The fact that you have an entity such as Walmart thats willing to take a loss in one store (by selling products at a loss) in order to starve out competition around it is detrimental the community as a whole. Unemployment rates rise, as do taxes to pay for those individuals. Not to mention what this does to the established municiple tax base once these businesses call it quits. Municiple services get cut or taxes get raised somewhere else. All so you can shop at the worlds largest Chinese dime store!
China owns I believe 30% of our national deficit. By shopping at Walmart, you contribute to their financial abilty to by our debt!

Saying you can get one item at Walmart cheaper than another item anywhere else, even though they are not the same item, is disingenuous.
Walmart doesn't have cheaper prices. Walmart just has cheaper crap.

| Right. Evergreen Plaza, by my quick research, has not been doing well for a few years, and apparently that Christmastime fire last year helped nothing. Wal-mart compels no one to shop there, especially in the Chicago area.
And in 1952, I'm sure the Luddites like you were mourning the loss of the general store and the A&P to this big concrete monolith called the "Evergreen Plaza." Luddites never change.

| Re: another. Luddism comes in many forms, and many Luddites use the Internet. You obviously don't oppose all development and technological change - just certain ones. If it were up to you, we'd all still be buying our buggy whips at Ma and Pa's general store (which had great health benefits, you know).
Seriously though, I've been to areas that are still big-box store less (portions of the UP come to mind). Trust me, a Wal-mart would be a vast improvement in those areas over the mangy local grocery store with the owner's dog slinking around the grimy interior's poor selection of week-old produce.
> Are you a Luddite for yearning for the days when Michigan had an reputable automotive industry, or do you embrace the overseas vehicle invasion?
I think propping them up is wrong. They've had many opportunities to survive and prosper, and their managements have repeatedly pissed them away. (Ann Arbor has few Big 3 auto jobs). I believe it is Toyota building a huge facility not too far away from me either.
So tell me, why does Evergreen deserve a bailout and a forced shuttering of Wal-mart? Are they not letting the mallwalkers in at the Wal-mart or something?

| Re: another. In just the way that you think propping the big 3 up is wrong, I think that allowing a business to come in monopolize business via undercut pricing (at a loss) is wrong. Listen, the village Evergreen Park received several million from the Walmart Corp as an incentive to allow their store to be built. This money went to the repaving of roads (w/asphalt)87th street and 95th street. Also new asphalt sidewalks were poured. Walmart wanted this site because of its close proximity to the City of Chicago (right across the street). Walmart went in with pricing thats below wholesale, forcing local small businesses in both EP and Chicago out of business. The village thought Walmart would "actually bring more traffic"...they were wrong. The Walmart Corp is keeping this store in place specifically to kill other local businesses in Chicago. The ones they kill in EP are just considered collateral damage.
Now take my distaste for Walmart aside, and think about the small businesses in and around the mall that will be asking you, joe taxpayer, for unemployment benefits. Plus, now you have the Walmart employees hitting up uncle sam for medical benefits.
Walmart means death to local business! And by the way, those roads couldn't stand up to the winters, so they need repaving again. -- The "Lifetime" channel is responsible for 83% of all divorces...Robert Ginty

It happened that way when a Home Depot opened up in my neighborhood. | Re: Already there As AT&T puts it, "It's easy to beat cable"
AT&T offers a fairly large HD lineup (45+), with a ton more supposedly being added by year end (rumor is, first week in November). Time Warner LA had a pretty pathetic HD lineup. They promised 9 more by mid-year, but missed that target. We finally got them this month, and after all that waiting, the lineup is still nowhere close to what U-verse has.
U-verse also has the multi-room HD DVR that records 4 channels at once, which we love.
DirecTV is still the better choice for HD lovers, but if you want a DVR and multiple rooms, there's equipment to buy, and long term contracts to sign.
Time Warner is still struggling to get 15/2 up in Los Angeles. They seem to have more areas upgraded now, but a lot of LA is still 10/1, which U-verse beats with 10/1.5.
I think Time Warner will eventually have the better product, but its taking them a long time to get their act together. U-verse is getting improvements at a much brisker pace. -- AT&T U-Hearse Your funeral. Delivered.

It is a matter of demographics and statistics. I have here in front of me articles that prove that +80% of walmart's customers are low income. You can google a bit to get the idea.
