Free broadband for six months with TV and voice....

AT&T this morning announced that the carrier is offering a new bundle promotion that gives consumers U-Verse broadband service free for six months if they also take U-Verse TV and either U-Verse VoIP or wireless phone service. According to the company, users have to sign up for at a U200 U-Verse TV package or above, or a Nation 450 plan or above to get the deal. At the moment the promotion is only available in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, but AT&T insists the deal will hit all U-Verse markets in short order.

Great news....

Now if they will just expand the coverage areas so I can get it, they will have another customer. I am just feeling like it won't be coming to me until next year sometime.

I know what you mean, I work for them and don't even know when/if we'll get U-Verse... I want my employee discount so bad..I have everything with Insight (except phone, I have an at&t cell and that's all I need); almost every cable channel (who needs Shotime) and 20 MBit internet service. I would be paying about ½ if U-Verse were here (with my employee discount).
I've even asked when/if U-Verse was coming to town and they told me that it's confidential.

I may be in the minority on this thread, but the AT&T U-verse technology doesn't interest me.

Re: Great news....

Can you get 12/1.5 or better on your internet service? If not, you shoulbe interested in U-Verse IMO. If so, you're right, no need to be interested in a stopgap technology.

I'm not so sure. Interleaved means increased latency and higher pings. I'm thinking regular DSL on fastpath would actually be better for a gamer.

I forget what the interleave delay on U-Verse is, but I think it isn't that much. Also, a solid backbone network is more important than a few ms at the first hop nowadays, unless of course you call 45ms "a few".

I'm on a 6/1 starter business plan with Comcast. My speedtest results are usually 20-25mb down and 2-5mb up.

IMO U-Verse is DSL wrapped in tinsel. AT&T wants to milk 100 year old technology for as long as people will take it. They seem to provide low quality pseudo HD. It seems the video interferes with internet bandwidth on U-Verse as they share.

If I wanted inferior and limited HD, and wanted inferior and limited internet access, on a company trying to sell ancient technology as new, then U-Verse could have an appeal.

Ye[, you're just about right there Now if they had some actually competitive speeds via VDSL2 I'd be taking a different tack but as it stands U-Verse is hard put to compete with DOCSIS 1.1, let along DOCSIS 3.

As long as AT&T remains cap free, they have an advantage with techies though. Sure, DOCSIS 3 will be faster, but if you can get cap free service on Uverse, its an advantage for AT&T.

Biz cable from most US providers is (and will remain for the foreseeable future) uncapped.

Also, U-Verse tried caps in Beaumont and Reno. Higher than TWC's tested caps and Cox's nominal ones, but lower than Comcast's.

Lets compare apples to apples here.

We are not talking about business lines. Most people are not going to pay more for a business line. We are also not talking about trials of caps. If we are, then we have to look at the trials of every cable/DSL provider. Comcast has tested lower caps in certain cities in the past just as an example.

Discount it all you want, my point still stands. As long as AT&T Uverse remains uncapped, they hold an advantage in the broadband marketplace.

Where did Comcast test lower caps than 250GB?

Also, AT&T has, again, established lower caps than Comcast in some test markets though they've snce repealed them.

Happened years ago when they were testing different cap tiers.

I think the key here is "repealed". Not really fair to bring up test caps to a statement that I made. Lets deal in what is going on here and now with what I said. If you want to refute it, then do so with facts as to what is going on right now nationally.

Re: Great news....

Okay. Nationally, Comcast has a 250GB soft cap.

They also have DOCSIS 3 tiers in my area now. Qwest (uncapped, DSL) can only do 5 Mbps (4.2 down, 735k up after overhead) at my location, and I'm very much "in town". Guess which provider I'm using?

I would hope you would be using the one that worked the best for you. Providers are different from one area to the next. If both worked great, were competitively priced so price wasn't an issue, and the only issue was service speed and the cap, that would be totally up to you.

You want speed? Comcast is your ISP.

You want uncapped service and willing to sacrifice a little speed? Qwest is your ISP.

No wrong answer here. Just all depends on what you want to use it for.

Re: Great news....

Fair enough, though if Qwest had VDSL in my area I'd likely be using their service (probably starting with 20/5 and then downgrading to 12/5 after the promo period ended).

All that said, some people rail against caps without any idea as to how much data they consume. Unlimited is all well and good but if you're only ending up using 30GB per month then there's no real reason to care.

I'm probably going to go over 250GB this month (backups) however at that point I'll know whether Comcast considers my area to be congested. If I don't get a warning, I keep my internet service and can feel free to use online backup etc. If I do get a warning, I tone down my usage and/or switch to a business plan. Pretty simple actually, and it's one of the nice things about a soft cap with a warning before you're booted.

