And the iPhone gets a price drop...
(old news - 04:40PM Wednesday Sep 05 2007)
tags: business · wireless · hardware · Mac
You may have heard that a small California company by the name of Apple has released a suite of new iPods, including a fatter iPod Nano, a beefier 160GB iPod Classic and a new iPod dubbed iPod Touch. There's ample discussion in our Macintosh forums about the new features of each.

Click for full size
We mention this because the Touch integrates Wi-Fi (802.11b/g, not n), and is essentially an iPhone without the phone. It comes in 8GB and 16GB flavors, and costs $299 and $399, respectively. The device comes with a browser and makes use of the new Wi-Fi Apple store, which was also launched today.

We also mention the launch because apparently Apple has discontinued the 4GB iPhone (on clearance for $299). Apple also dropped the price of the 8GB version $200 from $599 to $399, annoying some early adopters.

Tuaw notes that if you purchased an iPhone in the last 14 days you're due a refund in accordance with the Apple store return policy. Also, some credit cards will refund the difference in price for items purchased within 60 days. If none of that works, you can always just call Apple and beg and/or yell.

Glad I...

...waited to get an iPhone. Actually, I'll probably keep using my Verizon service and swing for one of those touch iPods. But they'll come down in price eventually too so I'll hold off, yet again, and use my trusty going-on-three-years-old Nano.

iPod Touch

This would be pretty nice, as my brick of a phone suits me just fine, but I like just about every other feature of the iPhone (besides it being locked, but that's fixed now, isn't it?

The boost for their egos was why they had to be the 1st to get the iPhones. It wasn't mostly about the product. It was more like "look at me", I got the latest, hottest toy. And $200 for that ego boost is cheaper than the cost of the psychologist they really need.

My phone broke a week prior to the iphone release... I would've bought a cheapola phone and gotten the iphone for $200 bucks less had I know they would cut the price so much. Historically apple never has.

This is true. Very true. But then that doesn't address the issue of hyping an overpriced product and then cutting its price 30% in well under 90 days while telling your early buyers to bugger off, now does it?

Saunter over to ATM and watch some of the regulars (who didn't buy but glad-handed everyone that did) now talk pure trash to their brethren complaining about a 30% price drop just a bit more than two months post-launch.

It was fine for the stock holders to encourage the lines when they formed, and yet somehow it's also OK now to chide the buyers as "buttmonkeys" AFTER they've been screwed for doing what they encouraged them to do in the first place!

Apple Inc. has become a window into everything wrong with our outsourced identity, cult of personality, Chinese gadget, stock-driven consumer society.

Read a few threads in 'All Things Macintosh' and witness what can only be described as totally pathological neo-consumerist behavior.

Apple should have added a MicroSD slot to the Touch. That way the storage could be expanded when needed.

Nano = Ugly

Oh no, I waited way to long to get an iPod Nano in black. The new wider version is pure ugly. I liked the skinny black sleek looking one.

I can't believe they added width to it just so you can watch video on it. Excuse me, but if that is true, what is the "classic" aka "video" for??? Who would want to watch video on such a small screen?

Well, now I'm going to have to talk my wife into letting me get a "touch".

Check out the VA Canteen Service.

Another place to look, if you have one, at a VA Hospital. All of the hospitals, but not the out patient clinics, have a VA Canteen Store. These stores have Ipods, While I have not paid any attention I believe the Cheyenne VA's canteen store has a couple of the old style Nano's. Anyone can shop at these stores, no sales tax, and you can order just about any from their master catalog. I see they have a 4% to 8% discount on Apple computers and Ipods, the Ipod touch 16 gig is $375.00. The Iphone 8 gig is $399.00. I am interested in the 160gig classic it is going for $328.00. Shipping is free, and you can have Free laser engraving on all IPod models, and they have free shipping for any purchase above 50 bucks.

Will Touch kill iPhone sales?

