| Re: Been talked about before Aye. Enhanced, yes, but, sometimes oversaturated photos have real use - this one, for example, does a great job at showing texture and chemical changes in the moon at different areas. That, in itself, has real use in astronomy, it's not just a pretty picture (though, it *is* pretty) | |

Lots of professional astronomy shots are enhanced, even from Hubble. False color images, and so one. | Re: Been talked about before Pay attention, I said nice for desktop but useless for actual astronomy work. It is enhanced beyond just color saturation. It is a composite of 5 different photos including back ground, star clusters etc.
So it is as stated useless for astronomy as the conditions DO NOT exist in the real world.

The DI forum has been nothing but professional IMO. The occasional Nikon vs. Canon jabbing is humorous, but not too over the top.

| Re: Um no subject just an opinion First, congrats to NoelC for making the front page. I came upon it the day he posted it here, and must say I was impressed. I'm not someone who uses anything other than a solid color for my desktop, but when I saw that shot, I gave it a try right away, and it will probably stay there for quite some time.
As to what other people have said about the DI forum itself, I won't claim to either frequent it or really know very much about the subject. However other than one or two slightly heated disagreements (which happens in every forum), I've been pretty impressed by it. Does it tend to lean towards the "DSLR Mafia" so to speak? Sure, why wouldn't it? Most anybody that gets real enjoyment from photography, or any other type of hobby, wants to get the best equipment they can. And that means DSLR in this case. I've also never seen a negative comment towards anyone using a point and shoot camera just for using one. If you've ever seen some of the photos from the regulars there, they do have some sort or right if they feel "better" than some others (not that I've ever really seen anything of the sort), because they are! And I've seen them patiently give advice to people asking for help who were very obviously very new to photography, so I don't know where this apparent snob metality comes from.

| If you're basing your opinion on this thread - »Just a few shots from the backyard - that all DI Forum members are "camera snobs", I think that's a pretty broad brush stroke to paint all of us as snobs. DI Forum members have as many helpful and friendly folks as any other forum. I'll be the first to admit that there are probably a few that come across as arrogant, but again, no more than any other forum. But hey, that's your opinion and as you stated in another thread of yours, opinions are like ***holes, everyone has one. Since we're expressing our opinions, my opinion is that you got your feelings hurt and you're lashing out like a five-year-old. Time to grow up, don't you think? | |

| Thats really cool but... This is amazing |
Noel has really high end equipment and is good at post processing. I would expect nothing less from him.
I took this picture with an el-cheepo 1.2 megapixel HP Photosmart 215 point and shoot camera hand held up to the eyepeice of a small telescope.

| The Twinkle Speaking from ignorance here, but does that twinkling star (the one flaring at 4 o'clock) bother anyone else? I thought stars twinkled only through the atmosphere here, and that from space (as the shot would otherwise appear, in part because it's an admitted composite) we'd only see bright dots.
As it stands, while the photo is stunningly beautiful, the twinkle makes that part appear "off" to me, like one of those drawings of angels or something. I think I'd prefer the gorgeous moon shot alone without the stars sandwiching.
Raining on a parade...

| Re: The Twinkle Yes I know; he used his earthbound telescope. But that's not my point.
He purposely matted together separate images of starfields and moon shots to achieve this composite photo. The result, due to the great detail, looks like a close up of the moon that one might see from a lunar orbiter. Yet there's that cheesy (no pun intended) twinkle sitting there on the side. It just looks out of place to me.

| | | B Premium,MVM join:2000-10-28 | Re: The Twinkle You know what, I've changed my mind. It's not just the Twinkle. The whole star field background looks fake to me (regardless of how real the original photo was). I definitely would prefer the moon composite by itself.