I would be cautious about going over the cap. I know a few people who went over the cap and just got billed more when their bill came due. Just keep an eye on your bill.

I do agree with you. I have been tempted to drop my AT&T DSL and pick up Comcast just because of the faster speeds. I don't go over 250gb per month so I am ok with it too. The problem is that Comcast's HDTV lineup blows.

Re: Great news....

Comcast specifically doesn't charge overages on any of their services. If they did so I'd either pay up (if it was a few bucks) or sue the crap outta them.

On the Comcast vs. AT&T side, do what you feel like. I don't have (and have never had) pay-TV so I'm blissfully ignorant of what I'm missing. Or close to it anywa; I watch expanded basic at my grandma's house (Comcast FL).

AT&T could do a lot better than the current U-Verse offer. I don't understand why AT&T isn't working on fiber to the home. Within this last week, I left my last AT&T landline. AT&T needs to work on being more competitive. This isn't 1990 anymore.

Re: Great news....

One word: investors. They're scared crapless about spending any money providing infrastructure for the company's products. Verizon took the leap in high-ROI markets and now they're reaping the benefits.

AT&T has some FTTH areas, though the only difference between them and normal U-Verse is that you won't interfere with the bandwidth stream if you're watching TV, to my knowledge.

AT&T, also to my knowledge, isn't laying down copper in new developments. However when you have large sunk costs the temptation is to try to milk as much out of that infrastructure as possible. Hence a service that doesn't offer more than 1.5 Mbps on the upload side :/

You know, if AT&T wasn't the only game in town, your argument might make sense. But when the only competition is Time Warner... there just isn't a choice here.

Seriously I see advertising like crazy, but yet I can't get it. The areas around me can, but I can't.
I can't wait to see AT&T's house of cards come crumbling down someday due their idiotic marketing plans "hey, lets advertise a service we don't offer yet!".

I'd like to bundle but....

This isn't a flexible bundle (even though AT&T's announcement claims its flexible)

Buy two, Get One Free 'for me' would be:

Wireless + VoIP, free Internet (or similar). I don't need/want the TV service.

Also 'High Speed Pro Internet = 3Mbps/1Mbps)

This would be a more 'honest' deal, IMO:

Wireless + U200-U450 (regardless of add ons) = Free 10/1Mbps internet while in contract with AT&T Mobility.

U-Verse is now available to my area - Mobile, AL

U-Verse has been launched in the Mobile, AL area. I got this from the AT&T store locally and via their number lookup tool. My AT&T home phone number now also qualifies. Hopefully they will extensd this offer to the AT&T Southeast region.

The trick for me is to now figure out a way to justify a $480!!! DirecTV HD contract buyout to switch. If I order today or tomorrow (through August 25th), they will give $250 cash back. It looks like I may save money just from the prices they have. BTW, I have one more year in contract with DirecTV. If you so much as add another receiver, they add to your contract

I tend to agree. I'd like to see a contract deal, not just six months. I couldn't find any details on the u-verse website and their "live chat" person didn't add to my knowledge.

So basically...

This deal only exists in former Ameritech territories.

And 6months broadband with TV+Phone? what kind of deal is that? How about free TV with TV+Web?

Surprises you? Typically that how it always worked when it was SBC on the door. Only exception was the trial market in TX for u-verse, simply bc Verizon was testing FIOS there. And in traditional ex-Ameritech fashion, they half-ass a roll-out.

I think VZ Fios is doing something similar..

6 months 2 for 3 deal & 3 months free multiroom DVR I think.. sorry I missed that deal. I read somewhere that telco multi-package providers are trying to boost their customer base. Unlike cable, I think they are kind of new in these triplay offerings. They must feel people will like the service if they try it & if they feel in any way as I did with my FIOS service, they will.

If you're lucky enough to have it in your area, the nsure, it may be a good deal.

But what about those of who have been sitting back and watching AT&T cherry-pick what neighborhoods they'll even serve?
AT&T, you went to the state and got what you wanted out of them, promising coverage for all in your service area. Either fulfill your promise made to the regulators, or leave the state and let someone in who just might want our money for Fiber to the home/node TV and internet services.

Re: Yawn

Actually, I'm a little surprised it took any provider this long to phrase their triple play package deal this way; for Comcast, take 'X' cable plan and add the cost of 'Y' HSI speed tier (at regular rates), you'll be within $10 of the price of the XY triple play, and sometimes a good bit more.

I'd be very surprised if the numbers weren't meant to work this way.
