May, May not expand its use outside of Alaska...

AT&T has chosen LTE as their fourth generation wirless flavor of choice, but they aren't completely ignoring WiMax. Through their Alascom subsidiary the telco has been offering symmetrical 1Mbps WiMax service for $19.95 a month in portions of Alaska. The company is using Alvarion's IEEE 802.16e-based WiMAX gear to bring broadband to select areas where DSL isn't available for whatever reason (snow, bears, marauding Canadians). Over the summer the telco stated that WiMax was a "top candidate" for offering broadband to rural markets. From Unstrung:

"WiMax is currently not a primary focus, but our trials and deployments to date have shown that WiMax does have potential as an alternative for delivery of fixed broadband service. WiMax is well-suited for deployment in challenging environments like Alaska, where landline-based solutions may not always be practical."
Given AT&T also has some 22 2.3 GHz licenses covering some Southern states, it's possible they could offer the same option to some rural communities there, though AT&T has remained consistently vague about future WiMax plans outside of Alaska.

$20 is for 384kbps, not 1Mb, unless I'm reading it wrong

said by AT&T :
* 19.95 applies to 384 Kbps speed bundled with local and long distance. Faster speeds are available
Speeds up to 2Mb is available.

If it is in fact 1000/1000 for 20 bucks, it's is a smokin' deal IMO...no contract, no install, self install, portable...

AT&T is dumping Wimax in Nevada

We have had AT&T Wimax here in Pahrump, NV (outside of Las Vegas) for the last two years, and they are pulling the plug on it as of 12/31/08, replacing it with DSL. AT&T has been busy adding RT's all around town. All I can say after having both, is that under AT&T implementation, there is no comparison, Wimax was very, very slow, but it still did beat the alternative...

Re: AT&T is dumping Wimax in Nevada

If you had WiMAX for the past 2 years it wasn't the IEEE 802.16e-based WiMAX gear but was based on the older 802.16d "fixed" standard.
