AT&T has discussed their "three screen initiative" for some time -- or the idea of tying tightly together the TV, Internet and mobile phone. That integration will also involve femtocells and a single voice-plan that covers both mobile and home phone lines, but it will also tie the Apple iPhone to U-Verse service, according to Reuters. Hinted at applications involve visual voicemail on your TV screen, downloading shows from the U-Verse DVR to the iPhone, and the ability to use the iPhone as a U-Verse remote control. Expect the first wave of these new integrated services to drop before the end of the year.

That's great, but can we at least start with some basic iPhone support first? The current cellular "U-verse enabled" TV features go through MEdia Net, which doesn't work on the iPhone! You can browse to Yahoo and the DVR scheduling program works OK but could be better.

The irony about all of it is that the TV platform is a Microsoft product. Windows Mobile based phones would be a much more logical choice to get all of the integration features..

Media net is a POS. I am so glad to not have that on this phone.

I guess the Apple/Microsoft bridge will occur somewhere (Bill Gates and Seindfeld commericals are horrible). AT&T needs to complete its infrastructure before attempting to deploy something on top of it. -- Canada = Hollywood North

I'm sure they've got a team of mobile programmers working on the iPhone app. I doubt it's taking much away from their other deployment resources. If we had to wait for AT&T perfect their U-Verse and cellular networks, they'd never get around to releasing any new features.

From what I can see, the dropped call issue has been vastly improved on Apple's/iPhone's end with the recent firmware updates, but AT&T desperately needs to improve their 3G service around here. And yes, it's ridiculous that U-verse doesn't offer VOIP service in Los Angeles. They have it just 90 miles north in freshly-deployed Bakersfield.

People might normally switch ISPs or TV providers willy nilly, but everyone I know who has an iPhone is pretty attached to it. This gives customers a reason to stick with Uverse.

I wish the other companies would do that with their DVR's.

At least I still have my networked Series2 TiVo w/Lifetime Sub. I'll just hook it up to a non-DVR box and go nuts.

But.. I suppose the **AA is going to bitch and moan because of this. They seem to always hate new technologies.

I agree. I cant see them being open to people downloading content off their DVR's for use on another device unless there is some sort of DRM associated with it. I am not sure how ATT is going to coordinate that with Apple, as they already use their own form of DRM for content purchased via iTunes. This could get interesting folks!

I have kind of heard about this.

The Iphone will supposedly (rumors that I have heard) grab a RG IP address (like a wireless computer) and will send a signal to the STB from the back side (LAN side) if that makes a difference. I have heard a rumor where you could use the Iphone to set up say a show to be viewed on another STB, and the STB's can be labled for "bedroom STB" and such like that. Another one I heard is where you could select content from the guide to play on a tv, so say you have kids to babysit, you could start them out with say the movie "lion king" then move to say "barnyard" basically line programming up for them to watch. From what I understand if it can be done on the computer the Iphone should be able to as well, and supposedly the Iphone will mesh with the VoIP.