I'd think ATT is pissed about the iPod Touch as it would hurt iPod sales and moreover, bring fewer users to ATT from other carriers. Now users of other carriers just get the Touch and stick with their carrier.

That said, I wouldn't get the Touch as that's a lot to pay for not having an SD slot. 16GB SDHC cards are coming soon and 32GB will come sooner than you think.

I'll stick with my Treo phone, which has EVDO, replaceable battery, SDHC slot, bluetooth and plays most any video/audio codec.

You are not the only one that thinks the iPod Touch will hurt iPhone sales. These ZDNet columnists thinks so too.

Apple’s iPod Touch will cannibalize the iPhone. My hunch is that most folks that bought the iPhone keep the phone part as an afterthought. Take a Wi-Fi enabled iPod, toss in a browser and the differences between the iPod and iPhone stop at the phone.

What’s really notable about the iPod Touch is that it totally reverses conventional thinking. When the iPhone launched the idea was that the iPhone would cannibalize iPod sales. As this plays out it’s going to be quite the opposite.

You're not alone. I'm sitting on a 20GB and was only planning to upgrade if they offered an iPod Touch with at least 40GB of storage....I think they've missed a key demographic by fracturing their target market, or they're crunching numbers somehow where I don't see the logic....

Well first off, its flash, not hard drive, something that Apple eventually wants to move all its iPod storage capacity to. Unless you're willing to pay somewhere around 900 dollars for a 40GB iPod Touch.

A Touch with a hard drive then? An SD card slot?

The Touch is worthless to me without increased storage....and the 3rd gen iPod I have is working too well to justify buying an 80GB or 160GB model....

Sure, if harddrives can ever come in anything much less than 8 millimeters which is the thickness of the iPod touch with more than 16 GB capacity. Unfortunately there isn't.

Mostly Dissappointed..

- The nano didn't get a 16GB capacity update I was hoping for, and the 2G nano was plenty small to get that sucker even smaller is obsurd and to add video to a screen that is about the size of my thumb is a waste.
- The shuffle didn't get anything but a color change, was hoping for a 2GB model and some more STYLISH colors..the new colors other than red are pretty hideous if you ask me.
- The iPod Touch which in theory would be the dominate "video" player doesn't have the capacity to play much video, 16GB? C'Mon. Right now until flash gets up in capacity I think it would have been wiser to offer this in HD form.

The only iPod that got a good update to me is the iPod Classic, freakin 40 HRS of Audio and 7HRs of Video is awesome and the 160GB MONSTER capacity. This is the only one I'd consider upgrading to.

I'm still miffed at the price drop and this is the last time I'm going to be a first buyer on anything Apple. After buying tons of Apple hardware in the past, never again will I buy when something new from Apple comes out!! I'm sure a lot of other buyers feel we have been had by the greedy Apple corporate people. I could understand if it had been out six months but less than 60 days from the hype announcement really frosts me to say the least!! Fourteen day price protection is a crock.

Expect me to buy the new iPods is not gonna happen. I'll wait for a price drop or buy it used on eBay.

I'm not a happy camper!!

Looks like the iPod is a MMP (multimedia player) instead of a DAP (digital audio player) now, looks like the only one thats a DAP is the shuffle.

Think of iPod Touch as a portable web browser with music

Actually, the iPod Touch might see quite a few sales as a light small portable WiFi browser for use in your backyard while sitting in the hammock. Listen to the music and browse the stock market reports and read email while sunning yourself. Easier than using a larger laptop.

Re: Think of iPod Touch as a portable web browser with music

Oh its going to sell and probably sell well I don't doubt that. In fact I think it may cannibalize from the iPhone sales.

I just don't quite get what market its aiming for, the iPod Classic is going to hit the fanatics the most (the ones with massive audio/video libraries) because the capacity is so big.

The nano is going to probably still be the #1 seller for typical users that don't need to have everything with them at all times and want to listen to music and I guess the few that'll actually view video on the 5mm screen (sarcasm).

