Phorm's "Webwise" targeted ad technology uses data provided by ISPs to deliver targeted ads to each user, though specific companies can choose to
opt out their entire domain, prohibiting Webwise from using user activity on the website to sell ads. "I can confirm that we have emailed Webwise requesting we 'opt-out' for all of our domains," Amazon UK managing director Brian McBride tells the user, who e-mailed the company out of concern for his privacy. Privacy advocates last month asked Amazon, AOL, eBay, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! to opt out of the technology, which Phorm hopes to someday deploy in the United States.
