| Re: Typo? said by haamster :Half a million or half a billion? The 1/2 billion number is correct. The $4.5 to $5 million number later in the paragraph is the error.
EDIT: Karl has now corrected it.
That should have read $4.5 to $ 5 BILLION.

The top U.S. phone company said it expects total spending on the service from January 2007 through the end of 2008 to be between $4.5 billion and $5.0 billion, up $500 million from its previous outlook.

I guess Pacific Telephone predicted a development in this old orchard, and laid out the copper 8 years before the houses were even built.
(Not counting that the copper isn't really even 5 months old. Yet. All new when they conditioned the neighborhood for U-Verse. New than the old ATTBI digital coax which Comcast took over about three years ago.) -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum

| -coax is still the preferred method if install. IF the coax is not up to speed, then it more than likely will get replaced with cat5. -installs appear to be function of new employees and that time is dropping as they gain experience. -Had Uverse for about 18 months now, cant say i have had any problems that required rebooting the RG. While it is probably still work in progress, it has been quite stable. -patch/maint window has just not been a problem either. -Yeah there was a national outage, but that is the only time in the past year it has been down. Not a deal killer and still more reliable than my previous provider.
Overall I think most people here are not giving the service a fair shake. It far better than what it is made out to be on here.

| said by Rick :And then, sadly, and more sadly by the day..there is AT&T. Fiber to a vrad hanging off telephone polls at street level in Ct... All the VRADs I have seen in San José, California, are firmly planted on the ground. Mostly adjacent to B-Boxes; a couple adjacent to RTs.
...connected to ...lol..my god...that tired old crap that couldn't even get me a good phone signal in the last town i lived in. That line that couldn't even get me dsl at ANY of my last two address...and even metro ones at that. Doing fine with voice and DSL, here. Pro package; 3M/.5M. It has been as reliable as cable.
But NOW....you and others still promote this god awful crap as being a viable medium to not only bring that..but to ALSO bring TV and phone to people as well? I won't go that far; but it does seem to be working for the Japanese and Koreans. I am reasonably certain that their 100Mbps connections are VDSL bonded pair. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum

| Please... Stay the hell away from my neighborhood ATT!
I'd rather wait till a more competent company comes into my area providing more HD Streams.
I'm happy with my Dish Network (actually, by next week that will be DirecTV with 3 HD boxes!) =]
Granted, U-Verse won't hinder my TV, but it will hinder my internet access. Since U-Verse does not sync at the typical "Max Sync" that bell south uses. I will actually be feeling the overhead on my connection.
I'm happy with my 6.5 down

| Blame the falling dollar for this The bigger makers of equipment that support Project Lightspeed are European and they do not price their products in dollars that's for sure. I'm suprised it's just half a billion actually.
Still in order to provide advanced services they will have to do channel bonding on already flaky runs and they will spend billions of dollars of dealing with outside plant issues. People will find out when it rains their speeds go into the gutter. Hell in desert areas it's really bad when it rains.
Verizon is already reaping the benefits of their new fiber connections. They have 1/10th of the plant issues compared to their copper plant. Given enough time that will pay for a good chunk of the deployed network. -- Mac Chatter »www.macchatter.net

| U-Verse Had Uverse installed on the 31st,October I am I believe about 4000 feet away from the VRAD in a new development in Tracy, CA. The techs did an excellent job I already had cat 5 but they did run one Cat5e from my smart box to one of my rooms. took them two days to get it right but the service is great. Tv is far better than cable or dish except the HD on my 58 # plasma with U-Verse sometimes looks flat without any depth But I am pretty happy with it 3 receivers plus 6MB/1Mb internet service for $ 129.00 is far cheaper than comcast or dish. | |

| Re: U-Verse At $5 billion for 17 million "homes passed" that's around $300 per (potential) customer. That's actually not too bad. There are additional costs to make each connection -- including 1 or 2 guys doing a 4 or 5 hr install and the hardware that goes into the home.
At one point this was closer to $1000 per home passed, so this is a significant improvement.
It's still hard to figure the benefit to AT&T; this is definitely a long-term investment and several years before it pays off.
$130/mth less amortizing the hardware less amortizing the install costs less paying the programming for the TV content less paying Yahoo! for the Internet services ... it doesn't leave much room for "profit".
At 150,0000 customers so far, they must be looking at at least $20,000 per customer to date. This baby better scale big-time if they are ever to make back their investment.

| Can't convience anyone, don't care too. I don't like my Comcast service and I know someone else in my Condo that doesn't either. After fixing their router I told them about the fact that there is a VRAD on the same block as us and when the service goes live what it will bring.
I don't care if he gets the service or if people give it an fair look. I believe that ATT will not ditch this service no matter what unless they decided to go FTTH in which case the servcie will be either grandfathered in or converted first.
Without the possibility for a Dish, no real fear of the service being dumped and faster internet I've been ready to purchase it since I spotted it.
