over the WiFi and even the cellular connection for quite sometime!

I am going to assume that you have not programmed in the iPhone's API. I spent this weekend doing it and it is a full version of OS X with the new UIKit that supports fully animated views, layers, transparency, access to the Address Book API, access to the accelerometers, OpenGL or Quartz for drawing, and an iPhone simulator.

You develop in Objective-C on Xcode just as you do for desktop apps. The full Cocoa frameworks are available as well as the full OpenBSD layer.

As of now, you have to programmatically develop the interface elements of window, views, animations, buttons, sliders, switches, and there is a full touch events API for getting all the various combinations of multi-touch actions. Interface Builder will be supported in the final version and will make constructing the interface many times easier.

But its illegal to use that API to its fullest extent.

Since they don't like the placement of the iPhone's cam...

Maybe they could make an add-on camera that plugs into the iPhone to allow their video service to work how they want to?

They should do that. You could attach bar code scanners, RFID scanners etc etc...

They've already shown that the SDK has *not* allowed access to the dock connector. So, until that happens, no add-on devices for the iPhone/iPod Touch.

Re: Since they don't like the placement of the iPhone's cam...

Which would make a VOIP solution for the Touch useless, since there would need to be a dock attachment for a microphone...

iPhone already has a microphone. All this company needs is to make a separate camera that its software could interface with.

IPhone haters????

lots of IPhone haters.....

Sounds like a niche market, I could be wrong though. (VoIP over WiFi............)

I agree, YES apple should have it.

But the IPhone is sooo much better in many other ways.

I have an 8525 from cingular/AT&T. Excellent phone/mobile computer. But my wife's IPhone internet ability is sooooo much greater. (and associated applications)

The phone you pick is EXTREMELY dependent on the tasks you want to do. I know many BlackBerry users who will never switch. I like my 8525, and the related "tilt", for what it does. I love the IPhone's internet and preloaded "maps" (with directory assistance, and directions)

Yes, you can download the applications to make your phone's work like an IPhone....but really..............................

Not sure about the US, but here in Europe, many ISPs allow you to use their triple play service over Wifi, when you're at home. Basically, they provide an SIP service that you can access over WiFi. This way, you still use your cool cellphone, with your addressbook, etc..., but don't use your cell plan minutes.

Some ISPs have taken this further, and allow you to roam and use the WiFi signal of any other user of the same ISP when you're not home. Of course, the SIP traffic goes through a separate WiFi channel, so you can't authenticate or see the other user's data WiFi channel.

So there would be a nice market if someone can make an SIP client, considering that iPhone purchasers here most likely have one of those triple play services.

The iPhone will continue to be CRAP until they come out with a 30/60 gig model and NOT tethered to AT&T Wireless. 8 gig just makes it a POS and add AT&T and it makes it a truly worthless POS.

phone hardware

I also think that the hardware in the phone makes a difference. I like many people tended to get the freebies or up to mid-level phones and that always seemed to lead me to not like the service. I used a RAZR on Tmobile and that sucked. I switched back to AT&T after many years away and bought the new RAZR2. Wow what a differnence. The 3G service is fantastic and I stuck with a Moto since I used their software (moto phone tools) to sync with Exchange I wanted the same functionality. Also, a side benefit is that I can use my RAZR2 as a modem without having to pay for the data service because the moto software allows functionality and the AT&T software doesnt. I've tested the speed using my laptop with VPN on (work pc) out camping and could pull between 500 - 1.5Mbps. In town, I consistently pull in towards the higher end. Additionally, the RAZR2 itself as a web browser and TV service is really good. The screen isnt huge but it works well and comes in handy to keep the kids happy. Muppets, Disney and all the stuff comes with the service so they can watch shows off the phone. Quite frankly I tried both the IPHONE and the RAZR2 and other than the screen sizes I think the R2 is a better phone...at least for me.

So having used Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile..I think AT&T has started to pull their head out their rear and should continue to keep doing well. Don't get me wrong as I dumped ma bell 5 or 6 years ago because the phones sucked, the service sucked and customer service sucked. I jumped over to T-Mobile for a few years and was happy except my house was in the middle of a low signal zone so that made it sucky at home and traveling was ok as long as I was near an Interstate or major city. Verizon wasn't any better than AT&T at least for me in my area. I've used LG, Nokia and Ericsson as perferred the Nokia when I was on T-mobile, LG when I was on Verizon and just plain dont like the Ericssons at all.

They don't need a new camera.....

Just a mirror (they could flip the picture in software) or some sort of prism.