The shuffle will hit people that need a companion to the iPod classic that don't want to ruin the HD based player when exercising or for people that want a NO FRILLS music player.

The iPod Touch? Whats the market for it? It lacks serious capacity to be really considered for video playing..it lacks any buttons making it a pain for music playing on the go..having to whip that sucker out everytime to change tracks is going to be annoying. The Wi-Fi though neat at what point do you really need the internet when you are out and about? Not very often just to be like "hey look at me!". The iPod Touch fails in my opinion, it doesn't look like anything more than a show off device.

Re: Think of iPod Touch as a portable web browser with music

What's the market for it? Well, I am. I have an old (3G) 15GB iPod that's nearing the end of its life, and I'd rather go ahead and get a new one rather than pay the overpriced battery replacement fees. I haven't even managed half of its capacity, and I'd watch some videos but not huge ones, which makes the 16GB capacity attractive to me.

Not saying I'll buy one, but it does get me thinking about it. It'll be worth some consideration later, with my Xmas money (hopefully).

Sort of like any other PDA, except this one is called Apple and iPod... *ohhh*, fancy.

I got mine for about $80 and have infinite storage capabilities, I could match the 16 gigs for a lot cheaper. The only thing Im lacking is the sexyness and being free of the stylus.

Wait for someone to come out with one that connects to the dock connector like they did with the old iPods. The only hard part would be getting the software to use it.

Can you say brand fatigue

Set your watch, because the greed of stockholders will drive jobby-jobs to an inevitable market saturation point untenable to a product image built on anything BUT ubiquity. Everyone and their mother owning a Mac will act as a giant Windex-soaked rag and wipe the sheen right off those one and two grand polished Apples sooner than you can say "upgraded teh video card."

I've always thought it a house of cards -- their entire 'anti-' false perception thing -- and I run Mac exclusively. You can't be different and sexy and anti-big brother AND make all your products in China; run attack commercials against your only true competitor, and grow your stock at the holder's behest and hold onto the same 1984 anti-establishment image you so carefully crafted to sell the stuff in the first place.

It's a catch-22 not even snobby-fobs can BS his way out of. Oh, they'll be riding a wave for awhile, that you can't deny. But it will be a quick one unless prices come down considerably or new markets allow the computer arm to stay aloft the Dells and HPs of the world in price & perception. Apple, like any high-end product line -- real or perceived -- has built an image partly by keeping the riff-raff from having seats. What's Henry "I just spent 2 grand on an iMac" Highclass going to say when Larry "trailer park" Lowclass spent $900 and change on a slower model with less CPU that looks exactly the same except in size?

Do the words "F this" have any meaning for you, Apple stock holders?

My old iPod still works just fine....

Ultimately, the reason I have an iPod is to play music. I never play games on it, I don't use the calendar, and I don't want to.

I have what I believe to be a G3 iPod (just the click wheel, no buttons across the top, 30 GB with Firewire support.

Had it for 3 years now, never came anywhere NEAR to filling it up, and never had any problems with it.

I see no need to purchase a new one just because Apple came out with the latest "whiz bang" thing.

Then again, I always thought it was cool to have stuff that was a few years old, and taken care of, then the latest and greatest.

And of course, those things are paid for

Agreed.

Latest isn't always the greatest either, look at the iPhone..it lacks what the MOST basic of iPods (Shuffle) can do..no manual management. Who knows how well these new models are.

16 GB is enough for me...for now

I used to try to put everything on it. I drive about a total of 1 1/2 hours to work and back. I just need enough content for the drive and gym. I dont need a weeks worth of content for one day. I try to make good use of the smart playlist and it works out for me.

Well this is nice for me though. I finally got around to saving enough money for an Ipod and I was going to buy the 80 Gig. Now I can get the 160 Gig and not worry about running out of room for a long time.
