If there are too many defective iPhones in one area they would have the effect of a denial of service attack which would affect any 3G device nearby.

| Re: How many devices affected? From what I've seen and read, it's affected the entire network. Right after the iphone 3g launch, there were complaints of degraded data performance in a lot of areas of the country, even areas where ATTM's 3g buildout is at its most robust.
Of course, it's very difficult to sort out whether this was attributable to the iphone's allegedly passing unusual/poorly modulated data requests to the network, or whether it was just a matter of the huge influx of users (device specifics aside) that just overtaxed the network. Many people seem to think that ATTM was not prepared for the massive increase on market demands due to so many 3g users coming online all at once, so even if the iPhone has unique issue there are still underlying issues of underprovisioning of the network that have contributed to some of the problems.
But from my observation of general attitudes among iPhone users, a lot of people have had suspicions that the phone's performance, particularly on UMTS, is suspect, and people have been looking for an explanation.
So when things like this come out there is a tendency to give them some credence. You have to recall that there have been other, more solidly attributed reports that the iPhone has some radio issues, there were some people who tested it on the European 2100 MHz 3g band said that its 3g RF performance was below standard to such a degree that it probably should not have been certified. | |

It's really difficult to say given the mutual finger-pointing between ATTM and Apple that has been going on behind the scenes, and also given Apple's general practice of being very vague in release-noting their updates.
I hadn't heard that another update is pushing out in Sept. What is that one intended to fix? Has Apple said? | |

Among the data-phone newbs who seem to be the majority of iPhone users, not so much complaining, because they don't really have a base of experience to assess its performance on the network.
Then, too, though, even among ATTM data vets, people who have moved to iPhone from a smartphone platform, there's some considerable tendency to affix blame more on ATTM than on Apple, or at least to split it between the two. It's an open secret, really, that ATTM's 3g network is spottier than Swiss cheese, 'more bars in more places' adverts notwithstanding, so a lot of people have seem to have come to the (perverse?) conclusion that the iPhone has done us all a favor by exposing ATTM's network weaknesses and putting them on the spot to improve their network. | |

Given this context this sort of 'on background'-based story gains a bit more credibility than it otherwise might, I think. | |

The bottom line is that there is absolutely no "hemorrhaging" going on in any way; not in sales, not in support, and not in general. Sure, people are complaining in forums like these about the 3G issue, but thats where it ends. As mentioned by another poster, its still fairly hard to get an iphone and all stores still advise you arrive at 7am the day of a shipment to guarantee one. Heck, the Apple store here in NYC was giving out vouchers last week so that people waiting in line the next day would be allowed the chance to purchase one. This is just typical BBR propaganda folks, dont read what you believe here.

Not true. The example I gave about getting vouchers was regarding the flagship Apple store at 57th Street and 5th Avenue (in New York City)!
