AT&T Plans LTE for 2011
Trials Should Begin in 2010....
Speaking at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, AT&T's senior vice president of architecture and planning, Kris Rinne stated that the carrier hopes to be fully embracing LTE wireless broadband technology by 2011. AT&T had previously stated that the carrier would be milking current HSPA technology for as long as possible, and says they hoped to deploy 20Mbps HSPA release 7 sometime this year. However, AT&T's Rinne says AT&T is currently in a request for proposal (RFP) process for LTE vendors for LTE, and plans LTE trials in 2010 with commercial services targeted for mid-year 2011. Verizon is already engaged in limited trials.

What are they thinking.

Hell, they cannot even get 3G correct. Downtown Springfield is now experiencing problems with phones going to Edge, and Dead air when attempting to dial out. This has been reported by myself and others, but ATT does not care. Bad thing is, there is a huge number of users downtown M-F 7-5 in a 10 block area.

It comes down to were the phone company mindset, they dont have to care. But HSPA can do 4G speeds. Plus the difference between HSPA is a software update to LTE. Verizon is starting early because they have to rebuild there entire network from ANSI to MAP. If anything ATT can just sit back and wait for Verizon to catch up.

I would think they would have it together in Springfield since they have a call center over behind White Oaks Plaza..

The call center is not behind White Oaks Plaza, it is next to I-72 at the corner of IL-54/Wabash & I-72/US-36. Worked there 7 years ago, and all I can say is that they scraped the bottom of the barrel when they hired after I left. Most of the workers @ that call center are what I would classify as moving up from Micky D's & BK.

To me I think of it as behind there... You remember Amica Wireless Phone Service? They were a regional PCS company from 1998 thru 2001... I work for them as a Indirect Sales Manager in Central IL... US Cellular bought them up along with Primeco..

Ameca never had a call center in Springfield, nor Regional offices. Only a Retail outlet, and as for US Cellular buying them and Primeco, never happened. Primeco got ate up into Sprint, which in turn paid out for a whole lot of illegal tower installs. As for Ameca, they where divided between a whole bunch of carriers for the bandwidth that was sold.

Re: What are they thinking.

What are you talking about.. It was Amica Wireless and they had their offices in Iowa City, IA and yes USC bought them and also Primeco.. I was with Amica till the end... Sprint had nothing to do with them at all as Sprint is an Affiliate in Central IL (IPCS).. Look it up ... Please dont argue with a x-company man..

I miss my Navy days. I miss Lincoln Fest. I do not regret leaving Cingular and going to work for the state. My stress level has greatly dropped. As for Xanadoo, works great if you want an alternative to ATT or Comcast.

In Other News...

[SARCASM]
Yet in other news my provider, T-Mobile, announced they expect to complete their 3G rollout sometime by the middle of the next decade.

But...

...there are many areas that don't even have HSDPA yet. These companies seem so hell-bent on rolling out the newest tech that they neglect the current ones. I don't have a problem with them launching LTE, but it'd be nice if they hurried up and finished HSDPA/HSPA first. I'm in a county with around 120,000 people, and AT&T still only has EDGE here. Even T-Mobile has deployed 3G here, for crying out loud.

That is pretty much inexcusable. I thought you might be in one of the markets where they only have 10MHz, like Dothan, in which case they'd have no choice but to do a hard cut from 2G to 3G, but it turns out they have 35MHz there. (All PCS, but still!)

Are you talking about AT&T or T-Mobile. AT&T has both 850 and 1900 here.

You're right. Somehow I missed it when I was searching on the FCC's website. I must have failed to select both the cellular and PCS services.

That makes it even more ridiculous, that means they've got 60MHz there. Definitely no bandwidth issues to contend with there.

HSPA???

I travel all over the west and have never been able to get anything close to AT&T's advertised HSPA speeds. They really need to fix this before embracing some mythical wanna be technology.

Re: HSPA???

True dat. I'm able to get 2000/400 or more in town over my WMWiFiRouter-connected Sprint phone, and AT&T doesn't have 3G for a few dozen miles. The result: service that's comparable to 1xRTT.

Even when you're talking about their 3G service, I haven't seen their HSPA 3.6/1.8 break 1.5/800. Also, EvDO has better latency. Theoretically HSPA should be able to whip CDMA-based stuff (CDMA as opposed to WCDMA) into a pulp but it just ain't happening...

I have both an AT&T HTC Tilt and Sprint Treo 800W (EVDO Rev A).
I have experienced 500-900kbps on BOTH.
